Let me explain what it’s like to summarize Rest in Chaos. What you have here is, in the first place, the book of Genesis as deftly reconceived by Todd Snider who has been inhabited by a spirit resembling Philip K. Dick. The rest of the Hard Working Americans are under the direction (or perhaps in the thrall) of an older wiser Jimi Hendrix and a Frank Zappa no less exacting than he was when he departed. It is rock’n’roll music, past, present and future, and that’s no dream, it’s just a fact. There are moments here when the walls of Babel might be falling, there are moments when they are reinvented and every time you try to pin it down, it shows you something else.

“Half Ass Moses,” the third song, ends by declaring “The song wasn’t all that complicated.”

Like hell it isn’t. When, in the very next song, “Dope is Dope,” Todd Snider is a voice more inflammatory and gritty than I have ever heard from him before, “His mother didn’t understand him / Whose mother ever does?” am I supposed to laugh, cry, applaud or beg for mercy.  All that’s really sure is, you’re not leaving ‘til the show’s over. Even if you want to. There’s nowhere else to go, and even if there were, the music’s too good.

So much for metaphysics. The actual physics of the thing is seven billion people out for what they only think is a stroll, armed with nothing more than some quite treacherous Roman candles Rest in Chaos might, if these Hard Working Americans were scientists of something other than sound, be the story of the entropy of the universe, and if you think I’m kidding that’s only because you haven’t taken the deep dive into its complexity, which if not quantum is at least a quandary. Albums aren’t this good anymore; they’re not this ambitious; their parts are not so finely conceived, the risks they take are not so reckless, the ways they resolve contradictions are not so elegant. Most of all they don’t kick you in the preconceptions anywhere near so often. (How did they manage to create harmonies in “Something Else” that recall both the Hollies and the Mothers of Invention?)

Todd’s songs sound like he swiped part of them from Billy Joe Shaver and part from Tim Buckley and welded them together with spare parts from Iggy and Paul McCartney. There’s a nightmare embedded here, and what cares the weight of it, the aspect of doom and the hint of doom is Dave Schools’ bass. Neal Casal, who might be the most under-rated guitarist in rock, is constantly making the chaos more beautiful than you’d think possible. The roots of the sound are in the jam bands and Americana groups and singer-songwriter sessions the band members have played in but when they get to “Throwing Goats” (OK, maybe I should have said Thomas Pynchon or John Barth rather than Dick) and “Something Else” (both parts), they’ve joined the ranks of the rockers who no longer look for interstellar overdrive, because they’ve already found it.

All this is, of course, metaphor. Well, most of it. Some of it. The part about how strong it is, how smart, how completely the product of the past (“stand up for your brother, stick it to the man”) and how anticipatory of one of the best futures anyone has shown us is straight up. It’s one of the most well-sustained albums I’ve heard in years, and what it sustains is not only my faith in rock’n’roll or even how hard the Hard Working Americans really do work to make their magic, but how much it means to them,  which is the only way it can mean very much to the rest of us.

Let me put it this way: I’ve heard Rest in Chaos any number of times and there’s no way I’m done with it. I can tell you about its surface but I haven’t gotten to the bottom of it. I’m not really sure there is one. It is humbling to confront it, and reassuring to know that there is all the rest of our lives for that.  “The High Price of Inspiration”? A bargain.

http://www.hotclubofcowtown.com/

You’d think a band from Austin, Texas with the word “Cowtown” in its name spends its time off from touring herding cattle at a West Texas ranch or maybe in Nashville writing songs about whiskey and loose women. Not the HOT CLUB OF COWTOWN. “We recently took a band vacation to the Gypsy Festival at St. Maries de la Mer in the South of France,” says the band’s fiddler and vocalist, Elana James. Whit Smith, Hot Club’s guitar player and vocalist, is a regular at the prestigious Djangofest Northwest in Whidbey, Island, Washington, and bass player Jake Erwin has the Hungarian folk band Csokolom in regular rotation on his home stereo.

“Our band is fiddle, guitar, and bass, and they can do anything together. We’ve always played a combination of hot jazz and Western swing, but it’s been really a joy to finally distill part of our essence and serve up a record that is purely jazzy,” says James, who in fact was once a horse wrangler in Colorado, as well as a former student of classical music at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France. Says Smith, “Once Elana became aware that in jazz music and swing, you could express yourself more in improvisation, I think that attracted her to it. She still likes classical, and I do too.” Smith grew up hearing his parents play lots of folk music, especially acoustic blues, but as a teenager he naturally rebelled and turned sharply toward hard rock, which still informs his approach to hot jazz and Western swing. The impression that the band is in some way a country act, especially in the current climate of American popular music, is somewhat misleading since the Hot Club’s influences have always been as much the musette music of the smoky bistros of 1930s Paris as they are the hoedowns and Western swing of the mythic American West.

Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that the Hot Club of Cowtown, on their seventh studio album, is finally releasing Rendezvous in Rhythm, a thrilling display of this Texas trio’s virtuosity and its elegant, more European inspirations. “We had lots of people asking us to make a record of standards,” says Smith, “So there you go, here’s a record full of swing standards. We’re not trying to compete with anyone who’s writing the songs. It’s more of a vehicle for one way we really like to play — starting with familiar ground and then improvising from there.” By way of inspiration James adds, “One of the most thrilling nights of my life was when Gheorghe Anghel (the violinist from legendary Romanian Gypsy band Taraf de Haidouks) came over to my house and he and Whit and I jammed on songs like ‘Avalon’ and ‘Exactly Like You’ in my living room with him ’til four in the morning. And then he asked if he could use my phone to call home to Romania. It was the coolest thing ever.”

We can all be grateful then, for whatever inspiration a visiting Romanian fiddler may have sparked, for Rendezvous in Rhythm is a superb collection of traditional material, the Hot Club’s most polished and sophisticated work to date. From the first hypnotic phrases of the lead track “Ochi Chornye” (a Russian folk song, “Dark Eyes”), which builds into a frenzy à la Ravel’s “Bolero,” Rendezvous in Rhythm takes us on a lively journey of raw joy and authentic energy.

Disarmingly intimate ballads (“If I Had You,” “I’m Confessin’”) give way to instrumental virtuosity in the extreme (“Dark Eyes,” “Minor Swing,” “Douce Ambiance”). Pre-WWII influences abound throughout, as with “Back in Your Own Backyard,” a classic made famous by Billie Holliday, Al Jolson’s “Avalon,” and Fred Loesser’s “Slow Boat to China.” “Crazy Rhythm,” through which James sings and swings with sassy authority first appeared in 1928 but sounds as current as any of the band’s original material. “The Continental,” a Reinhardt and Grappelli showpiece, has been intricately rearranged by Smith, whose vocal and hot twin lines warn of the dangers of dancing and the spells it can cast. Smith’s lush treatment of the Fields and McHugh masterpiece “I’m in the Mood for Love” is alone worth the price of admission.

Though many songs in this collection have been revisited in recent years by well-known artists, Rendezvous in Rhythm is the first release by a major touring act to ignite this material with the danceable, swinging vivaciousness that first put it on the map. In order to capture lightning in a bottle, says Smith, “We went back to our way of having everyone in the room together. We recorded it live, right there next to each other so we could hear each other play. I play acoustic on it — not big news, but usually in the past, I would play a mixture of electric and acoustic and sometimes overdub the electric guitar or vice versa. The majority of this album is the three of us there and playing acoustic. We tried to capture the feel of our live shows as much as possible.”

“The interplay is as sleek as ever.”The Times (London)

“The hot jazz is what Hot Club do best, and this is a staggering return to form for the band I once said I could listen to forever. That still stands.”Country Music People

Portioning Steeples in this way, Ben is able to break the traditional album cycle and deliver a diverse array of content to his fans. Within the past year, Ben has complemented the songs of Steeples Pt. 1 and 2 with The Vanishing Point virtual reality app, film scores like Maidentrip, a technology infused production of Harold & the Purple Crayon, an interactive sculptural installation called Livestream, and much more.Through the innovative facets of his artistic portfolio he teaches his audience that the modern artist has no boundaries.Website: http://www.bensollee.comVirtual Reality App: http://www.vanishingpointapp.comMusic: https://soundcloud.com/bsolleeMixtape Collection: https://bensolleemixtape.bandcamp.com/album/montanada-mix- tapeVideos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist? list=PLSKpF0wovtB7FuhGwuzZ35DHiCarz6OPlFacebook: www.facebook.com/bensollee/ Instagram: www.instagram.com/bensollee/ Twitter: www.twitter.com/bensollee"Ditch The Van" Mini-Documentary Series: www.bensollee.com/ditch-the-van/ IMDB / Film Scoring: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3430921/

The once Texan, now New York-based quasi-collective Snarky Puppy has gone from the best-kept secret to one of the most respected names in instrumental music. Although still “underground” in many respects, the band earned its first Grammy Award in early 2014 (for Best R&B Performance) and has earned high praise from critical stalwarts like the BBC, Village Voice, The Guardian, New York Times, and Washington Post, as well as the world’s most respected musicians, from Pat Metheny to Prince. Their most recent album, a collaboration with the Dutch large ensemble Metropole Orkest called Sylva, topped Billboard Jazz, Billboard Contemporary Jazz, Billboard Heatseeker, and iTunes Jazz charts. The band has always used live performance as its chief form of evangelism, and over the last 8 years has maintained a more intense tour schedule than almost any band in the idiom with over 1,200 performances.

Snarky Puppy seamlessly fuses a deep knowledge and respect for musical tradition with sonic and conceptual innovation in a way that is able to reach the most critical- or most carefree- audience. The convergence of musicians from white and black America (who also perform regularly with artists like Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kirk Franklin, Justin Timberlake, Roy Hargrove, and Marcus Miller among others), which occurred while the band was in its adolescence at the University of North Texas, has naturally established a system of balance that instantly draws listeners to the music- raw funk and sensitive dynamics, relentless pocket and lyrical melodicism, lush harmony and soulful simplicity, and most importantly, a delicate mixture of composition and improvisation.

All show proceeds benefit Asheville Symphony Orchestra

Today’s Asheville owes its success to a collaboration of business owners, philanthropists, and public officials who dared to dream to reinvent downtown into a thriving center for the cultivation of community. The biggest dreamer of them all was Julian Price.

This evening, philanthropist, Julian Price will be honored for his achievements by a new collaborative effort from Asheville’s creative professionals. The world premiere of the documentary, Julian Price, will reveal his incredibly diverse contribution to the city. The Orange Peel, Malaprops, Salsas, Mountain Xpress, Self Help Credit Union, The Laughing Seed, the Fine Arts Theatre, and many more businesses have benefited from his support. He revived abandoned buildings and filled them with thriving businesses to make downtown livable again.

“The moment I stepped into Asheville, I felt a connection. I can’t really explain it.” Julian Price, UNCA, Ramsey Library.

Meg MacLeod and Rachel Price, along with Public Interest Projects and the producers of the newly released album, Asheville Symphony Sessions invite you to enjoy an evening of inspiration. Come see and hear the story of Julian Price and Asheville’s renaissance as told by the dreamers who lived it, with live performances of original songs from the leaders of Asheville’s legendary local music scene. “This album serves as a soundtrack for the city,” says ASO Executive Director, David Whitehill. Thanks to the thoughtfulness of Executive Producer, Jessica Tomasin and album producer Michael Selverne, this album will also be the soundtrack for Julian’s story. “I believe that we have created an incredibly musical record that reflects the spirit and the soul of our community,” says Selverne.

“This evening will be a reflection of Julian’s ideals and efforts,” says director Erin Derham. “It is a celebration of collaboration and gratitude designed to inspire this unique community to nurture its authenticity.”

THE IMMERSION Back by popular demand this event is an unforgettable, immersive mystery dinner experience that takes you back to Asheville, 1929. Dinner, music, singing performances, fine acting, a grand dinner and unexpected twist awaits as dinner guests. THE SETUP It is September 1929 and guests at Lex 18 await the arrival of the evening's honoree, native son Thomas Wolfe. Returning for a brief visit to his childhood home, Thomas has been invited to the former Eureka Saloon, now Lex 18, to dine with guests and perform a reading from the manuscript of his new book Look Homeward, Angel. The manuscript is scheduled to be mailed to the publisher this week, so this is a truly private advance reading. The intimate dinner, complimented by a visiting pianist, takes a dark and scandalous turn. Multiple motives, suspicions and chaos ensues. Fortunately, there is a special guest who can solve the mystery and return peace to the evening while revealing a shocking future.. The proprietress of the Eureka Saloon has made great plans for her guests' enjoyment including securing bootlegged wine, beer and whisky, a four-course dinner affair and a hired jazz musician from Washington, DC to hear and see the young novelist he admires. After Mr. Wolfe's reading of a rather spicy excerpt from his "tell-all" novel, a lovely dining experience accompanied by live music and song appears to unfold seamlessly. Suddenly, however, in the midst of all this enjoyment the evening takes a dark turn. A deceptive plot, prickled with mysterious motives and unwanted suspicions, is revealed in the chaos. Luckily, a visiting guest in attendance can turn the evening's digression and resolve the accusations and defensive posturing. While reluctant to step into the role, he may open a bigger can of worms than anyone has bargained for. STYLE AND ENGAGEMENT This uniquely designed dinner experience blends historical facts, setting and personages with fictionalized events that are both fun and fascinating. With an integrated cast of 12 characters, guests' interactions and involvement can range from fully engaged mystery sleuths to casual reserved observers. The only instruction is to play your authentic self. DRESS There is one guest requirement which is to dress for dinner in the style of the 1920s and 1930s. If your closet does not offer the option, we do ask our diners to dress semi formal; jacket and tie for men and cocktail attire for women. A week prior, guests will receive a mailed invitation from the proprietress of the Eureka Saloon (present-day LEX 18) providing directions and information detailing the evening's event. THE MENU & TIMELINE COCKTAIL RECEPTION 6:30 - 7:00PM Your Choice of: French 75: Calls for gin, lemon juice, simple syrup and some bubbles. LOOK HOMEWARD, ANGEL, published in 1929 A legendary author on par with William Faulkner and Flannery O'Connor, Thomas Wolfe published Look Homeward, Angel, his first novel, in 1929. About a young man's burning desire to leave his small hometown and tumultuous family in search of a better life, the work gave proof of his genius and launched a powerful legacy. The novel follows the trajectory of Eugene Gant, a brilliant and restless young man whose wanderlust and passion shape his adolescent years in rural North Carolina. Wolfe said that Look Homeward, Angel is "a book made out of my life." His largely autobiographical story about the quest for a greater intellectual life has resonated with and influenced generations of readers, including some of today's most important novelists. Rich with lyrical prose and vivid characterizations, this twentieth-century American classic will capture the hearts and imaginations of every reader.

Expansive, uplifting, and just downright beautiful, City Painted Gold is one of the most anticipated records of the coming year – at least amongst the loyal fans The Brothers Comatose had won while touring across the country in support of their past two releases. Infused with a sense of relaxed, experienced confidence, The Brothers Comatose offer a southwestern-tinged, rowdy stringband sound that might just make this your new favorite record before you turn it over to side B. Walking lockstep with their undeniable top-flight musicianship is an easy humility. “It’s just one, big, extended Morrison music party,” they say. Brothers Ben and Alex Morrison, guitar and banjo, and lead vocalists, front this rocking string band that has become a West coast headliner and national touring act in a mere handful of years. With bassmaster Gio Benedetti and stellar accompanists Philip Brezina on fiddle and Ryan Avellone on mandolin, their high energy, audience engaging shows have caught fire with fans from San Diego to Seattle to Salt Lake to Silk Hope, NC and beyond.

“It all sort of started before we ever picked up instruments” explains Ben. “Our mom was in a folk quartet that sang beautiful songs in harmony. Alex and I would watch them rehearse for hours when we were kids.” Growing up around band rehearsals and music parties, the Morrison brothers eventually found themselves with instruments in their hands. Ben started playing on his dad’s acoustic guitar and Alex happened upon a banjo that someone had left behind after a household music party.

The brothers learned a mess of classic rock covers, playing casually in their living room and around campfires (and at those famous Morrison music parties) for the next few years. Eventually their genre of choice drifted to broad-stoke Americana and a buddy asked them to come record a few tunes in his garage. Their friend Benedetti had been studying upright bass and they called him up for the session. He couldn’t make it that day but shortly after they all began playing together. They needed a few more good players to round out their sound, and the brothers put up fliers all around San Francisco. A few people answered, including Philip Brezina, at the time pursuing a Master’s degree in violin performance at the Conservatory of Music. “When he showed up, I thought, who the hell is this guy?” says Ben. “He’s kind of a redneck but he’s getting his masters in classical violin. Turned out to work pretty well.” Avellone had shared bills with the Brothers a few times over the years in other bands and was a perfect fit. Ben called him up, and “next thing you know, he’s our mandolin player.”

Soon enough they put the axe to the grindstone, releasing two critically acclaimed records in Songs From The Stoop (2010) and Respect the Van (2012). Those releases led to extended tours with Devil Makes Three, Yonder Mountain String Band and Lake Street Dive, which in turn led to their own headlining club tours and festival appearances including the likes of High Sierra, Delfest, Outsidelands and Pickathon.

When it came to write their third record, the now-seasoned road warriors returned to their home of fourteen years in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco. “We wrote this album living in San Francisco as it was changing from a weird, art friendly mecca to a place that only super rich tech workers could afford,” tells Ben. “Things started changing – venues were closing down, and artist and musician friends moved away. What is San Francisco without its weirdos? That’s what the song City Painted Gold is about and that’s why it’s the name of this record.” Shortly after completing the record, The Brothers Comatose themselves joined the ranks of the displaced.

Eviction brings change, and change inspires creativity. When our heroes got booted from their home city of over a decade, they did not despair – no! They wrote a new and wonderful album. If our heroes maintain their current trajectory we should all be really rather excited about what the future holds.

Description:
Forlorn Strangers is a Nashville, TN based Americana quintet, with members hailing from the great states of Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania & Minnesota. The band is comprised of five songwriters, each having their own distinct sounds & styles that blend into one cohesive voice. Their music is rooted in family harmonies & flavored with guitars, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, & foot stomping percussion. The band was established in 2011 with Chris Banke (guitar, vocals), Benjamin Lusk (banjo, guitar, vocals), and Hannah Leigh Dempsey Lusk (mandolin, percussion, vocals), through a writer's group in South Florida. Songwriting sessions evolved into a committed group, and the three moved to a farm in Waco, TX, for a creative sabbatical. Continuing to grow, they transplanted to Nashville, TN in 2013. Hannah's sister, Abigail Dempsey (fiddle, percussion, vocals) joined the band soon thereafter. In September 2013, Forlorn Strangers released their debut EP, While the Grass Grows. It contains six dynamic tracks: from foot stomping hooks, train songs, and gospel choruses to yodeling ballads and introspective, thoughtful lyrics. It was recorded, mixed, and mastered in Nashville, TN by Jesse Thompson (upright bass, dobro), who joined the band in 2014 for their spring east coast tour. They covered thousands of miles gaining new fans and reviews, playing to rowdy bars and quiet coffee shops. Momentum from tour carried their return to Nashville where they received heavy radio play on Lightning 100, Nashville's independent radio station. In Summer 2014, Forlorn Strangers returned to the studio as a completed quintet to record their second EP, American Magic Tricks. In late August the band set out on the road for a southeastern tour with American Magic Tricks hot off the presses. Forlorn Strangers delivered rousing live sets and the new EP to an ever-growing fan base. Upon return, they were featured as New & Notable on Noisetrade.com, where their record was the site’s fourth most downloaded album among thousands. Forlorn Strangers maintained a weekly residency throughout 2014 at The National Underground on Nashville’s famous lower Broadway strip. In the fall, they were featured a second time as Lightning 100’s Local Artist of the Week and toured through Virginia and the Midwest. They completed a five-week tour in February and early March, covering most of the country east of the Mississippi. In May 2015, the members of Forlorn Strangers became full time musicians and lived on the road throughout the summer. They travelled 20,000 miles playing music all over the country on a national tour. After a short break, they returned to the road in September and finished out the year on tour. In 2015, they've played over 180 shows in over 30 states. They joined the Yellow Couch Management roster, and signed a booking agent from Midwood Entertainment. Forlorn Strangers will record their debut full length album in January 2016, and they're honored to be working with Grammy winning producer, Phil Madeira, at John Prine's studio, The Butcher Shoppe, in Nashville, TN. The record is scheduled to be released early summer 2016 in tandem with a national tour. To help fund the creation of this record, please visit the homepage and donate to the Kickstarter campaign!
