Biltmore Village

No visit to Asheville is complete without dropping by the Biltmore village, a premiere destination for fine art and antiques. Whether you're looking for 18th century French furniture, Swarovski crystal, original artworks or simply fascinating architecture, you're sure to find it in the Biltmore Village's 30 shops, galleries, and restaurants. In addition to fabulous shopping, The Biltmore Village is also rife with history. When George Washington Vanderbilt, heir to the Vanderbilt family fortune, ordered the construction the famous 125,000 acre Biltmore Estate, he found that his plan required an alarmingly high number of workers. So it was that the Biltmore village was built as a state of the art company town to house them. Architect Richard Morris Hunt, designer of the grand Biltmore House itself, echoed the themes he had used on the estate when designing the Biltmore Village. Hunts work has stood the test of time; the village has performed several roles in the following century, only to grow into one of the most interesting shopping districts in the region.

The Grove Arcade

With over 40 fresh food markets, galleries, restaurants, specialty stores and more, everything you could hope for can be found at the Grove Arcade, right in downtown Asheville! The Grove arcade was the vision of the same man who realized Asheville's famous Grove Park Inn, E.W.Grove. Although he never lived to see completed, he said of his dream, the Grove Arcade, "It is generally conceded that the Arcade Building would do justice to a city many times the size of Asheville. It is by far the finest structure in the South and there are few, if any, finer in the entire country." While many argue that this still holds true today, that the Grove Arcade is a must see destination remains undisputed.
