More about Market Place: We are a group of cooks, farmers, waiters, cheese-makers, organizers, ranchers, brewers and dishwashers who share a common philosophy about how we eat and in a larger sense, about life. Chef William Dissen Chef William Dissen We believe in the importance of working locally, not just using ingredients from our surrounding area, but also in our contribution to the community. The success of our restaurant has always been closely entwined with the health and progress of our community. For 35 years we have supported the arts, local-needs and education programs. Our clients have returned over the decades, we hope in part because we have always tried to treat them as family… and friends. Some might say, our food tastes good, perhaps even memorable. Each day, we do our utmost to prepare and present fresh food in a creative manner with a craftsman’s hand. Working in the most sustainable way possible is important. The Market Place has been a fixture in downtown Asheville since 1979. Though it’s beginnings rose in the streams and mountains of western North Carolina – a place of mountain trout and small farms – it also has a hand and heart inspired by traditions far from our borders. This mélange of local food prepared with other worldly traditions of the table may have helped the Market Place garner national attention but the keen reverence for the heritage and roots of Appalachia has always remained at the center of what we do. Get your weekend off to a good start with our Free Red Zinfandel Tasting. You’re invited to Asheville’s best free wine tasting. Just stop by – we’ve got plenty of free parking. First and foremost, please note that this is a RED Zinfandel Tasting — there will be no sweet, pink wines poured. Red Zinfandel, or Red Zin as if often goes by, is one of the all-time great spring and summer grilling wines. With its core of bold and ripe berry fruit, peppery spice, and zesty acidity, the grape was born to be served with steaks, chops, and barbecue. Join us to sample a trio of Red Zinfandels — from simple and easy-going to regal and grand, we’re covering all bases here folks. Taste, learn, save every Friday at Table Wine. All of the featured tasting wines are 20% off by the bottle on tasting day only! Can’t make it, but want to take advantage of the savings? Call us at 828.505.8588, and we can run your card over the phone. 1. 2014 Mannara Primitivo (Puglia, Italy) – Primitivo is the Italian name for Zinfandel, and this is a great introduction. A top candidate for your new “house red,” this one delivers tons of charm and pleasure at more-than-fair price. Bursting with notes of ripe cherry and raspberry, it’s not the most complex thing in the world. But at less than $8/bottle, what more could you ask for? 2. 2015 Pedroncelli Zinfandel “Bushnell Vineyard” (Dry Creek Valley, California) – Pedroncelli is one of Sonoma County’s oldest producers, and their Bushnell Vineyard yields some heady and hearty Zinfandel. Planted back in the 1940’s, these old vines deliver the quintessential, Dry Creek Zinfandel experience. “Briary and full of verve, with wild berry, mocha and orange zest aromas that lead to lively black cherry and licorice flavors. Drink now through 2023.” – Wine Spectator – 91 points 3. 2014 Limerick Lane Zinfandel (Russian River Valley, California) – This stuff is NEXT LEVEL GOOD! Since purchasing Limerick Lane in 2011, Jake Bilbro has established it as one of the top Zinfandel producers in Sonoma. Their 2014 is in fine form — here’s what Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media had to say: “The 2014 Zinfandel (Russian River Valley) is flat out delicious. Supple, silky and enveloping, the 2014 captures the full personality of this site. Succulent red cherry, plum, menthol, licorice and sweet pipe tobacco are front and center.” Vinous Media – 93 points

Our next Super Saturday Wine Tasting will feature a bevy of Sensational Spring Wines. The cool cats from Sour Grapes join us to pour you the wines and tell you the stories. Just $5 to try 9 fantastic whites and dry roses. Free for Grape Nuts! Yep, you read that right. We’re doing all whites and dry roses at our next Super Saturday Wine Tasting. And every single one of the wines comes from a small, family-run estate. With spring in full bloom and summer just around the corner, this is your chance to taste, learn, save, and stock up on some of the best warm-weather wines we can find. Trust me folks, this will be one of the best wine tastings to go down in Asheville all spring and summer. Don’t miss it! All of the featured tasting wines are 20% off by the bottle on tasting day. 1. 2017 Chateau de la Selve Maguelonne Rose (Coteaux de l’Ardeche, France) – Talk about a wine to get the juices flowing! Chateau de la Selve is a small, certified organic/biodynamic estate, and their dry rose is fabulous. A blend of Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah, it’s spring in a glass. 2. 2017 Domaine des Diables “Le Petit Diable” (Provence, France) – This heavenly, Provencal rose is in fine form again this year. 60% Syrah, with the balance in Cinsault and Grenache, it’s fresh, dry, and super aromatic. Look for notes of red fruits, summer peach, and green herbs. 3. 2016 Domaine de Bel Air Pouilly Fume (Loire Valley, France) – Pouilly Fumes are getting harder and harder to find………and pricier! After much hunting and tasting, I found the perfect one. 100% Sauvignon Blanc, this one snaps, crackles, and pops with crisp, steely citrus and chalky, flinty minerality. YUM! 4. 2017 Domaine du Pas St. Martin Saumur Blanc “La Pierre Frite” (Loire Valley, France) – This 100% Chenin Blanc-based wine comes from old, certified organic vineyards in France’s Loire Valley. Bone-dry, yet beautifully rich and textured, the zesty acidity keeps you coming back for sip after sip. 5. 2016 Chateau de la Selve Viognier “Saint Regis” (Coteaux de l’Ardeche, France) – De la Selve’s Viognier is beautiful and balanced in this vintage. Lighter and fresher than most Viogniers, it still possesses those lovely aromatics. Honeysuckle, rose petal, spice, and peach jump out of the glass here. 6. 2016 Pullus Halozan (Stajerska, Slovenia) – You might remember this one as “the most dangerous white wine on the planet” from last summer. It still holds that title! Why? Because it’s a liter of white wine deliciousness. A blend of 8 different aromatic whites, it’s fresh, it smells like heaven, and it tastes even better. Just drink it! 7. 2017 Pullus Pinot Grigio Rose (Stajerska, Slovenia) – Like their Halozan, Pullus’s Pinot Grigio is dangerously drinkable. For this one, they leave the juice and skin together for a bit, and the resulting wine is slightly pink and a lot more intense than your average Pinot Grigio. Bold notes of melon, creamy peach, herbs, and more! 8. Domaine des Diables “BonBon” Rose (Provence, France) – This, my friends, is one of the most intense, aromatic, and delicious roses in the house. From extremely old vines planted in 1914, this blend of Cinsault, Syrah, and Grenache screams out of the glass with notes of raspberry, pink grapefruit, citrus zest, and more. 9. La Collina Lunaris Secco (Emilia-Romagna, Italy) – We’ll end with something fun and super refreshing. It’s 100% Malvasia and it’s somewhere in between an orange wine, a Pet Nat, and a Loire Valley Chenin Blanc with amazing cider-like notes and a purity and cleanliness that cannot be topped.

Tasting beer blind Is a totally different ball game. In this class, you’ll have the opportunity to taste a variety of Archetype beers, without knowing what they are or what they’re “supposed” to taste like. Brett, mixed-culture, barrel-aged, and everything in between. You’ll learn to pick up on flavors and aromas without tasting descriptions, and describe them with industry lingo that you’ll recognize and understand. After tasting, our brewers, Steven Anan and Erin Jordan, will give a rundown of each beer with our house tasting notes plus a little extra instruction on how we perceive each beer. Bring all your burning questions, they’ll do their best to answer! You’ll leave with a better understanding of how the pros taste beer and of how your own palette tastes beer (plus a few helpful guides to take home with you). The class is $15 and will last roughly an hour and a half

Get your weekend off to a good start with our Top Flight Chardonnay Tasting. And all you have to do is stop by — we’ve got plenty of free parking. Chardonnay might be the most misunderstood grape/wine out there. Why you ask? Because it’s responsible for some of the greatest white wines on the planet, but it’s also responsible for some of the worst. Stylistically, it can range from super crisp and minerally to super rich and oaky. Much like any other foodstuff, it’s impossible to pigeonhole this one. And we’re going to prove that at this tasting. Stop by, taste the different styles of Chardonnay, and leave with a newfound knowledge and respect for the grape. Oh yeah, leave with a few bottles too. Taste, learn, and save every Friday at Table Wine. All of the featured tasting wines are 20% off by the bottle on tasting day only. Can’t make it by, but want to take advantage of the savings? Call us at 828.505.8588 and we can run your card over the phone. 1. 2016 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis “Sainte Claire” (Burgundy, France) – We’ll start with Chablis, and this one is fermented entirely in stainless steel. Additionally, the malolactic is blocked. The result is a super clean, crisp, and zesty Chardonnay. “Pure and bracing, this white offers lemon, green apple and honey flavors. Balanced, winding down languidly on the earth-tinged finish.” – Wine Spectator – 90 points 2. 2015 Mount Eden Chardonnay “Old Vines” (Edna Valley, California) – Previously labelled as “Wolff Vineyard,” this epic Chardonnay from one of California’s blue chip estates comes from a vineyard planted back in 1976. These old vines yield intense grapes, and this one is fermented in barrel with full malolactic. The result is a rich, yet balanced Chardonnay with good fruit, judicious oak, and perfect balance. 3. 2014 Walter Hansel Chardonay “North Slope” (Russian River Valley, California) – This is a super special treat and there’s not much to be had. But I’m pouring it nonetheless! Stephen Hansel makes world-class wines. Often, his wines are some of the highest-rated of the vintage, but his prices are more than fair. This one is full, rich, and over the top good. “This wine exhibits plenty of honeyed brioche, with a greenish hue to its light-gold color, followed by notes of buttery hazelnuts, poached pear, pineapple and citrus oil. This is French in style as well, but with an almost lavish richness like a top-flight French Bâtard-Montrachet. It should drink well for 5-6 years.” – Wine Advocate – 93 points

Make your Saturday great with our World Class California Pinot Noir Tasting! We’re pouring some special Pinot Noirs, and all you have to do is stop by. We’ve got plenty of free parking. I have a weakness for buying too much Pinot Noir. Ask my staff — they’ll back that statement up. I just can’t help it. Why? Because when it’s good, it’s one of the best red wines on the planet. Of course, when it’s bad, it’s one of the worst red wines on the planet. Don’t worry, we won’t be pouring any bad ones for this tasting. Far from it,weI’ll be digging deep for this one, pouring some Pinot that aren’t even on the shelf yet. And we’ll be offering these up at the best prices in the country. Trust me, you’ll want to stop by for this one. Taste, learn, save big every Saturday at Table Wine. All of the featured tasting wines are 20% off by the bottle on tasting day only. Can’t make it by, but want to take advantage of the savings? Call us at 828.505.8588 and we can run your card over the phone. 1. 2015 Smith Story Pinot Noir “Helluva Vineyard” (Anderson Valley, California) – Husband and wife Alison Smith and Eric Story are crushing it! This 400 case production, single-vineyard Pinot Noir is pretty, refined, and elegant. Perfumed notes of pure cherry, strawberry, and cranberry meld with more complex notions of flowers and orange zest. The texture is impeccable and the purity is impressive. 2. 2013 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir “Peters Vineyard” (Sonoma Coast, California) – Anthill Farms was founded by three friends who cut their at Williams-Selyem. They obviously learned a thing or two, as their Pinot Noirs are highly sought after these days. Just over 200 cases of this one were made in the 2013 vintage — it’s a super special treat for sure. “Crushed flowers, mint, dried cherries and pine form an attractive tapestry of aromas, flavors and textures, especially through the mid-palate and finish, where the wine offers lovely density. All the elements fall into place effortlessly.” – Antonio Galloni – Vinous Media – 93 points 3. 2013 Capiaux Pinot Noir “Pisoni Vineyard” (Santa Lucia Highlands, California) – We end the tasting with an extra-special treat from Sean Capiaux. In addition to making the epic Cabernet Sauvignon’s for O’Shaughnessy, he makes serious Pinot Noirs under his own label. This one comes from the famed and prized Pisoni Vineyard, one of the state’s top sites for the grape. “This wine displays the classic and ethereal forest floor, blackcurrant and black cherry notes with some spring flowers thrown in for additional dimension. The wine is creamy, round, juicy, succulent, and medium to full-bodied.” – Robert Parker – Wine Advocate – 93 points

Isis Music Hall welcomes House of Hamill, featuring Brian Buchanan of Enter the Haggis and Rose Baldino of Burning Bridget Cleary. Their music has been described as "Radiohead meets Riverdance"; Celtic-inspired, exciting, eclectic and unpredictable. House of Hamill’s music occupies a space between sophisticated indie/pop and traditional Irish music. House of Hamill Band bio: Rose Baldino and Brian Buchanan met 10 years ago, late one night backstage at a theatre in rural Pennsylvania. Brian's band Enter the Haggis and Rose's group Burning Bridget Cleary were sharing a stage that evening, and the two bonded over a love of Irish fiddle tunes, Radiohead, and 4 AM whiskey. Their paths crossed a dozen times over the next decade on the road, but it wasn't until the Folk Alliance 2014 conference in Kansas City that they finally became musical collaborators. Burning Bridget Cleary's guitarist and drummer had their flights canceled at the last minute, and Rose (in desperation) asked Brian to grab a guitar and join her onstage. The two performed with virtually no rehearsal for over an hour, and their connection was powerful and immediate. A few months later Brian moved from Canada to Philadelphia, and as a tribute to the first tune Rose ever taught Brian, House of Hamill was born. Both Baldino and Buchanan are accomplished traditional fiddle players and classical violinists, with over 25 years of writing and performance experience between them. Together, they write unusual new fiddle tunes and exciting, unpredictable original songs while breathing new life into traditional and contemporary songs. Both are confident and unique lead vocalists, and the blend of their two voices in harmony is hypnotic and irresistible. Whether House of Hamill is playing songs from their debut album "Wide Awake" or stomping through a set of original jigs and reels, their chemistry onstage is always engaging and often hilarious. You'll leave with tired feet, a huge smile, and a new appreciation for the versatility of folk instruments in a modern context. House of Hamill is on the bleeding edge of a new generation of traditional musicians. “Their songs are always on the edge of traditional and innovation as they clearly enjoy what they play . . . their performances are electrifying”. - Sarah MacArthur, Highlander Radio

Description:
If you work for one of our wholesale partners and are ready to push your potential by advancing to Espresso: Tasting and Technique or Milk: Chemistry and Latte Art, this test is for you.  On this day, students will be tested on adjusting their grind and dose to pull a shot of espresso within the recommended parameters discussed in Barista Fundamentals. Students will have 15 minutes for this foundational dialing in. Once this portion has been passed, students will have another 15 minutes to build 3 lattes back to back. Drinks will be scored on consistency of temperature and texture.  Passing this test will result in immediate registration for one or both of the subsequent Counter Intelligence courses. This testing day can also be utilized by wholeale partners interested in fine-tuning their skills. This event is exclusively for wholesale partners of Counter Culture Coffee.
