Could you be the voice for an abused/neglected child in the court system? Volunteers needed in Buncombe County North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Program 828-259-3443 or www.volunteerforgal.org for more info No experienced needed – all training and support provided Since January 1, 2017, 360 children have entered the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) program – this means that 343 kids are alleged to have been abused/neglected and are in the court system. Of no fault of their own, these kids are typically removed from their home and placed and in foster care or a kinship placement. Why were they removed from the home? Maybe their parents abused substances, had untreated mental health, or engaged in domestic violence – maybe it was a combination of these factors. Either way, it’s the kids who pay the ultimate penalty as their lives are uprooted, they often change school districts and are taken away from everything they know. There are so many parties in a DSS abuse/neglect case: the judge, parents/caretakers, parent’s attorneys, DSS attorneys, GAL attorneys, investigative/in-home/foster care social workers…it’s easy to see how the kids get lost in the system. That’s where the role of the Guardian ad Litem comes in: to advocate and ensure the voice of the child is heard in court, that their wishes for permanency and best interest are made known to all parties. With so many kids in the GAL program, our office is overwhelmed with cases, and we have a critical need for volunteers to represent children’s best interests in court. There is no experience necessary and we provide all training and support. Being a GAL is a challenging and demanding role, but also incredibly rewarding as you literally ensure the child’s voice is heard in court throughout the life of the case. Our next training begins mid-January – visit www.volunteerforgal.org to complete a volunteer application, or call the office at 828-259-3443 for more information. Could you be the voice for a child?

Description:
Asheville Gallery of Art’s February show features the work of two new members, Ana Blanton and Zoe Schumaker. Though they paint in two different styles and mediums, the artists’ work represents the inspiration each derives from nature. The show runs February 1-28 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in Asheville, across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artists on Friday, February 2, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by. “When I process ideas, I see them as layers of images rather than words, and as my thoughts become imagery, I feel more comfortable expressing myself through abstract form,” says Ana Blanton. Of her latest series of mixed-media paintings she says, “In this series I am more interested in representing the sense and feel of light in nature. It is about exploring the sense of energy and movement that is unique to light traveling through air, water, and objects in nature or a simple still life.” Blanton, who has lived in Asheville since 1997, has a BA in Art Studio from Mars Hill University. She studied Art Conservation at University of Madrid, Spain, and mural painting and mural Conservation at the International School of Mural Painting Miguel Farre, Barcelona, Spain. Zoe Schumaker says, “From an early age, I tried to capture the beauty I saw by drawing and photographing my surroundings.” Raised in the Santa Cruz Mountains of Northern California, the artist spent many afternoons immersed in imaginative drawings of the mountains, lakes and forests, and the animals that live there. Schumaker rediscovered her passion for painting upon moving to the Blue Ridge Mountains in 2005. “As I explored the area, I started bringing my backpack kit of pastels. It was not long before I decided to pursue art full time.” The artist teaches painting at the John C. Campbell Folk School and is active in several regional environmental non-profits. She frequently donates her work to support these causes. “Nature is my muse. I hope my paintings capture the joy and reverence I feel for our beautiful home.” The featured works by Blanton and Schumaker, as well as the paintings of the other 29 gallery members will be on display and for sale through the month of February. For further information about this show, you can contact Asheville Gallery of Art at (828) 251-5796, visit the gallery website at www.ashevillegallery-of-art.com, or go to the gallery Facebook page.

Brandy Clements of Silver River Center for Chair Caning in the River Arts District will be at Grovewood Gallery February 16-18 demonstrating authentic cattail rush weaving on a chair seat designed by Brian Brace Fine Furniture. This style of weaving dates back thousands of years to ancient Egypt and can be found on classic Gustav Stickley chair seats. Brandy is a 4th generation chair caner and a self-proclaimed "chair nerd" on a mission to dispel the myth that chair seat weaving is a lost art. She and her husband/business partner Dave Klingler have been weaving new lives into chairs for over 12 years, and have taught over 100 sessions at their school, offering classes on laced and pressed caning as well as splint, rush, and Shaker tape weaving. This year marks Silver River's 4th anniversary as the nation's only fully dedicated chair caning school and museum. The school is also an official education center of the Southern Highland Craft Guild.

Description:
The Family Constellation Workshop is a beautiful way to bring the real issues in your family system to light. Systemic Constellation is an effective method for working with trans-generational issues and repeating patterns that show up in the family by increasing the flows of Love in your family system, easing the blockages to the flows of Love. A Family Constellation Workshop is a beautiful and gentle way to bring the real issues in your family system to light and to encourage them to transform. Systemic Family Constellations began in Germany in the early 1980s, and are the life work of Bert Hellinger, psychotherapist. Systemic Family Constellation is a popular, known therapy worldwide and is now gaining traction in the US. What is Family Constellation and how does it work? During a Systemic Family Constellation workshop, we gather as a sacred circle of individuals in service to our families and to each others' families. If you have an issue you want to look at in your family system, I will ask you some basic questions about your family system: Who was excluded? Did anyone die at a young age? Was anyone forgotten? When I have a sense of where the issue might be centered, I ask you to chose people from the group to represent your family members, issues, events, or even places which might have a bearing on the issue. I will ask you to place each representative in the working space in the manner in which it feels 'right' to you. When a representative is placed, they are connected to the Knowing Field of your family system. They begin to relate to one another in very specific visual and spatial ways. From these relationships, we can see what cannot normally be seen about the inner workings of the system, and we can see where blockages occur. By nudging the system and by encouraging representatives to use Healing Statements of simple truth about what is, we strengthen the system and increase the flows of love within it. Systemic Constellation is one of the only methods for examining and modifying trans-generational patterns within the family system. To have a successful constellation you don't need to bring any other members of your family with you! Description:
The Cabernet Sauvignons from the past few vintages in California have been epic! The 2012’s were sexy and opulent, the 13’s were classic, structured, and long-lived, the 14’s were charming and elegant, and the 15’s are exuberant and powerful. Oh yeah, the 16’s I tasted on my recent trip to Napa were beautiful — it’s going to be another phenomenal vintage for Napa Cab. Enough talking, let’s do some tasting. Stop by the store any time between 2-5pm this Saturday to sample some lovely Cabs from some ideal vintages. No RSVP required — just stop by — we’ve got plenty of free parking. All of the featured tasting wines are being offered at 20% off by the bottle! To take advantage of the savings, all sales must be tendered by the end of the tasting. 1. 2015 Ancient Peaks Cabernet Sauvignon (Paso Robles, California) – The quality of Paso Robles’ Cabs has steadily increased over the past 10-15 years, often rivaling those produced in Napa and Sonoma. Here’s a fine example of why we’re seeing that trend. “Deep-pitched blackberry and cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of woodsmoke, vanilla and dark chocolate. Hefty and broad in the mouth, offering jammy dark fruit flavors and a strong hint of mocha.” – Vinous Media – 88 points Special Tasting Price: $15.99/bottle 2. 2012 Big Vine Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley, California) – It’s back and we bought it all! A past customer and staff favorite, the Big Vine Cabernet Sauvignon re-appeared at the beginning of the year. From the brilliant 2012 vintage, this stuff is showing lovely maturity, but it’s by no means over the hill. Elegant, beautifully detailed, and laced with notes of red and dark fruit, cedar, spice box, and dark chocolate, it’s a ton of wine for the $$! Special Tasting Price: $23.99/bottle 3. 2015 Tamber Bey Cabernet Sauvignon “Deux Chevaux Vineyard” (Napa Valley, California) – I was looking for something like the Venge Cabernet Sauvignon, and I found it on my trip! This relatively young producer’s single-vineyard Cab literally took my breath away when I tasted it. From benchland vineyards in Yountville, this is rich, creamy, opulent, and hedonistic Cabernet. Perfect with steak, but it doesn’t require food. Wait until you try it!! Special Tasting Price: $39.99/bottle

Description:
Amanda Kabak, winner of the Arcturus & Chicago Review of Books Al-Simak Award for fiction, will visit Asheville on February 17 to read from her innovative LGBTQIA+ debut novel, The Mathematics of Change. The Mathematics of Change is an emotional page-turner featuring three women-identified characters at midlife whose lives are at critical crossroads—their pasts and their futures intersecting in ways that create both drama and opportunity. Kabak’s characters hold deep-seated ideas of who they are, but they are forced to question these ideas in different and very difficult ways. “Change is inevitable,” says Kabak, “but that doesn’t make it easy, especially on an emotional level. When that change sparks self-reflection and doubt, it is even worse.” As an own-voices novel, Mathematics has strong appeals to feminist and LGBTQIA+ readers. It offers important reflections on female friendship, looking at the intimate connections women make with each other in order to survive and learn about themselves and what they want. It investigates the fluidity of sexuality for women-identified people, as well as the intersections of gender identity, emotional intimacy, and sexuality. Central protagonist Mitch is a woman not often represented in fiction—woman-identifying, masculine-presenting, with an unexpectedly fluid sexuality, whose intellect is continuously confronted by deeply emotional connection. This is a book that shows women as they are: human, flawed, fierce, and the genuine movers in their own lives and their communities. Chicago native Amanda Kabak is a Pushcart Prize nominee and the 2017 winner of the Chicago Review of Books Al-Simak Award for Fiction. She has had stories published in Midwestern Gothic, The Quotable, Perceptions Magazine, and other print and online periodicals. Firestorm Books and Coffee (610 Hayward Road) will host Kabak’s reading on February 17 at 3:00 p.m. The author will answer questions from the audience and sign copies of her novel following the reading. Local novelist Sarah Blackman (Hex; Mother Box and Other Tales) will introduce Kabak and moderate the question-and-answer period.

NIGHT MUSIC BY ASHEVILLE PLAYWRIGHT, DAVID BRENDAN HOPES OPENS THE MAGNETIC THEATRE’S 2018 SEASON Hopes is an accomplished and prolific writer with numerous awards and accolades for his poetry, prose, and plays. Night Music won the 2017 North Carolina New Play Award and had its world premiere at the Drama Center in Greensboro, North Carolina last year. This will be the third play by Hopes to be presented at the Magnetic Theatre; Washington Place and Uranium235 both had their world-premiere at The Magnetic Theatre in 2015 and 2017 respectively. Night Music is a coming-of-age story about a pair of boyhood friends -- the intense, intellectual Cleve, and easy-going, athletic Jesse. As the pair take a camping trip in the mountains, young Philomela watches the play of their flashlights high on a hill in the forest, and imagines she is seeing the love of her life. She is; but is it Jesse or Cleve? “Though it is almost undetectable now, I wrote Night Music in response to the massacre at Virginia Tech a number of years ago. As a college professor, I have been involved in student lives for a number of years, and that dark event made me wonder about the lives these young people led before their intersection with history” commented Hopes about the inspiration behind Night Music. “Those who know the event fairly well will hear the echoes. But the second thing it was about--and the thing it is still about--is how we find our role in life according to those who journey with us. How would you be different if you hadn't met that special friend at camp? How would you be different if your first love had been someone else? If you had learned one song rather than another? There's no way of knowing; theater allows us to speculate.“ The cast of Night Music features Quinn Morris and Nick Biggs as Cleve and Jesse, respectively. Serena Dotson-Smith appears as Philomena. The production is being directed by Christine Eide with a scenic design by Julia Cunningham, lighting design by Jason Williams, and sound design by Mary Zogzas. Marissa Wilson is the production stage manager. Night Music will be presented at The Magnetic Theatre Company, 375 Depot Street in the River Arts District; Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30 PM, February 1-February 17. Ticket prices range from $12 (for the February 1 and 2 preview performances) to $16 for all other performances.

With an ability to access both the smartest and the stupidest parts of your brain, there’s a reason this comedy phenom has been headlining comedy clubs nationwide for over 20 years. He began his professional full-time comedy career in July of 1996 performing in clubs throughout the states and by 1999 he was headlining. Mo Alexander is one of the most complete comics working in clubs and private events around today. Mo’s comedy history includes his own Las Vegas show, “The Mo Funny Show” at the Casino Royale (2003). After impressing Keenan Ivory Wayans with a good natured roast, he was asked to be the opening act on tour (1999) with Keenan. Since 1995, his comedic skills have given way to bigger opportunities on television, such as appearances on ABC’s Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, and has even made an appearance in Poison’s Bret Michael’s film, Letters from Death Row. In the past few years, Mo has been on several syndicated radio shows in major markets, such as Bob & Tom (Indianapolis), and Mancow (Chicago), and made his way through the ranks to become a semi-finalist in both the San Francisco Comedy Competition (2012) and the Seattle Comedy Comedy Competition (2013) and a headliner at a number of other festivals such as, Asheville Comedy Fest (2015), Altercation Festival (2016), Hopkins Comedy Festival (2017), and Memphis Comedy Festival (2017). Earlier this summer (2017), Mo taped his first national stand-up appearance for Comedy Central, appearing in the Kevin Hart Presents series “Hart of the City: Memphis Edition.” Mo has released four CD’s: Evolution (2006), Nappy Headed Hoes and Other FCC Infractions (2008), Just in case the Mayans are Right…. (2012, which was featured on the iTunes new and notable charts front page for 5 months), and Got Clots (2016) as could only be told from inside the comedic mind of Mo Alexander. This hilarious look at life from the perspective of 77 days of hospitalization was released exactly one year, on April 5th, from the time of his first death and resurrection which occurred on April 5, 2015 (Easter Sunday). To say that Mo is funny is like saying that Michelangelo was a good painter. Taking all of life’s absurdities and creating a night of hysterical laughter is why Mo Alexander is one of this industries greats. Mo takes a lifetime of experience and insight and transforms them into some of the most ingenious laugh riots you will ever experience in your life. Not for the faint of heart, or mind, intelligent and hard-hitting are two terms that best describe what everyone that has ever been to a Mo Alexander Show will experience. Nothing compares to the energy of a room when Mo is through with it. Watching Mo Alexander is a night of hilarity and mischief that one won’t soon forget. Though, he usually tries to leave you with the underlying message,”I’m trying to save the world, one comedy show at a time.” You realize that not only are you entertained, you’re changed. You have a mission: “to slap the stupid!” Mo Alexander can be found online at Facebook.com/comedianmoalexander twitter.com/moalexander youtube.com/moalexander Hosted by Petey Smith McDowell Featuring Charley McMullen Tickets $7 advance, $10 door https://www.eventbrite.com/e/peteys-playhouse-presents-mo-alexander-tickets-41018902642

Description:
This April marks the 50th anniversary of the tragic assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., so for Lent this season, Trinity is joining with St. Matthias to let King’s prophetic voice ring again. On each Sunday, we will explore on of King’s sermons, delivered in worship and in churches, to allow his voice and spirit to speak directly to us again. Some scholars consider the Civil Rights Movement as much a religious revival movement as a political movement. And King’s sermons demonstrate this dynamic profoundly, revealing King as a faithful pastor, an engaging theologian, and a stirring prophet all at once. We will hear his voice in its context and then explore how his voice continues to speak to us today and our current context today, to challenge, to inspire, and to provoke us to be more faithful Christians. Held jointly in honor of Dr. King’s vision of beloved community, this series will be led by and hosted at St. Matthias for the first two weeks Feb. 18-25, concluding for the final weeks at Trinity March 4-March 25, from 9:30-10:15 a.m. St. Matthias is located a few short blocks from Trinity at 1 Dundee St. The series will run from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. to give all attendees time to make it to worship at their respective parishes. Feb. 18th at St. Matthias: Bill Mance, diocesan chair of the Commission to Dismantle Racism, on “Paul’s Letter to American Christians,” a sermon delivered at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, Montgomery, Alabama, on Nov. 4, 1956. Chairman of commission to dismantle racism Feb. 25th at St. Matthias: Jean Parks, previous senior warden of St. Matthias and counselor with the Partnership for Pastoral Counseling, on “Loving Your Enemies,” a sermon delivered to Dexter Avenue Baptist Church on Nov. 17, 1957, March 4th at Trinity: Liz Colton, Trinity vestry member and board member of the Asheville Martin Luther King, Jr. Association, on “The American Dream” and “Unfulfilled Dreams,” sermons delivered at Ebenezer Baptist church in 1965 and 1968. March 11th at Trinity: The Rev. Margaret Faeth on “The Drum-Major Instinct,” delivered at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Feb. 4, 1968. March 18th at Trinity: The Rev. Dennis Fotinos, facilitator of Trinity’s Becoming Beloved Community group, on “A Knock at Midnight,” delivered at Mt. Zion Baptist (Cincinnati) on June 11, 1967 March 25th at Trinity: The Rev. Dr. Scott White, with the Rev. Kirk Brown chaplain at Christ School, on “Reimagining Awake Through a Great Revolution,” delivered at Washington National Cathedral on March 31, 1968. Just a few days before his assassination, this marked King’s final Sunday sermon of his life. The Rev. Brown was in attendance that day.
