Description:

Described by SF Weekly as a "collision of Django Reinhardt and David Grisman," Taarka is the new acoustic "supergroup" (Flagstaff Live) "presenting masterfully deep americana and gypsyjazz string band music!" Led by the husband-and-wife team of David Pelta-Tiller (mandolin, tenor guitar, vocals) and Enion Pelta-Tiller (five-string violin, vocals) Taarka fills out its unique sound with award-winning bassist Troy Robey and prodigious young guitarist Mike Robinson, Taarka is bringing their otherworldly, energetic music to venues across the US, Canada, Europe and Mexico.David, a versatile picker raised in Virginia on a steady diet of bluegrass, Celtic, classical and gypsyjazz, and Enion Pelta-Tiller, an award-winning classically-trained violinist who can switch seamlessly between Bartok and bebop (not to mention Gypsy jazz, punk, rock, bluegrass) began their journey together in 2001. After meeting at a Brooklyn Browngrass gig, the two began a Gypsy jazz busker act in the New York City subway before hitting the road as Taarka.Taarka's live shows strike a balance between well-crafted songs and spirited instrumentals these days, expanding on its beginnings as a purely instrumental string band putting a modern spin on Gypsy and Eastern European folk music. Taarka has drawn from wide-ranging influences over the past 10 years. Sophisticated listeners would be able to distill flavors of Western and Eastern folk traditions, jazz, rock, bluegrass, old-time, gypsy, Indian, and Celtic music all in a string band setting. Taarka has lately been gaining notice for their songwriting, which is informed by traditional bluegrass, oldtime and folk from America and Europe, 19th century poetry, and rock inspired by performances with some of the greatest names in songwriting today, including Darrell Scott, Greg Brown, James McMurtry, and Nathan Moore, but which incorporates sweeping pop and popping gypsy elements.Since 2006, when David and Enion landed in Lyons, CO, known for its bluegrass and new acoustic scene their compositional output has taken on a decidedly American aura, with vocals added to enhance the stories told in their songs. Their fifth studio album, Adventures in Vagabondia, was released in January 2013. Taarka's powerful acoustic rock instrumental, "A Whole New You," was recently included as part of the soundtrack to Maximum Pictures feature-length docuementary, "1971", to be released nationwide Feb 6.Taarka's joyous recordings benefit from starry guest performances and David's masterful production work, each a carefully crafted travelogue tracing a phase of the groups evolution. Yet unsurprisingly, Taarka's calling card is its colorful live show. Of Taarka's performance at the Oregon Country Fair, Synthesis Magazine wrote, Taarka began driving the painted and costumed crowd into a dancing frenzy they combined Roma, Klezmer and jazz, infusing their rousing and exciting tunes with breakneck Zappa-esque breakdowns and insurmountable gusto. Regardless of your particular musical tastes, Taarka is a band that simply must be witnessed. The band is equally potent whether as a down-and-dirty duo act or a stellar extended line- up featuring a top-notch array of fellow travelers. David and Enion have performed with members of the Grateful Dead, Phish, and String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain String Band as well as Darol Anger, Joe Craven, ALO, Keller Williams, Danny Barnes, Steve Kimock, Taj Mahal, Widespread Panic, The Samples, and Aquarium Rescue Unit, Kaki King, Rob Wasserman, Tony Furtado, The Motet, Dan Bern and The Everyone Orchestra.Taarka has performed at major festivals across the country including High Sierra, Pagosa Folk n' Bluegrass, Joshua Tree Music Festival, Oregon Country Fair, Sisters Folk Festival, Telluride Bluegrass, Mendocino Music Festival, Bumbershoot, Seattle Folklife, Nedfest, Lightening in a Bottle, Berkeley World Music Festival, Aspen Bluegrass Festival, San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival and The Millpond Folk Festival and many more.

For The price of a fuzz pedal, learn techniques from the son of Frank Zappa.

Dweezil Zappa’s music camp Dweezilla has a motto “Learn And Destroy.” It refers to destroying the boundaries that confine music creativity. At camp students are in total immersion for 4 days of music instruction. While on tour with Zappa Plays Zappa Dweezil will be previewing some of the guitar concepts he teaches at camp in a special event prior to each concert.

“I transformed my guitar technique before starting Zappa Plays Zappa out of necessity to play my dad’s most sophisticated and challenging melodies. I’ve found a lot of exciting new approaches to the guitar. I started Dweezilla music camp as a way to share this information with guitarists. I’m excited to present an opportunity to share thoughts on my approach to guitar with students of all levels before each show on tour.”

Dweezil Zappa was born on September 5, 1969 in Los Angeles—the son of Frank and Gail Zappa. It was inevitable that from the moment of his birth his life would be filled wall-to wall with music (his father having listed his religion as “musician” on Dweezil’s birth certificate). Dweezil’s early years were spent largely away from the spotlight—something of a rarity for the child of a celebrity, but perfect for cultivating a close relationship with his family.

Having watched his father perform concerts from the side of the stage since he was in diapers it was no surprise that he began to show an interest in music early on. At 6 years old he received his first guitar, a Fender Music Master from his dad. It wasn’t until he was 12 that he began to show a serious interest in manipulating the instrument to make music.

Having primarily heard the music his father was working on or listening to at home while growing up, Dweezil soon found himself exposed to some new sounds on the radio. Besides his father’s music he began listening to the Beatles, Queen, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who and Jimi Hendrix. Like many aspiring guitarists of his generation, Dweezil ‘s ear was caught in a stranglehold by the trailblazing guitar styles of Edward Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. He listened to their records for hours on end trying to figure out a way to translate what he was hearing in his head to his fingers at the other end of the guitar. Along the way, he had opportunities to ask his dad for some help. “I remember asking Frank to help me figure out the song ‘Revelation/Mother Earth’ from Blizzard Of Oz. I really didn’t know anything about chords and in that song Randy Rhoads was using classical music elements that were really new to rock guitar at the time. Frank helped me learn the finger picking intro.” To gain more fundamental knowledge of technique and scales Dweezil was fortunate to have some assistance from one of the musicians in his father’s band at that time, Steve Vai. Dweezil became remarkably proficient in a very short amount of time due to his intense practicing sessions.

duende [duen-de] (noun) 1. a quality of inspiration and passion 2. A heightened sense of emotion, expression and authenticity 3. a spiritDuende, the title of The Band of Heathens' fifth studio album (and eighth overall), marks their tenth anniversary as a group, and it certainly applies to its overall theme about the collective search for connection and communion in a technology-fueled world increasingly splintered, distracted and lonely. As band co-founder Ed Jurdi, who first learned of the term, explains, "It's the essence of the artist," or as partner Gordy Quist says, "It's a word we don't have an equivalent for in English, Artistically, that's where we tried to set the bar, to do what this band does best."Indeed, Duende lives up to those high ideals, a stylistically diverse effort that takes a leap beyond their last, more acoustic, introspective effort, 2013's Sunday Morning Record, with an eclectic batch of material that shows where The Band of Heathens has been, but more importantly, where they are going. There are high-energy rockers like the Keith Richards-Chuck Berry guitars and barrelhouse piano in "Trouble Came Early" as well as the Grateful Dead-by-way-of J.J. Cale Oklahoma boogie in "Keys to the Kingdom," and the New Riders pedal steel country twang of "Green Grass of California," an ode to the more potent strains of sensimilla on the dispensary shelf and a fervent plea to "legalize it."Duende also touches on some of The Band of Heathens' favorite topics, from the sacrifices of a life lived on the road ("All I'm Asking") to the limits of materialism ("Keys to the Kingdom"), social media absorption ("Cracking the Code"), and a moving depiction of Mexican immigration in an age of increased discrimination ("Road Dust Wheels").Thematically, Quist's "Cracking the Code" comes closest to reiterating the album's desire to reconsider the value of relationships and priorities in a world of virtual reality and social media. "While modern technology has certainly allowed us to stay in touch over vast distances something a band that lives on the road certainly appreciates it doesn't really provide the authentic connection we crave," says Gordy. "We've created a portal through which we lose ourselves and miss what's really going on right in front of us, hiding the fact our supposed connected culture can be a really lonely place.""I feel the album brings together all our influences, everything we've done over the years as a band," explains Jurdi. "We've touched on every part of our career our roots, some singer/songwriter contemplative stuff, some high-energy rock 'n' roll. It's all us, the record we were supposed to make. Ten years later, that's what keeps us coming back."Engineer/co-producer Jim Vollentine (Spoon, White Rabbits, And You'll Know Us by the Trail of Dead) helped the album's diversity sound coherent, adding unique touches such as mellotron and drum machines to the loping rockabilly of tracks like "All I'm Asking."The term "Americana" was practically invented to describe The Band of Heathens' approach, which has mutated almost as much as the genre to which they're identified. And while the Rolling Stones and The Beatles remain touchstones on songs like "Sugar Queen" and "Deep Is Love," respectively, influences as diverse as Sly and the Family Stone (in the psychedelic fuzz-tones of "Daddy Long Legs") and Latin music ("Road Dust Wheels") also rear their heads. Literary inspirations also come into play, ranging from a character in Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar depicted in as a strutting cougar in "Sugar Queen" ("She even talks dirty/When she's on her knees to pray") to Tom Standage's A History of the World in Six Glasses, which recounts how beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea and Coca-Cola have shaped culture and civilization to modern times ("Trouble Came Early").Duende is The Band of Heathens playing to their strengths, unapologetically constructed as an old-school 10-track, two-sided vinyl album (which it will be released as, with a second disc encompassing four songs from their Green Grass EP released earlier this year). With Duende, the proof is in the results. Let them change your mind.

Debra has a voice which beautifully combines Celtic and Appalachian sensibilities...deeply satisfying, lyrical and musically elegant.” -Roseanne Cash Following a life-long desire to sing and perform, Debra Cowan left her job as a California middle school math teacher in 1997 and went to live in Edinburgh, Scotland for six months. There she learned the art of unaccompanied singing and upon her return to the USA in 1998 began traveling all over New England performing at any open mike within 100 miles of her new home in Western Massachusetts. Almost 20 years later, she is now a full-time performer who bridges the old and new with a refreshing stage presence. She can be seen in many venues, festivals and museums, heard on both terrestrial and internet radio worldwide and will travel anywhere to sing. Her five recordings have been met with high praise world-wide and in June 2015, she was featured in the UK folk music magazine, Living Tradition. She tours extensively in the United Kingdom and in North America and can also be seen on stage with her good friend, singer and musician John Roberts. Debra is a proud member of American Federation of Musicians Local 1000 and endorses Harvey Leach guitars. Between travels, she makes her home near Worcester, Massachusetts with her husband and their two cats, Hazel n’ Herman
