A few months ago, the team and I built an ecommerce business in three days. Staying true to one of our core values of “Do Things, Tell People”, we documented the entire process. We figured, why not do it again? In fact, why not do it again with a totally different product, timeline, and budget? So, that’s what I did. For the past month or so, I have been building a business and documenting the entire process along the way. Everything from coming up with what to sell, to paid advertising, and more. Today, I’m happy to share the results of that with you. I hope you find some of the details I’ve included in this case study to be valuable to your business, or to inspire you to start one. Description:
In the United States and Canada government policies and popular media create a misleading narrative that places people of color at society’s margins. From cultural restrictions to harmful stereotypes the seemingly opposite experiences of the first and most recent people to live on this land share the same struggles. Framed within the Native American and immigrant experience, Crafted Strangers explores how craft can be used as a tool for regaining control over how one chooses to define themself. The seventeen artists featured in Crafted Strangers represent a diverse and unique perspective of racial and ethnic identities within the Americas. While craft has been a common means of expression historically across cultures, Crafted Strangers focuses on contemporary artists reinterpreting tradition. Through the materials selected, the tools used, and the method of display, traditions of beading, weaving, tufting, sewing, collage, braiding and drumming are reimagined. This treatment of the craft genre allows for a sophisticated dialogue that questions how strangeness or otherness are crafted and broken. What does it feel like to be a stranger in home, society, and country? Look beyond first impressions and see identity as an evolving collection of experiences rather than a fixed story. The curators would like to acknowledge that we are guests in the unceded territory of the Tsalagiyi Detsadanilvgi people of what is presently called Asheville, North Carolina. Exhibition will open Friday, September 15th, with a public reception from 5-8 pm. Exhibition open Tuesday-Saturday, 10-6 pm, following. Crafted Strangers is curated by the 2017 CCCD Curatorial Fellows Matters Unsettled (Cass Gardiner and Quizayra Gonzalez) and organized by CCCD. The 2017 CCCD Curatorial Fellowship was made possible by the John & Robyn Horn Foundation. Exhibition programming is supported by Donna and Ralph Briskin. CCCD is supported in part by a grant from the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. Benchspace programming is supported in part by Sara and Bill Morgan.

Asheville Gallery of Art’s September show features the work of Judy Rentner, whose brilliantly colored landscapes usher in the fall season. The show runs September 1-30 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in Asheville, across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artist on Friday, September 1, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by. The artist works in oils, using a palette knife to create intricate texture when applying her colors. Rentner says of her technique, “Painting with a palette knife has been delightful. It has allowed me to use color as I have never done before. The process is spontaneous, intuitive, and freeing. Using this means of applying paint fits so well into interpreting the landscape in a way that captures light and shadow, infusing it with more color than is actually there.” After receiving her art degree, Rentner taught in the California public school system. She has taken many workshops in various media to learn techniques, composition, and color theory. After moving to North Carolina, she taught classes in watercolor, acrylics, and oils. Of her life’s work Rentner says, “When someone asks how long did it take to paint a particular painting, I respond, ‘Oh, about 40 years, more or less.’ That usually gets a laugh or a puzzled look. In truth, it has taken many years of learning and many years of experimentation to settle into the style of painting that I currently use.” She added, “A person can look at a piece of art and appreciate what the artist has done, but evoking an emotional response is altogether different. This is what I desire when someone views my work, a positive, uplifting, emotional response.” Rentner’s work, as well as the paintings of the other 30 gallery members will be on display and for sale through the month of September. For further information about this show, you can contact Asheville Gallery of Art at (828) 251-5796, visit the gallery website at www.ashevillegallery-of-art.com, or go to the gallery Facebook page.

His ballads “Only One Way to Live,”“Stay Gone,”“Breathing Air”and “The Last Day” have never cut deeper, while his spirited “Beer”and “Better and Worse” are among the most upbeat songs he has ever crafted. “Time For That,”“Doing It Now For Love”and “Summertime Song” are catchy examples of how groove-soaked his music can be.

Description:
The Dark Crystal is considered a masterpiece film directed by the legendary puppeteers Jim Henson and Frank Oz and adored by both children and adults. Henson and Oz are responsible for bringing to life some of the greatest puppet characters from The Muppets to Sesame Street and even Yoda of Star Wars. The film is a dark story about Jen, an elf-like 'Gelfling', on a quest to restore balance to his alien world by returning a lost shard to a powerful but broken gem. The animatronics and special effects were ground-breaking at the time of its release. It is now extremely rare for this film to be seen on the big screen. Netflix has a sequel series coming out in 2018. Watch the teaser video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGzVYyV_Jsg September is 80's Movie Month at Asheville Pizza & Brewing Co. We're showing four unique 80's movie classics and creating a brand new beer for each movie. We let the public vote on the films and name the new beers via our social media sites. We'll do it again, so find us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to vote next time. THE NEW BEER WE CREATED FOR THIS FILM IS... Trial by Stone Fruit. It is a dark saison with black currants and cherries that will be released at our locations on September 21st. Watch this fantastic film in Asheville's original dine-in theater. There are tables in front of our big, cushy theater seats. Order dinner from our huge diverse menu (vegan options!), and enjoy this rare cinematic experience with 140+ other fans of this film. Also, enjoy a huge selection some of the best local beer in WNC! OUR SPECIAL SCREENINGS ALWAYS SELL OUT SO BUY TICKETS NOW! CONTENT GUIDE: Rated PG but be aware even though this film has positive messages and characters it takes place in a dangerous world with some scary-looking puppets. Parents suggest it is appropriate for children ages 8+. FAQs What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? There is plenty of parking in front of the building, on each side, and also in a big parking lot behind the building. All parking is free. Asheville Pizza & Brewing on Merrimon Avenue is very easy to find. Only five minutes from I-26, I-240 and Downtown. How can I contact the organizer with any questions? Email us at [email protected] if you have any questions. Please do not call our location as the staff who answers will likely not be able to know the answer.  Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? After you purchase your ticket we will have your name on a list. Please check in at the ticket counter AT LEAST 15 MINUTES before showtime. We strongly suggest you have a printed copy of your ticket or purchase confirmation OR you can show us the email purchase confirmation on your phone.  Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends? Yes, just make sure they check in with whatever name the tickets were purchased under.

Whose memory comes closest to the truth? Who bears the responsibility? See The Magnetic Theatre’s World Premiere of Lucia Del Vecchio’s BETTER STRANGERS! Best known for her rollicking Magnetic comedies such as MILF, The Musical and last year’s Off the Rails, playwright and Founding Artistic Associate Lucia Del Vecchio returns to Magnetic 375 (375 Depot Street in the River Arts District) with the world premiere of a thought-provoking drama, Better Strangers, about two people who meet again twenty years after a conversation that irrevocably changes one of their lives. Del Vecchio is extraordinarily excited about a script so different from those she’s written before. “This play allowed me to really delve into the nuances of dialogue,” the playwright says, “to follow what seems like a casual conversation between two people, who haven't seen each other in a long time, as it devolves into heated conflict and argument. Literally every word counts in a play like this, as it has the opportunity to shed light onto the motivations, subtext, and histories of each character.” Callan White, a highly regarded, Asheville-based actress and teacher, makes her Magnetic debut as the director of Better Strangers. The two-hander stars theatrical veteran Andrew Gall (a newly named Magnetic Theatre artistic associate, previously seen in The Magnetic’s Malverse, and the director of the company’s recent Six Knots) playing novelist/professor John Lambert, who—at least at first—has no recollection of former student Joanna Tilley, played by Emily Tynan, who makes her stage debut in this production. “This powerful play keeps becoming what you least expect,” says Magnetic Producing Artistic Director Steven Samuels. “And Lucia could not be more fortunate than to have Callan White directing a play with such complex, commanding characters. Andrew Gall’s performance will be strong, as always. Emily Tynan, the most-accomplished newcomer I’ve ever seen, will be a revelation.” The Magnetic Theatre presents the world premiere of Lucia Del Vecchio’s Six Knots, directed by Callan White. Starring Andrew Gall and Emily Tynan. Set and prop design by Nathan Singer. Lighting design by Jason Williams. At Magnetic 375 (375 Depot Street in the River Arts District). Low-priced previews September 14 & 15. Opening night, with free bubbly, September 16. Continues Thursdays-Saturdays through October 7. All performances at 7:30 PM. Previews $12. All other performances $16. $10 student rush tickets available 15 minutes before curtain with valid I.D. Prices include taxes and fees. Tickets and info: www.themagnetictheatre.org.

The Malpass Brothers sing "Hoping That You're Hoping" The Malpass Brothers at The Goldsboro Church Part 1 The Malpass Brothers - When I Stop Dreaming The Malpass Brothers - Hello Walls - Don't Worry About Me at the Wheeling Jamboree USA As young boys, Christopher and Taylor Malpass soaked up the music of their granddad’s phonograph records. Christopher earned his first talent show trophy at age 7, and Taylor was playing mandolin by the time he was 10. Today, they promote the work and music of classic country artists they treasure while creating new music and making their own mark in the lineage of a rich American cultural heritage.

With sincerity, honesty and an utter ease on stage that belies their years, their smooth vocal blend and skillful musicianship layer infectiously into the deep respect they pay to legends who have paved the way. Add the funny, off-the-cuff quips between the two 20-something siblings, and the engaging concert becomes a magnetic time-traveling journey to when a calmer rhythm reigned supreme.

The Malpass Brothers toured with the late Don Helms, former steel guitarist for Hank Williams, have opened for music legend Merle Haggard on multiple tours and appeared on stages from the Shetland Islands to Ryman Auditorium to Merlefest. Gifted musicians and songwriters, the brothers have shared billing with artists including Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Doyle Lawson, Rhonda Vincent, Marty Stuart, Doc Watson and more. The title cut video from their “Memory That Bad” album hit CMT Pure Country’s Top Ten. Their most recent self-titled recording, produced by bluegrass legend Doyle Lawson, was released by Crossroads’ Organic Records in 2015.

If you like cornbread & hush puppies, you’re gonna love the Malpass Brothers. If you like sweet tea, barbecue & collards, you’re gonna love the Malpass Brothers. If you like clean fresh air over a freshly-plowed field, if you like a great big ol’ corn puddin’ at a homecoming covered dish, you’re gonna love the Malpass Brothers. That’s a promise. (And you don’t lie about a covered dish supper.)

This is the real deal, folks. There is no pretense. This is music steeped in the legacy of the Louvin Brothers, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Hank Williams, Sr. & others. Count on classic, real country. Count on new Malpass tunes. Count on a couple of old-time traditional gospels. Count on their probably coming down into the house at intermission and asking what you’d like to hear. Count on giggles and ribbing between brothers, along with daddy on the bass, who’s bound to be thinking, “What the hell are they doing now?” Count on some big, high man hair, and maybe an Elvis twitch or two. Count on lines at the CD table … and count on logging on to see where they’ll be next.

"I never really questioned it, so I just forged ahead and didn't let anything stop me."Although his self-titled new Rounder album will serve as his introduction to many listeners, the personable young artist is actually a seasoned, distinctive songwriter and an experienced performer with a quartet of D.I.Y. indie releases to his credit. Having built a substantial grass-roots fan base through tireless touring and old-fashioned hard work, McConnell is primed for a mainstream breakthrough.Sean McConnell demonstrates exactly why McConnell has already won such a devoted audience. He writes vivid, forthright, effortlessly catchy songs whose incisive melodic craft is matched by their resonant emotional insight. Such instantly memorable tunes as "Holy Days," "Beautiful Rose," "Bottom of the Sea" and "Best We've Ever Been" are both catchy and personally charged, conveying an unmistakable sense of personal experience while exploring universal truths."This record's a bit of a step for me," McConnell asserts. "It's a real storyteller record, and it's pretty autobiographical. I'm learning how to be more honest and understated in my writing, and I wanted to match that sonically and vocally. When I look at this collection of songs, I see a lot of nostalgia, and looking back on sacred moments. I'm kind of nostalgic and reflective by nature."McConnell recorded the album in his adopted hometown of Nashville with producers Jason Lehning and Ian Fitchuk, who also contributed keyboards and drums, respectively. The recording took place prior to McConnell signing with Rounder, with the artist financing the sessions himself."This project started," he explains, "when I went to a cabin by myself for a week, with the intention of writing some songs. In that week, I wrote about half of the songs on the record, and I could see the thread of what this record was gonna be. That was exciting for me, because it normally takes me a year to find an album's worth of songs that belong together. The whole recording process was really fun and liberating, and the energy in the studio was really positive."Songwriting and music-making have been a part of Sean McConnell's life for as long as he can remember. "My mom was a singer and my dad was a guitar player and songwriter," he notes. "They'd play in coffeehouses and I'd go along and watch them perform, and seeing that lifestyle showed me that music was an option. And seeing my dad painstakingly writing songs had a huge influence on me, and gave me license to feel like I could enter into that world."By the age of ten, he had become proficient on guitar and was writing his first songs. "I fell in love with the instrument first," McConnell recalls. "Learning guitar gave me a feeling of uncharted territory laid out in front of me. And as I got better on guitar, the songs started to come naturally. At around the same time, we moved from Massachusetts to Georgia, and the first song I wrote was about the feeling of leaving the familiar and feeling lost in a new place. Music gave me a focus and became an emotional outlet for me."His supportive family background helped to instill the confidence and drive to pursue his muse early on. "I started playing in middle school, doing any gig I could get just to get my chops up," he says. "By high school, I would be doing local gigs and really promoting them, bringing out a couple hundred kids to my shows a few times a month and starting to make a decent living at it. That made me think that maybe I could do this in other towns. So I started traveling around the southeast a little bit, and there was always enough progress to take things to the next level. While I was in college, I did a lot of college touring, just me driving all over the United States in a Toyota Corolla. It was hard work, but it showed me that I could do it."McConnell was just 15 when he self-released his first album, Faces, in 2000. Followed by 2001's Here In The Lost and Found, 2004's 200 Orange Street, 2006's Cold Black Sky, 2007's Tell The Truth, 2008's The Walk Around EP, 2010's Saints, Thieves and Liars, 2012's Midland and the 2014 EP The B Side Session."I had a guitar teacher in Atlanta who had a home studio, and he was the first one to say 'Hey, you should make a record,'" he says. "If I go back and listen to that first record now, the songs are kind of crude, but at the same time there's a directness about them that I like. My writing has evolved since then, but at the same time I've tried to hold on to some of that directness.""I'm really attracted to songwriters who just put it out there honestly, and I feel like I'm getting back to basics and expressing things in a simple, direct way on the new album," he continues. "I'm just trying to learn how to be a more honest storyteller, trying to get my mind in a place where I'm not actually thinking and the music's just kind of happening naturally. When I read interviews with songwriters that I admire, they always say that the best songs are the ones that just kind of happen, like they're operating from the unconscious. That's a place I want to get to."Having spent much of his life honing his craft and paying his dues, Sean McConnell is eager to launch the next chapter of his career."I kind of feel like I've been in a really long boot camp," he concludes. "I'm really grateful for that, because I feel like I've gained enough experience to know the deal and be prepared for anything. I'm excited to see where the next part of the journey takes me."

18+ to Attend | $10 ADV / $15 DOSHeadliner: Craig Campbell CRAIG CAMPBELL Craig Campbell has never taken a backseat to anything. He’s certainly never taken a backseat in his career as one of Country’s brightest rising stars who launched onto the Country music scene in 2011 and continues to exist in a perfect sweet spot between tradition and modernity.  That doesn't mean the road to five consecutive charted hits and over a half million downloads has always been easy. There have been bumps along the way for the Georgia-born artist, on his path from the small town of Lyons to Nashville's Music Row. But through hits like "Keep Them Kisses Comin’," "Fish" and "Family Man," and countless shows, he's kept his eyes on his mission – to bring his fans true country music with a spin all his own, through timeless songs that tell his life story. And with his forthcoming debut project on RED BOW Records – flag-shipped by the earnest “Outskirts of Heaven,” which was co-written by Campbell – he is ready to share the next chapter: where that timelessness meets the here and now.  "There are a lot of sides to me that people haven’t yet seen," he says, currently at work on his third and most versatile record. "You can expect some great music with a little more energy, and a lot more fire."

Folk Rock Band, The Coteries, will be playing at One World Brewing Co. on Thursday, September 21st at 9 PM. The Colorado based band brings you high-energy music steeped in their travels on the back roads of the American countryside from their VW Bus, Trusty Rusty. In the summer of 2014 the trio quit their day jobs, bought a VW Bus, and took off on an 11,000 mile journey across North America. Aside for some freezing August nights in Wyoming it was the best decision of their lives. With their inaugural year and over 200 shows across 30 states behind they’re continuing their momentum into 2017. With a recent endorsement from GoWesty (Gregory Alan Isakov) as traveling ambassadors, they’ve gone from small farmer’s markets to major festivals opening from Sierra Hull and The Black Lillies and sharing the stage with artists Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Parsonsfield, and The Fray. For more information on The Coteries head to: www.TheCoteries.com or follow them on www.facebook.com/coteriesband.

Please arrive 5-10 minutes early. We will meet in the parking lot and enjoy a brief walking meditation through the beautiful botanical gardens before flowing through 75 minutes of traditional Hatha yoga in a secluded, flat grassy area surrounded by trees. These classes are held rain or shine as there is a covered cabin porch area where we can practice if it is raining or if the ground is too muddy.  Afterwards: You are free to head back to the parking lot and leave or stay and explore more of the gardens. A significant portion of every class goes directly to the Botanical Gardens at Asheville, a non-profit that relies completely on volunteers, donations and memberships.   Positive physiological and mental benefits of both yoga and reconnecting with nature have been reported including reduction of pain, stress and inflammation as well as better sleep. In the event of cancellation due to weather, you will be issued a refund.

Sculptor Dustin Farnsworth is a rising star in the contemporary craft world, and has exhibited work in over fifty national exhibitions, most recently in The Center for Craft, Creativity and Design’s jointly-curated exhibition, Forging Futures, at Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville, NC. His work, both smaller sculptures and large-scale installations, is inspired by architectural forms. Farnsworth aims to create “visceral and cerebral portraiture of today’s youth,” a generation he believes is in “need of protection, empowerment, and change.” Each year since 2006, CCCD awards ten graduating college seniors a Windgate Fellowship—one of the largest awards offered nationally to emerging artists. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of this program, CCCD launched the Windgate Project Grants initiative for previous fellows. For his Windgate Project Grant, Farnsworth worked as an artist-in-resident at the 701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia, South Carolina. The resulting installation incorporates audio and photographs taken during on-site interviews with local youth, while demonstrating how these contributions shaped his artistic process. Learn more about his work at the Windgate Project Grant Lecture, part of the North Carolina Art Council’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. The Windgate Fellowship Project Grant program is administered by The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design and supported by the Windgate Fund at the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. Fortune Feimster, the Southern comic who hails from North Carolina, is one of the busiest actors, standup comedians, and writers working today. Variety named her one of their ?Top 10 Comics to Watch? in 2014 and she?s been reaching new milestones ever since. Fortune, who first rose to fame as a performer and writer on ?Chelsea Lately,? can currently be seen as a series regular on ?The Mindy Project? where she plays the very loveable nurse Colette. It?s been a quick rise for Fortune who made her TV debut in 2010 on NBC?s ?Last Comic Standing? where she finished strong as a semi-finalist. She has since had recurring guest roles on ?Life In Pieces? and ?Mulaney,? and has appeared on ?Glee,? ?Two Broke Girls,? ?Workaholics,? ?Idiotsitter,? ?Drunk History,? and ?Married.? She?s also a regular guest on Chelsea Handler?s Netflix show, ?Chelsea.? As far as the big screen, Fortune has been in several award-winning indie movies, and she?s got very memorable parts coming up in the soon-to-be released movies ?Office Christmas Party,? ?Deported,? and ?F*cking People.? Not only has Fortune proven to be a strong performer, but she?s also had her hand in a number of projects behind the camera. After being cast in the Tina Fey pilot ?Cabot College? for Fox, Fortune went on to team up with Fey to create her own starring vehicle called ?Family Fortune,? which was given a pilot order at ABC. It would be the second TV pilot Fortune sold to the network. In her spare time, Fortune travels all over the world performing standup comedy. She?s had a half hour special on ?Comedy Central? and has performed on ?Late Night with Seth Meyers? and ?Conan.? She also makes guest appearances at the famed Groundlings Theater in Los Angeles where she used to be a member of their prestigious Sunday Company. If you haven?t had a chance to see Fortune in action, this is one talent you do not want to miss!

Their goal is to reproduce the classic, cosmic sound of the legendary band’s original studio recordings in a live setting. The focus of their repertoire is on the seven albums of the Moodies’ classic period, spanning from Days of Future Passed to Seventh Sojourn. They cover most of the well known hits as well as some of the more obscure gems from that era.The band features founding member, Garry Byrne, on keyboard sounds, which includes digital samples of Mike Pinder’s Mellotron, an instrument that was a major characteristic part of The Moody Blues’ sound. On lead vocals, backing vocals and electric bass is Sherman Hoover, who also performs with The Billy Jonas Band and has been playing at Jubilee services for many years.Todd Byington also sings lead vocals and backing vocals while strumming and picking the acoustic guitar. Doubling on acoustic guitar and backing vocals and rocking out on the lead guitar parts is Paul Quick of the local duo, QuickChester. James Wilson plays the drums on an electronic drum kit, which allows him to program sounds that match the original drummer’s palette. Kate Barber alternates between playing the flute and the tambourine and joins in on backing vocals.

Genre: FunkCover: $12.00 ADV // $15.00 DOSShow: 10PM (9PM Doors)Ages: 21+Big Sam's Funky NationNoladelic PowerFunk. That’s the sound BIG SAM’S FUNKY NATION have been whipping up for more than a decade. It’s high-energy music that mixes funk, rock & roll, hip-hop, and jazz into the same pot, gluing everything together with the brassy influence — and heavy grooves — of New Orleans. From national performances at Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits, to hometown appearances at Voodoo Fest and Jazz Fest, Big Sam’s Funky Nation have built their reputation onstage. The band’s live performances are legendary, filled with blasts of brass, bursts of electric guitar, and the charisma of Big Sam, a frontman who sings, plays, dances, and involves the audience in everything he does. You don’t just watch a Funky Nation show. You become part of the show, singing along with Big Sam whenever he demands a call-and-response.A native of New Orleans, Big Sam first rose to fame as a member of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, whose touring schedule kept the young trombonist on the road for 300 days a year. The group performed with bands from all genres, backing up Widespread Panic one minute before sharing the stage with Dave Matthews Band the next. A fan of diverse bands like Parliament Funkadelic, Jimi Hendrix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Living Colour, and Prince, Big Sam loved the variety that Dirty Dozen Brass Band offered. He wanted to front his own group, though. He needed to sing, to engage the crowd, to write his own songs. Inspired to chase down that dream, he formed Big Sam’s Funky Nation, reaching out to some of his favorite players from around the Big Easy — including Andrew “Da Phessa” Bayham, Jerry “Jblakk” Henderson, Alfred Jordan and Keenan McRae — to create his own super-group.“We don’t cater to one demographic,” says Big Sam, rattling off a list of jam band festivals, jazz shows, rock clubs, and funk gigs that his band has played since 2007. “We play music for everybody. It’s not just funk; that’s the foundation, but the music goes from funk to rock to wild jazz. It’s music about love and partying. Everyone can get down with that.”web: http://www.bigsamsfunkynation.com/vid: https://youtu.be/5Nuv9Vtrpgc
