Description:
Asheville Gallery of Art’s July show features the work of Cheryl Keefer whose signature impressionist style interprets moody landscapes as well as urban scenes. The show runs July 1-31 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in Asheville, across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artist on Friday, July 7, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by. The artist enjoys oil painting en plein air, whether on a mountainside or along a marsh. She is often inspired to listen to that still small voice that speaks to her, sometimes quietly, filling her with awe and gratitude, and moving her to create. Simple ideas become visual expressions of her personal epiphanies: morning light glistening on a wooded stream, a sunset punctuating a cloudy sky, fresh spring blossoms highlighting an otherwise gray day, a red umbrella piercing through the rain. In a loud world full of so many inconsistencies, Keefer says she finds wonder and joy in the rhythmic cycles of life on earth, celebrating all seasons in all kinds of weather and times of day. Each composition reflects her endeavor to rejoice everyday, and her hope in the wondrousness of creation. "Momentous occasions of life are few and far between so I want the viewer to see cause for celebration, even in the rain." The artist holds degrees in art history and art education from The University of Alabama, Birmingham, and graduate painting from Virginia Commonwealth University. She enjoys working and visiting with clients and friends in her studio, NorthLight, in Asheville’s River Arts District. Keefer’s work, as well as the paintings of the other 30 gallery members will be on display and for sale through the month of July. For further information about this show, you can contact Asheville Gallery of Art at (828) 251-5796, visit the gallery website at www.ashevillegallery-of-art.com, or go to the gallery Facebook page.

Learn the story of Biltmore Industries on a guided history tour, offered Wednesday - Saturday at 1pm during April – December. The tour includes a visit to the historic Dye House in Grovewood Village (usually closed to the public), where the original looms, carding machines, mule spinners, and dye vats used to make Biltmore Handwoven Homespun can still be viewed. Description:

'Royal Sessions' really marks the beginning of us figuring out exactly who we are as a band," says Ryan Harkrider, frontman of Austin-based soul dynamos The Nightowls. "It's us transitioning from the 'retro' label into defining our own distinctive sound, and this is the first release where we feel like we've totally locked into what our creative process is as a ten-piece ensemble."For The Nightowls, that process began with the release their debut album, 'Good As Gold,' which took Texas by storm in 2014. The Austin Chronicle hailed it as "suave, energetic, blue-eyed soul" and named it one of the Top 10 of the year at the annual Austin Chronicle Music Awards, Austin Monthly named them a Band To Watch, and Texas Music Magazine called the album "a smooth addictive blend of pop, R&B and funk that will delight the band's dance-happy fans." They spent the next year bringing their ecstatic live show to stages around the country, including a triumphant hometown gig at the Austin City Limits Festival, and followed it up in 2015 with 'Fame Sessions,' recorded at the titular, iconic Muscle Shoals studio. That album earned the band serious national attention and love everywhere from The Atlantic and Southern Living to Relix and Pollstar, and it saw their lineup solidify into its current, electrifying status."Our live shows continue to get more and more choreographed and exciting," says vocalist Ellie Carroll of the band's evolution during the last year on the road, which included a much-lauded return to the ACL Festival. "The whole front line is out there dancing and we're always upping our game and our performances. The visual power of ten people doing the same thing at the same time is immense, and everybody in this band is an incredible dancer and performer."Whereas the songs on 'Fame Sessions' were peppered with special guest performances by members of the legendary Swampers rhythm sectionincluding the likes of Spooner Oldham and David Hoodas well as vocal contributions from the Shoal Sisters, everything about the 'Royal Sessions' EP showcases The Nightowls coming into their own as a band."In the past, it was mainly me writing, arranging, and collaborating with a small handful of band members," says Harkrider, "but this one was much more of a full band effort. Id take a song idea to the rhythm section to flesh it out, and then take that to the horn section for their parts, and then from there we'd work out the final arrangement as a full band to make sure everything worked together and everybody got to express themselves and be creative and have their stamp on it."The result is an energetic blend of classic soul and modern pop, as the band transcends the "retro" tag that described their early releases in favor of a more unique sound reflective of all ten personalities, with influences running the gamut from James Brown to Michael Jackson. Bright, bold horns dance and leap over a funky rhythm section, while Harkrider's soulful voice shimmers out alongside gorgeous female harmonies. The infectious vitality of the music is due in no small part to the fact that the band recorded the entire EP live over two days at the famed Royal Studios in Memphis, TN."We're big Al Green fans," guitarist Amos Traystman says of the decision to record at Royal, where Green laid down many of his biggest hits. "We had a string of Tennessee shows while on tour last fall, and we decided to check in with Boo Mitchell over at Royal Studios to see if we could record a few songs while we were in Memphis. We were writing stuff on the road and scrambling a bit to get the material together last minute, but the sessions were great. It's always fun for us to be in a room with so much history."The EP kicks off with "Right Around The Corner," which encompasses so many of the band's strengths, from punchy horns to call-and-response vocals steeped in the kind of timeless soul music the band grew up on."I felt lyrically that we needed to have a song that was true to our experience as a band over the last six months," says Harkrider," so this one tells the story of us being on the road and working and missing our family and friends, but it's also a reminder that even though were out there doing our thing, were always going to be close to home and there when they need us. Theres a gang vocal at the end that we all did as a band in the studio, and it was one of the most rewarding recording experiences ever because we were all in there together as a family.""Can't Hold Me Down" is a frequent Nightowls show-opener that's rooted in the kind of unshakable optimism and positivity that make the band's live performances such feel-good, uplifting, and memorable events, while on "Clean It Up," they offer a clear glimpse of their transformation and where they may be headed with the next full-length, as 'Thriller'-era horns mesh with gritty soul vocals and spacey electric guitars. Elsewhere, "Gotta Keep Moving" calls to mind the brass-fueled hits of Chicago, and "Dont Wanna Leave You Lonely" pays subtle homage to Green."That one is a little outside what we'd normally do progression and arrangement-wise, says bassist Rob Alton, "but it ends up working so well because it features everyone really brilliantly. Theres several guitar tracks that, without each other, wouldn't work, but when you put them together, it creates a really cool texture that Al Green has on a lot of his records.""There's a great horn interlude and background harmonies," adds trumpeter Michael Rey, "but above all it's that drum sound and groove that makes this work. Its the simplest and hardest thing to do, just to play open and to play straight up and down, but our drummer, Ben Petree, does it fabulously."In the end, as much as for any musical evolution, the 'Royal Sessions' may one day be best remembered in The NIghtowls' catalog as the recording that marked their transition from a band into something more, something far deeper. In that sense, they didnt' just find their sound while recording this EP, they also found themselves: soul brothers and sisters in a true royal family.

The film screening will be preceeded by two short sets of Sparklehorse tunes (and more) from Angela Faye Martin and Martin McNeill. Following the screening of the film, there will be a short Q&A with some of Mark Linkous's long time friends and collaborators. A documentary about the late, enigmatic indie-rocker, Mark Linkous, (aka Sparklehorse) will make both its U.S and European debut this April (2016). The Films U.S. premiere will be in Linkous hometown of Richmond, Virginia with screenings following at the Chattanooga and Macon Film Festivals and then making its European debut at IndieLisboa (Portugal) with further festival dates to follow.A cult and hugely influential figure in the alternative music scene, the critically-acclaimed Linkous had a dramatic life that saw him battle with drug and alcohol addiction, paralysis, and debilitating mental illness that resulted in his eventual suicide.Sparklehorses music was heralded by his peers and critics; a mix of delicate pop, discordant punk and melodic odyssey; it has been described as "defiantly surrealist... with all manner of references to smiling babies, organ music, birds, and celestial bodies. Collaborators included PJ Harvey, Tom Waits, The Flaming Lips, Danger Mouse, David Lynch, Thom Yorke (Radiohead), and Nina Persson (The Cardigans) to name but a few. After Linkous tragic suicide in 2010, U.K. based filmmakers Alex Crowton and Bobby Dass were inspired to create a film about Marks life and music, having previously worked with the singer to make promo film. They would invite Linkous friend and collaborator, Angela Faye Martin to invoke a narrative about the artists darkly powerful oeuvre. With an eye for the poignancy of his brief life of 47 years, they embarked on a loving portrayal of the life and work of a creative genius at odds with his world anti-creative forces Linkous metaphorically referred to as, witches of white noise. The film features interviews with Linkous himself as well as; Jonathan Donahue & Grasshopper (Mercury Rev), Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), David Lowery (Camper Van Beethoven), Emily Haines (Metric), Adrian Utley (Portishead), John Parish (PJ Harvey), Matthew Wright, Ed Harcourt, Gemma Hayes and others.COLD MOUNTAIN novelist Charles Frazier on the film: Mark Linkouss musicthe long chords, distortions, and halting rhythms is like the sound of someone thinking, feeling, and creating at just the moment I hit play. Angela Faye Martin

Facebook
LinksWriting songs and wandering the wilds of western North Carolina is Angela Faye Martin's passion. Before moving to rural Macon County, she spent her early days leading bands in Georgia that ranged from jangly rock to proto-punk-funk. During a spate of songwriting after her arrival, she met an an 88 year-old WWII vet who lived across the mountain from her and who introduced her to his remote rural neighbor, Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse. They became fast friends, and when they weren't perusing the contents of abandoned mountain homesteads full of mouldering lace and broken clocks, she and Linkous would collaborate on a collection of her deeply personal and place-based songs for an lp entitled, PICTURES FROM HOME (Totemgirl Records, 2009). In the aftermath of Linkous's untimely passing in 2010, she began work on ANNIVERSARY (Totemgirl Records, 2013), an lp full of memorial for her late friend. It was during this grief that she met English filmmakers, Alex Crowton and Bal Dass who would inspire her to write and narrate the tribute documentary "The Sad and Beautiful World of Sparklehorse".

LinksHailing originally from London, McNeil released his country drenched and melancholic debut album ‘Martin McNeil & The Dissidents’ in September 2012.

The forthcoming ‘Silver Moon" album reunites McNeil with longtime collaborator and producer Mark McRae. Recorded in Woodstock, London & Berlin the sessions feature an eclectic ensemble of celebrated musicians inc. Jerry Marotta (Stevie Nicks, Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney), Brad Pemberton (Ryan Adams / Willie Nelson) and Jon Graboff (Norah Jones / Mavis Staples). Silver Moon is due for release June 2016.

An atmospheric, evocative and cinematic songwriter, McNeil's soulful delivery explores the same world weary themes and dusty heartbreak in the grand poetic tradition of Neil Young, Jeff Tweedy, Ray LaMontagne and Elliott Smith.

UK producer and DJ Zomboy, one of the biggest names in bass, has gone from strength to strength over the past few years. 2014 saw the release of his eagerly anticipated LP ‘The Outbreak’ on Never Say Die Records, which allowed him to expand his musical horizons and explore new styles. The album was incredibly well received, charting at No.1 on iTunes in the US, Canada, Mexico, Austria, Germany, Italy, Guatemala, Czech Republic and New Zealand.

This coincided with an extensive, sold out US tour of the same name, that saw him deliver his inimitable live performances to the length and breadth of the country – before rounding the year off in spectacular style with a first time appearance in the DJ Mag Top 100.

With recent remixes under his belt for Fedde Le Grand, Dillon Francis and a chart topping collaboration with Skrillex, 2015 is set to be another year of world domination for Zomboy.

Genre: Irish PunkCover: CA$H DONATION$Show: 10PMAges: 21+Black Irish TexasEmerging from the local cut-throat and highly competitive music scene of Austin, comes Black Irish Texas. And out of the proclaimed live music capital of the world they have exploded on the scene like a whiskey drenched force to be reckoned with. They have shared the stage with such International acts as Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, Social Distortion, and the Street Dogs just to name a few, as well as local Austin legends such as the Dicks and the Flametrick Subs. The band started in 2004 after a few lineup changes and many tribulations, they have managed to keep their anything-but-common spaghetti western/Americana/punk infused Irish American act together just long enough to finally release their debut album “To Hell with the King.”With backing from Jameson Irish whiskey and support from legions of local and regional fans they released their first full length album and have been running all over the country throwing their no holds barred Irish American party gaining devout followers everywhere they play.Black Irish boast members of Austin favorite’s such as Mr. Lewis and the Funeral Five, Flatcar Rattlers, Los Hispanos,UK, The Bulemics, and Hipsterectomy just to name a few. With members from each of those bands bringing to the table their own particular styles and influences, your current line-up of James Fitzsimmons on guitar and vocal duties, Mark Maughmer II on fiddle, James Sheeron on drums, Shannon McMillan on upright bass and Bil David Zarate on banjo, you are basically looking at a powder keg lit by a few shots of Jameson. And what a site it is.Do not, I repeat, do NOT try and pigeonhole these guys as an Irish pub drinking band, regurgitating overheard covers of “danny boy” and “whiskey in the jar” . In high demand at every venue from Stubb’s and Emo’s Austin to the Abbey pub in Chicago, Black Irish Texas is a coming to a venue near you. web: http://blackirishtexas.com/vid: https://youtu.be/ecQSh61mKZM
