Tracey Morgan Gallery is pleased to present What Goes on Here, a solo exhibition of works on paper by Asheville based artist, Kirsten Stolle. The exhibition features three series: Chemical Bouquet, By the Ton, and Faith, Hope, & $5,000. Stolle’s carefully composed collages and text-based works examine the influence of agribusiness and biotech companies on our food supply. Mining source materials such as 20th century medical books, agricultural equipment catalogs, and archival photographs, Stolle’s evocative work responds to corporate propaganda and challenges industry narratives. -------------- Tracey Morgan Gallery is pleased to present Fulcrum of Malice, an exhibition of photographs from Stacy Kranitz. The exhibition will be in the in the project gallery, and will hang alongside an exhibition of works from fellow gallery artist Kirsten Stolle. Stacy Kranitz’s work explores history, representation and otherness within the documentary tradition. She uses photography to open up a narrative that confronts our understanding of culture; one poised between notions of what is right and what is wrong. Kranitz is interested in carving out a path that explores the subjective relationship to the people she photographs resulting in images that are meant to implicate the photographer as well as the viewer. The exhibition runs through January 27th.

Curated by Akira Satake The thing that defines a tradition is the way it grows and develops over time.  No traditional art form, whether it be music, painting or ceramics, remains static and easily labeled for very long.  New influences are always coming into play, as upcoming generations learn to appreciate and revere the work of established artists but are inevitably inspired to interpret the art in new and sometimes brilliant ways. This year, we look towards a fresh generation of potters inspired by the rich traditions of our region’s ceramics.  We are very proud to feature these exceptional young artists in the exhibition, “Intro — Emerging Ceramicists in Western North Carolina,” and we look forward to seeing how their talents and vision shape the traditions of our ceramic heritage in the coming years.  Participating Artists Include: Matt Wegleitner, Tara Underwood, Micah Thanhauser, Dustin Fowler, Kristen Schoonover, The Bright Angle, Nina Kawar , Amanda Holloman – Cook, Anja Bartles, Candice Hensley, Molly Morning Glory, Samantha Oliver

Description:
Asheville Gallery of Art’s December show features the work of Elinor Bowman, whose watercolor interpretations of the human figure capture both spontaneity and grace of movement. The show runs December 1-31 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in Asheville, across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artist on Friday, December 1, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by. “My favorite subject is people, primarily painting live models. No matter how many times I’ve painted a model, some other aspect shows up. And new models are a completely new experience,” says the artist. The paintings in this show were all painted at an open studio at the Swannanoa Art League in Black Mountain, NC. “Watercolor, black walnut ink, and Chinese ink are currently my favorite mediums. I love the spontaneity, with results in the painting which may not have been expected or predicted.” Bowman shared how she works from life. “The paintings of clothed models were completed when the model maintained one pose (in twenty minute increments) for three hours, although I sometimes paint several paintings during the session. The nude model poses were usually short poses – five two-minute poses, two ten-minute poses, then twenty minute poses for the remainder of the session.” Before taking up painting, Bowman worked with figures of another sort. She was a consulting actuary, working with hospitals and government employers who provided pension plans for their employees. “I began painting in my 50s, and love it. I did take a figure drawing class when I was younger, but never pursued art. After careers in business, painting is so enticing.” Bowman’s work, as well as the paintings of the other 30 gallery members will be on display and for sale through the month of December. For further information about this show, you can contact Asheville Gallery of Art at (828) 251-5796, visit the gallery website at www.ashevillegallery-of-art.com, or go to the gallery Facebook page.

Just across the street from the Omni Grove Park Inn lies a destination unlike any other: Grovewood Village, housed in the historic weaving and woodworking complex of Biltmore Industries - a groundbreaking enterprise in the history of American craft and textiles, with ties to George and Edith Vanderbilt, Edwin Wiley Grove, and Fred Loring Seely. In its heyday, Biltmore Industries had a total of 40 looms in steady operation, producing bolts of some of the highest quality homespun fabric in the country, worn by U.S. presidents, first ladies, and many American icons. Learn the story of Biltmore Industries on a guided history tour, offered Wednesday - Saturday at 1pm during April – December. The tour includes a visit to the historic Dye House in Grovewood Village (usually closed to the public), where the original looms, carding machines, mule spinners, and dye vats used to make Biltmore Handwoven Homespun can still be viewed. Tours last approximately 45 minutes and are geared towards adults. There is no charge to take the tour, but donations are appreciated. Spots are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. Maximum 25 people per tour. Meet your guide at the Biltmore Industries Homespun Museum in Grovewood Village.

With Christmas less than two weeks away, join us for a free wine tasting featuring some premium West Coast Wines!  We'll pull the corks on some top-shelf, special-occasion wines, and you're invited!  And you're invited to stop back by tomorrow (2-5pm) for Part 2 of our West Coast Wine Weekend. Christmas comes but once per year, and if ever there were a holiday to splurge on wine(s), this is the one.  Whether you need lavish reds for gift-giving or standing rib-roast, we got you covered.  Need crisp whites for Feast of the Seven Fishes or the classic turkey/ham dinner?  We got you there too.  Trust me, we're here to help during this busy time of the year.  My staff, including myself, has over 40 years of combined wine experience.  We love talking about wine, we love talking about food, and we invite you to stop by the store for live, passionate, and informed consultation.  Cheers, Happy Holidays, and we'll see you soon. All of the featured tasting wines are being offered at 20% off by the bottle on tasting day only! 1. 2016 Rickshaw Sauvignon Blanc (North Coast, California) - I seriously struggle with California Sauvignon Blanc.  They're often uneventful and dull, to put it politely.  But leave it to the fine folks at Banshee Wines to produce a great one at a great price.  Rickshaw is their "second label," and this is textbook Sauvignon Blanc.  Possessing some of the bright and exotic fruit typically encountered in New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc combined with some of the richer, more perfumed nuance of top-flight California Sauvignon Blanc (think Merry Edwards), this is a ton of wine for the money. Special Tasting Price: $13.59/bottle 2. 2016 Syncline Wine Cellars Subduction Red (Columbia Valley, Washington) - This was the surprise hit at our big, free Thanksgiving tasting about a month ago.  I understand why!  A blend of 52% Syrah, 21% Mourvedre, 11% Grenache, and smaller bits and pieces of other classic Rhone varietals, it is drop-dead gorgeous.  Beautifully balanced and integrated, it offers up rich, yet bright notes of spicy, brambly berries along with hints of smoked meat.  Talk about a perfect wine for lamb! Special Tasting Price: $18.39/bottle 3. 2011 Hill Family Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley, California) - In addition to selling grapes to blue chips like Silver Oak, Pahlmeyer, Ramey, and Rombauer, this awesome family-run property makes some awesome wines.  Vintage 2011 was declared "not-too-great" by many of the top wine writers, but I invite them to stop by the store to taste this one and say anything bad about it.  It is scrumptious!  Full-bodied and packed with classic Napa Cab notes of cassis, blackberry, black cherry, mocha, and spicy, toasty French oak, it's the perfect red wine to sip by the fire or to serve with beef. Special Tasting Price: $35.99/bottle

Join the Bernstein Family for their annual Christmas Spectacular! This is an extra-special showing of an Asheville tradition: all proceeds from the Friday, December 15 performance are going to Arts For Life. NOTE: while Arts For Life programs are family-friendly, this show is not! Adult themes abound; line up your babysitter now for this one. Your ticket price includes a pre-show party at River Arts District neighbor, LIFT Studios, with drinks, light bites, and festive fun from 5-7PM. Audience members will walk next door to the Magnetic Theatre for a 7:30PM showtime, and enjoy a special Meet the Cast opportunity after the curtain comes down. VIP tickets for priority seating is available, as well as a small number of pre-party only tickets. This show - like all other performances in this holiday run - is expected to sell out! Get your tickets today. From magnetictheatre.org: Last year’s Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular at the Magnetic Theatre saw the beloved and incomprehensible cousin Jerry get electrocuted, the introduction and training of Jimbo's Latin lover/husband Joaquin, and the usual family squabbles, Santa tirade, and dance numbers. Seeing what new debaucherous sketches the Bernstein writing team will come up with has become a tradition for many Ashevillians, and this year promises to be an exciting one for audiences. What surprises will the latest Spectacular bring? Head writer Lucia Del Vecchio (well known for such hits as MILF: The Musical and Off the Rails, as well as last year’s Bernstein) is at the helm as Director for the first time, and the family is also welcoming a new cast member, Sarah Felmet. “2017 has not been a year filled with laughs,” Del Vecchio said, “and that means we need the Bernsteins more than ever. I don’t think audiences will be disappointed--Baby Jesus is keeping his diaper flask close by.” The annual Spectacular, now in its eighth year, is written from scratch each year by the team of Del Vecchio, Jim Julien, Peter Lundblad, and Genevieve Packer. Newcomer Felmet joins cast mainstays Tracey Johnston-Crum (4-time Mountain Xpress Best of WNC winner, Local Actress), Darren Marshall, Erik Moellering and Glenn Reed. Described by the Asheville Scene as “the holiday show to see in Asheville”, the always R-rated Bernsteins and a host of other characters from the Christmas canon come together to bring The 34th Annual Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular to the River Arts District. This favorite Christmas production will return November 30th through December 22nd at Magnetic 375, with fourteen chances to party with the family. As with past years, the entire run of The 34th Annual Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular is expected to sell out in advance.

Description:
34th ANNUAL BERNSTEIN FAMILY CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR TO BRING LAUGHS, COMEDY SKETCHES TO MAGNETIC 375 Last year’s Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular at the Magnetic Theatre saw the beloved and incomprehensible cousin Jerry get electrocuted, the introduction and training of Jimbo's Latin lover/husband Joaquin, and the usual family squabbles, Santa tirade, and dance numbers. I don’t think audiences will be disappointed--Baby Jesus is keeping his diaper flask close by.” The annual Spectacular, now in its eighth year, is written from scratch each year by the team of Del Vecchio, Jim Julien, Peter Lundblad and Genevieve Packer. Directed by Lucia Del Vecchio. Starring Tracey Johnston-Crum, Darren Marshall, Erik Moellering, Glenn Reed and Sarah Felmet. Scenic Design by Kehren Barbour. Sound Design by Mary Zogzas. Choreography by Elizabeth Evans. Props by Jim Julien. Lighting Design by Jason Williams. Stage Management by Deanna Braine. Produced by Chall Gray The 34th Annual Bernstein Family Christmas Spectacular will be performed at Magnetic 375, located at 375 Depot St, in the River Arts District of Asheville, Nov. 30-Dec 2, Dec 7-9, 14-16, 20-22. Showtimes 7:30 p.m. nightly, 10:00 p.m. late shows December 9 and 16. Advance tickets are strongly recommended. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.themagnetictheatre.org.

Genre: Folk/Americana; Singer/SongwriterShow: 8PM (Doors 7PM)Tickets: adv. $8 / dos. $10Ages: 21+ Hope Griffin Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Hope Griffin was literally born into music. Surrounded by a musical family, she began singing and performing when she was very young. Hope first got turned onto the idea of writing her own music when she received a guitar at age 17. She attended Carson-Newman University and went on to receive a Bachelors degree in classical voice. It was there that her true flair for songwriting developed. Hope’s drive to perform her original works was launched after winning a songwriters contest in college in 2007. She eventually moved to Asheville, North Carolina where she began introducing her angelic vocals and folky lyrics into the music scene.Since her time in Asheville, Hope has entered and won several singer/songwriter contests, including 2nd place of hundreds to open for Dave Barnes. In 2012, her debut single “Hanging In The Balance” made international radio play. She has been in newspapers such as the Herald-Journal & The Mountain Express, appeared on WNC television, and began touring all over the Southeast US. In 2016, she was voted best “Singer-Songwriter” and best “Acoustic/Folk Band” in Western North Carolina, after teaming up with NJ born cellist and Asheville transplant JamieLeigh O’Neil to create a dynamic guitar/cello fusion of original sound. Hope’s “in your-face” style of ballad writing, as well as the duo’s reputation for playing songs that span through the decades has made them popular amongst a wide range of age groups.Hope continues to wow audiences and stretch the musical boundaries by switching from soulful ballads to high-energy blues with ease. Her 6 original song EP, entitled “Say What You Will” released on February 6th, 2015 to a sold out show at Isis Restaurant & Music Hall in Asheville, NC. Her third song on the album titled “A Fisherman’s Life” was awarded “best song” in WNC in 2016. Each song on the record offered a diverse style and hook worthy of its subject matter, but all were linked with Hope’s angelic voice, catchy beats, and poignant imagery. This album was one that fans of folk music and singer-songwriters had been waiting for since Hope first began mesmerizing her audiences, and was the perfect exhibition of her extraordinary talent.Hope can currently be seen touring as a Folk/Americana duo with her cellist JamieLeigh at many venues throughout the Southeast US. Riding on the wings of the success of last year’s album, Hope jumped back in the studio to record a larger project titled "Where the Soil & the Stars Meet", which released on October 31st, 2016. This LP has delivered another strong set of fresh and catchy originals to her already largely packed arsenal of heavy-hitting tunes. If you’re in the area, do yourself a favor and come see her play. Her free spirited personality and ability to tell beautiful stories through song make her a true force to be reckoned with – and a hard excuse to miss. Best "Singer-Songwriter" & "Folk/Acoustic Band" in 2016 -Mountain Xpress Best Song for "A Fisherman's Life" in 2016 - Mountain XpressAcoustic Throwdown Finalist 2015, Asheville, NCWinner; Singer-Songwriter Contest in Black Mountain, NC 2012Brown Bag Songwriter Finalist 2011 & 2012, Asheville, NC web: http://www.hopegriffinmusic.com vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a92J_f1xxAA Jeff Thompson Jeff Thompson is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and performer. He likes to wear fedoras and blazers. He likes when spontaneous conversations with strangers and friends proceed like improvised poems. He often wishes he had a tape recorder in his hand. He usually ends up texting choice phrases to himself, so that he won't forget them. Most of his lyrics come to him, melodies in tow, in the shower or in the last drops of dreaming before waking wipes the slate of his mind dry for the day.He was born and raised in the same city that spawned Louis Armstrong, Harry Connick Jr., Dr. John, and Lil Wayne. His style sounds nothing like any of them. Except maybe Harry. A little bit. Sometimes. He left New Orleans at a pretty young age, and has lived just about everywhere else since then. He spent six months studying Buddhism in a monastery in Bodh Gaya, India overlooking a rice paddy. There were a lot of mosquitoes and it was next to a very loud bus stop. The Thai monks all smoked cigarettes. They were mostly there because their families wanted them to be. Jeff wasn't allowed to have a guitar there, because the monks' code wouldn't let them listen to music, but he smuggled one in. It was a Yemaha. Not a Yamaha. He bought it in Kathmandu for thousands of rupees. Or...eighteen dollars. He wrote one of his favorite songs, furtively, in the wee hours of the morning, just after meditation. He's also lived in Austin, Boulder, NYC, and of course Asheville. He's still in Asheville. He gives it two thumbs up. He thinks he'll probably stick around awhile. He misses New Orleans an awful lot sometimes, but credits his health to having escaped it when he did. He thinks New Orleans is a really nice place to visit. The distilled essence of Mardi Gras, Jackson Square, the Mississippi River, and late night adventures he'd rather not discuss right now flow through his veins, indistinguishable from his blood.Jeff Thompson has won major songwriting contests, even though he thinks it's silly to pit songwriters against one another. He wrestled in junior high and saw his name on more than enough elimination brackets back then. Of course, back then, he barely ever made it past the first round. Jeff won 1st Place in the Eddie's Attic Competition (other winners include John Mayer, The Indigo Girls, and of course the great Chelsea Lynn Labate of Ten Cent Poetry), 1st Place in the Cary, NC Six String Cafe Songwriter’s Competition, 1st Place in the Evening Muse Songwriters' Competition. He was featured in Performing Songwriter Magazine.Jeff Thompson plays all over the Southeastern United States, and has shared the stage with a lot of people you've heard of. He doesn't feel like name dropping, though. web: http://www.reverbnation.com/jeffthompsonmusic vid: https://www.facebook.com/101470733334336/videos/718857888262281/

I took that picture in 1999 in Old Dali, China. I've always kinda liked it. Anyway, I've spent a great deal of time over the past 30 years learning about Tai Chi, QiGong, and other Chinese Internal Martial Arts.  This is my passion.  And I would like to share this with you- at least for an hour. I would like to invite you to my newest book release and free Tai Chi Workshop.  Here you will have the opportunity to get a copy of my newest book about Chinese Internal Arts.  The whole point of all of my teachings is to take these fairly complicated and mysterious arts and make them accessable to the average person. A lot of people tell me that they are interested in learning about Tai Chi or QiGong or things like them, so here is a chance for you to get a start on things like what chi really is, what is so special about tai chi anyway, and how is it different from other health practices like Yoga.  And it is very, very different. Please register here to reserve your spot.  I don't really even care if you buy a book or not, I would just like to share with you some of the teachings that I have had the please of being exposed to over the years. This will be something special. Thanks! Derek Croley

Welcoming another new addition to your family?  Is your older child excited about becoming a big sibling but not sure what their new title really means? Register now for this awesome Sibling Class. The Sibling Class is designed for children ages 2 and older. Each class we sit together and learn the basics about newborns - what they are wearing when they are born, how babies communicate, and what babies need (diapers, clothes, blankets, love). We talk about the process of labor and birth in G-rated fashion - where moms and dads go to have a baby or what it will be like to have a baby at home, how the baby gets out of mom, what are those funny sounds mom is making, and that mom is OK. Children are encouraged to bring a baby doll or baby-sized stuffed animal to class so they can diaper, clothe, swaddle, and hold the baby. They will learn the important ways they can help when the new baby comes home and learn how to "play" with thier little sibling and show the baby love. Each class includes time to read a book, watch a birth story, and do a craft and ebbs and flows to hold the attention of the various ages in the group. Although this class is primarliy focused on the children, parents will learn tips about integrating the new baby to the mix, including ways to welcome the new baby, how siblings can help with the day-to-day tasks a newborn requires, transitioning to a family of four or more, and how to prepare children for the birth of their new brother or sister.  The class will also have resources on what to expect, the changing family dynamics, challenges with older children such as toilet training and sleep.   The children will create a onesie for the new baby and create a big brother/sister tee shirt for themselves. They will also receive "I'm the Big Brother/Sister" certificate upon completing the class  YOU MAY ALSO LIKE: Childbirth Refresher Class We also offer class bundles:  Childbirth Refresher Class + Welcome Little Baby Sibling Class

Broad, ample and phenolic, the 2014 exudes all the classic Varner signatures, structure being the most obvious of these. Yellow orchard fruit, mint, candied lemon, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes are front and center. This is one of the most singular Santa Barbara Chardonnays readers will come across." - Antonio Galloni - 92 points Special Tasting Price: $19.99/bottle 2. 2014 Banshee Pinot Noir (Sonoma County, California) - I had a bottle of this recently and was amazed at the quality for the price ratio.  Tasting like Pinots that often sell for $50+, this one is always good, but the 2014 is great.  Medium bodied, silky, complex and possessing gobs of ripe red fruits, exotic spices, and rooty, earthy nuances, it is a wonderful Pinot at a wonderful price. Special Tasting Price: $21.59/bottle 3. 2014 Vineyard 29 "Cru" Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley, California) - This is a serious treat!  Made by the very talented Kirk Venge, this Cabernet hits all the sweet spots and more!  "The 2014 Cru has turned out every bit as strong as their 2013, which says something. Dense, opaque purple color, wonderfully sweet red and back fruits, an enticing fragrance, silky tannins and a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, with no heaviness or rusticity, are the kind of characteristics that consumers love and will certainly enjoy in this wine that should age effortlessly for at least a decade or more." - Robert Parker - 93 points Special Tasting Price: $42.39/bottle
