Asheville Gallery of Art December 2016 Show “All Squared Away” “All Squared Away” for December at Asheville Gallery of Art Asheville Gallery of Art’s December show, “All Squared Away,” will feature small works by 21 member artists. All pieces will be 18 inches square or smaller. The show will run from December 1-31 during gallery hours 11-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sundays. The public is cordially invited to a reception for the artists on Friday, December 2 from 5-8 p.m. The gallery is located at 82 Patton Avenue in Asheville, across from Pritchard Park. A wide range of subject matter, media, and styles will be represented. Those participating in the show enjoy the challenge of working small and within limited perimeters. Artist Jane Molinelli said, “Small paintings can be just as dynamic and energetic as large ones while providing a focal point or touch of color and interest to any collection.” Asheville Gallery of Art hopes art lovers will not only enjoy the show, but will use it to purchase affordable (and packable) works of art by local artists for holiday gift giving. As well as the small works in the show, the works of 31 artists will be on display and for sale through the month of December. For further information about this show, telephone Asheville Gallery of Art at (828) 251-5796, visit the gallery website at www.ashevillegallery-of-art.com, or go to the gallery Facebook page.

"Repair is often out of necessity. Something falls apart and we put it back together. We as a group will pause in this stage where things have fallen apart. Bring something that is broken. It can be something that just fell apart, or something that you took apart but now can’t seem to put back together, in several pieces. Something that had a long life or you just bought it.  Bring the pieces. We will start by holding what is not together. We will each tell the story of the parts. Our pieces together will lead to a new possible future. " Join Michael Swaine at The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design, with a broken object in tow, to experience a new kind of fixing. About Michael Swaine:  Michael Swaine was originally trained as a ceramicist, but he works in a variety of materials, methods, and media and has had a long-time focus on collaborative work - in particular with Futurefarmers. He has participated in exhibitions at teh Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California; SITE Santa Fe, New Mexico; The Guggenheim, New York among others. Ripe, open knit, and packed with plummy dark fruit, spice, and smoky mineral notes, it is ideal for consuming solo or with roasted meats, stews, or chili. Tasting Price: $12.59 on mixed 3-packs | $11.89 in mixed six packs | $11.19 in mixed cases 2. 2012 Chateau Valcombe Ventoux Rouge "Epicure" (Southern Rhone, France) - As the "Epicure" in the name suggests, this is the perfect lamb or beef stew wine! It's our new Wine of the Week, and this blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan from old vineyards in the Ventoux region tastes like Chateauneuf du Pape but costs a fraction of the price. Robust and hearty, it offers up notes of ripe dark fruit, kirsch, peppery spice, and Provencal herbs. Yum! Tasting Price: $19.79 on mixed 3-packs | $18.69 on mixed 6-packs | $17.59 on mixed cases Special Wine of the Week Price: $19.79/bottle or $17.59/bottle on your solid 6-pack 3. 2012 Chateau Aney Haut-Medoc (Bordeaux, France) - Château Aney was built in 1850 by the family that gave it its name, and today, their holdings are located between Margaux and Saint Julien on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot with bits of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the wine sees 12 months of aging in French oak. Classically styled with notes of dark currant, crisp black cherry, earth and spice box, this is the wine to serve with your Christmas standing rib roast. Tasting Price: $24.29 on mixed 3-packs | $22.94 on mixed 6-packs | $21.59 on mixed cases

Description:

This album is definitely about growth. So says Smo, whose growth as a force in American music cannot be denied. Having topped 50 million views on YouTube, sold more than 450,000 tracks and dominated both the country and rap charts, the charismatic Tennessee-bred artist, outdoorsman and family man draws fans from across all social boundaries. How does he do it? He speaks truth. He lays down epic rhymes that challenge listeners to party when they can, to champion the values on which they were (or should have been) raised, to look straight into the eyes of life, to laugh and love and even get angry every once in a while if that helps make things right. These many sides of Smo are represented proudly on his latest album. Yes, We The People is about growth, in creative horizons as well as in a worldview nurtured by time and trial. But its also about the growth it inspires among his ever-expanding audience, who see their own stories mirrored in his.I see things today in a clearer way than I ever have, as a father, as a son, as an American, Smo insists. Its about that growth for me as an individual and hoping I can influence my listeners to grow with me.From working dawn to dusk on his family farm to riding border to border on his bus, from meeting and entertaining his fans, aka Kinfoke, from fusing elements of raw country and hip-hop in a makeshift studio to the private moments he shares via his Smo On The Go video posts on Facebook, Smo incorporates all that has come his way into a unique and personal sound.A new and especially difficult turn impacted Smos approach to music and life in general. Last year Smo underwent quadruple bypass surgery, an experience that cant help but change those who survive. When youre facing death and youre given a second chance with life, you find that you value that life much more, he reflects. Ive been guilty in the past of taking the simple things for granted. Today I stand here, clear-minded, with my eyes set on my target.Smo addresses this in his manifesto, a creed laying the foundation for the album. It pulses throughout We The People, in the empowering proclamation of the title track, the determination to succeed that drives Say My Name, the spice and sass that conjures P-Funk on a backwoods parade with Struttin In The Stix, an irresistible call to rock the house from sunup to last call on RetoxAnd then there are bases Smo has never touched until now, including a gentle love lyric framed by string quintet on Thing For You and his first duet with a female singer: Josie Dunne as the girl waiting for her traveling love on Never Get Old.Getting the opportunity to work with Josie was a blessing for me, Smo says. In fact, its a blessing for me to work with all of the singers on this album rather than the other way around. When Casey Beathard and I cut the demo for We The People and he sang the chorus, his voice was just so majestic that I knew that no one else could fill that position. My longtime friend and backup singer Haden Carpenter has just the right amount of funk and country for Struttin In The Stix. We had Michael Ray on Rollin, a phenomenal artist and a dear friend. William Michael Morgan is amazing. Theres so much old country in this young mans voice. You dont find that a lot nowadays. Plus Corey Crowder, Todd Nielson, Hookman, Brandon Rogers, Jimmy Burney Being able to work with each of these great talents wasnt really work at all.Smo gives much of the credit for bringing We The People home to his producer.Theres a reason why you havent heard a production like this on my past projects, he says. Its because of my good friend Jason Mater. Our creative process was like, as soon as I thought of an idea, he was already playing it. I wanted to test the boundaries and really dig into the multi-genre experience. As soon as my manager Dan Nelson and I heard what Jason was capable of, we knew he was the guy for the job.You can hear the fruits of their collaboration from the opening tracks mock-inaugural of Smo as our Commander in Chief to the uplifting closer, My Kind America. One clear example is Movin On Up, an affirmation of hard work and harvest it yields, built on a handclap gospel beat that keeps peaking to the edge of explosion and then backing off.Why this groove tease? Smo smiles and explains, We talked about how every day we work to achieve the top goal we set. Then as soon as we achieve that goal, we set another one. And when we reach it, we set another one. We never really reach the top because once we get to what we think is the top, we set standards for our next level. So, he concludes, we dont have to get to some exploding point because were never gonna feel like we can stop and quit working. For us, that point doesnt exist.Which takes us back to that idea about growing, about how Smo sees himself and the world that motivates him to work and perform and connect and lift it all just a bit higher tomorrow. If We The People is about setting down his beliefs and what hes learned, then the last track is about wrapping it all up and offering it to his kinfoke. My Kind America is at the end for a good reason, he says. I began with We The People to get listeners thinking about this album. Its about finding the things that make us who we are as Americans. Its about loving. Its a reminder that, hey, even though were going through hard times and people are feeling a certain way about other people, were fortunate to wake up every day in this country where you can stand up for your belief. You dont have to sit on the sidelines and do nothing. Dont put all of your energy into complaining about how things are. Get up and do something about it.Make this Your Kind America.

Andy Shauf is a storyteller, a singer of heartbreak and regrets, isolation and loneliness, reflecting his prairie surroundings in Regina, Canada. Meticulously written over four years, Shauf's The Bearer of Bad News is a warm and welcoming album, bathed in weathered piano, dampened drums, softly-strummed guitars and clarinet, which lends its unique timbre to frequently brighten or hauntingly underscore the songs' darker undercurrents. Fans of Elliott Smith, Nick Drake and Harry Nilsson, take note.

Description:

Fruit Bats started in the mid 1990's as the four-track project of Eric D. Johnson (of The Shins, Califone & Vetiver) The name "Fruit Bats" was actually one of many cryptic monikers scrawled on the cassettes. Somehow that one stuck. Some of the other band names included "Holiday Inn," and "Senseless Tripe." For a number of years there were many warbling, feedback laden tapes, but no shows and no band.In early 2000, Johnson joined the cast of characters that made up Califone and the whole Perishable Records family. It was this kinship with a bunch of like minded folks that coaxed the Fruit Bats from out of the bedroom and turned the shy lo-fi project into a real band.Brian Deck produced the first record, Echolocation, which featured hi-fi versions of many of the old four-track tunes. The album sold poorly, but garnered rave reviews in places like Mojo and The Village Voice, the latter calling it "a mini-masterpiece of zoology rock." Shows were offered, and a band was hastily put together. The lineup would remain ever shifting after that, always revolving around Johnson and a rotating cast of characters.Fruit Bats would sign with Sub Pop records in 2002 and release 4 successful records with the venerable Seattle imprint. They then toured the world, played on the TV and had a generally great time. Besides the aforementioned "zoology rock," the two best obscure genres the Fruit Bats have been linked to by the press are "bootgazer," and "rustic pop." So there you go.They'll be touring with My Morning Jacket in fall 2015, and will release their sixth full-length in early 2016.

Before even releasing their first album, U.K.-bred four-piece The Struts opened for The Rolling Stones in front of a crowd of 80,000 in Paris, got hand-picked by Mötley Crüe to serve as the supporting act for their four last-ever performances, and toured the U.S. on a string of sold-out shows that demanded the band move up to bigger venues to accommodate their fast-growing fanbase. Now with their full-length debut Everybody Wants, lead vocalist Luke Spiller, guitarist Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliott, and drummer Gethin Davies reveal the supreme mix of massive riffs and powerfully catchy melodies that’s already slain so many adoring audiences around the globe.

“Every time we go into the studio we just want to channel exactly what we’re all about onstage—something big, fun, unapologetic, rock & roll,” says Spiller. “We love a song that makes everybody sing along, and touring quite extensively over the past few years has given us a lot of inspiration to bring that kind of energy to our album.”

The follow-up to Have You Heard—a 2015 EP whose lead single “Could Have Been Me” hit #1 on Spotify’s viral chart, earned more than 2.5 million Vevo/YouTube views, and shot to the top 5 on Modern Rock radio charts—Everybody Wants unleashes anthem after arena-ready anthem. Pairing up with producers like Gregg Alexander (former frontman for New Radicals) and Marti Frederiksen (Aerosmith, Mick Jagger) and recording in such far-flung locales as a refurbished London church and a studio in the Spanish region of Andalucía, The Struts prove the iconic power that’s prompted Yahoo Music to name them “one of the most exciting and electric performers in rock today” and MTV to proclaim the band “well on their way to bringing rock & roll back to the forefront.”

Throughout Everybody Wants, The Struts offer their own undeniable twist on sweetly sleazy glam-rock, delivering huge hooks and making brilliant use of Spiller’s otherworldly vocal range. Even the album’s breakup songs come on full throttle, with “Mary Go Round” backing its dreamy acoustic balladry with heavy drums, blistering guitar work, and fantastically glam-minded lyrics (“I can’t even pour myself a glass of wine/Because every glass is stained with your lipstick shine”). Also evidence of The Struts’ romantic sensibilities, the sweeping, heart-on-sleeve intensity of “A Call Away” offers a stirring testament to love against the odds. “It’s about when I’d just moved to America and had a girlfriend back home, and everyone was asking how I was going to make it work,” explains Slack. “The song’s saying that we’ll make it work no matter what, no matter how many miles apart we are.”

At the core of Everybody Wants are power-chord-driven tracks like the hard-charging album-opener “Roll Up” (a “larger-than-life caricature of the person I am onstage, very glamorous and very cheeky,” according to Spiller) and the gritty-yet-exhilarating “Kiss This” (a breakup song whose “message is really about standing up for yourself—sort of our version of a ‘Young Hearts Run Free’-type song, but in a rock mentality,” Spiller notes). With its hip-shaking rhythms and euphoric harmonies, “Times Are Changin’” recaps the band’s recent glories (“I’ve been to New York City, I met the Rolling Stones”), while “The Ol’ Switcharoo” blends bubblegum melodies and horn-backed grooves into the world’s most irresistibly fun tribute to girlfriend-swapping.

The Struts also show their skill in merging high-drama storytelling and pop-perfect melody on Everybody Wants, with “Black Swan” spinning a darkly charged tale of warring families and star-crossed lovers. “I’d thought that ‘Black Swan’ would make a good title, so Luke and I started writing it together one night in his room,” recalls Slack. “We finished the melodies, and the next morning he’d come up with this whole tragic love story to put into the lyrics.” And on “Where Did She Go,” The Struts close out Everybody Wants with an infectiously stomping epic that first came to life when Spiller was just 15. “My parents had just moved to this horrible seaside town, which wasn’t a great place to be if you’ve got long hair or you’re just an individual in any way,” he says. “One night I was walking home quite drunk and started singing to myself, as you do, and this melody eventually came to me. I remember thinking, ‘What kind of melody could you get a whole football stadium full of people to sing along to?’, and then kept going from that.”

Forming The Struts in Derby, England, in 2012, all four members began making music as teenagers, initially finding inspiration in groups like Oasis and the Libertines and then tracking their idols’ influences to discover the glam bands that would one day shape their own sound. “When we first started, we both just wanted to make fun, happy rock songs with big choruses—the kind of thing that bands like Slade and T. Rex used to do,” says Slack of his collaboration with Spiller. The trademark tongue-in-cheek swagger of classic glam also played a key part in the naming of the band, Spiller points out. “We were in rehearsals and someone saw me strutting around as we were playing, and made the suggestion that we call ourselves The Struts,” he says. “We loved that from day one—it absolutely represents what we’re about.”

Largely on the strength of their dynamic live performance, the Struts fast built up a major following and started selling out shows all across Europe. Along with landing the Stade de France gig with the Rolling Stones, the band took the stage at the 2014 Isle of Wight Festival, with Spiller decked out in a shimmering-blue cape custom-made for him by Zandra Rhodes (the legendary designer who formerly created costumes for Queen’s Freddie Mercury and Brian May). Over the past few years Spiller’s role as a style idol has prevailed, with the New York Times recently spotlighting the singer in a fashion-centric feature and Ray Brown (an Australian designer who’s also dreamed up outfits for AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, and Lady Gaga) coming up with costumes for The Struts’ run of dates with Mötley Crüe.

In their lavish stage presence and magnetic appeal, The Struts have more than demonstrated a preternatural command of monumental crowds. But while all that glitz and flash never fail to thrill, the band’s impassioned music and high-powered spirit also fulfill a far greater purpose. “The main mission of the band is to bring back that feeling of fun and rock & roll, especially to all those people who are bored by what’s going on these days,” says Spiller. “We really believe that music, when it’s done right, can help you escape the present moment, and then just send you somewhere else entirely.”

Atlas Obscura is hitting the road. Atlas Obscura Co-Founder Dylan Thuras is taking a short road trip, traveling to cities and towns looking to add new hidden places to the Atlas and meeting up with Atlas fans to share adventures along the way. In short, we are looking to find and celebrate the pluralistic beauty and diversity that helps define both America and Atlas Obscura.  At each location the day will end with a meetup at a local bar or coffeeshop for a place-a-thon, a celebration of what is weird and good in the world around us. Come with ideas, and if you have one, bring your laptop. We will get to know each other and add great new locations to the Atlas! ASHEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA We've realized recently that Atlas Obscura only has a few listings in Asheville. We're certain that there is much more wonderful weirdness waiting to be discovered within the city, but we need your help! So come meet up with Dylan, join him for a day of Atlas adventures and bring your ideas for the most under-appreciated hidden wonders of Asheville. Feel free to come to any, all, or just one of the day's events and be sure to introduce yourself. Dylan will be the one with the Atlas Obscura totebag. 2:30 to 4:00 at the Asheville Pinball Museum We will meet up at the Asheville Pinball Museum the dozens of vintage pinball machines and more than 20 classic video arcade games they house. Located in the old Battery Park Hotel in downtown Asheville, which is itself on the National Register of Historic Places. Come meet up, talk Asheville strangeness and play some vintage pinball machines! (Admission is $13 for all you can play pinball. If you just want to meet up and not play you can opt out of the fee.) 6:30 - 8:00 at the Asheville Odditorium Finally, for those who couldn't make it out to the adventures (or for those who did and want to relax afterwards with a drink) we will be meeting at the Odditorium on of Asheville's most unusual bars to discuss all of Asheville's great weird locations over food and drinks. This is a chance to hang and talk AO. If you have a laptop we encourage you to bring it so that we can help add your amazing place suggestions to the site! P.S. The new Atlas Obscura Book will be available for purchase and signing from Dylan at the bar!

Quality is timeless. Just ask The Hot Sardines.

In the talented hands of the New York-based ensemble, music first made famous decades ago comes alive through their brassy horn arrangements, rollicking piano melodies, and vocals from a chanteuse who transports listeners to a different era with the mere lilt of her voice.

On French Fries & Champagne, The Hot Sardines’ new album for Universal Music Classics,    the jazz collective broadens its already impressive palette, combining covers and originals as they effortlessly channel New  York speakeasies, Parisian cabarets and New  Orleans jazz halls.

Bandleader Evan “Bibs” Palazzo and lead singer “Miz Elizabeth” Bougerol met in 2007 after they both answered a Craigslist ad about a jazz jam session above a Manhattan noodle shop. The unlikely pair— she was a London School of Economics-educated travel writer who grew up in France, Canada and the Ivory Coast, he was a New York City born and raised actor who studied theater at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia—bonded over their love for Fats Waller. Influenced also by such greats as Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday, they began playing open mic nights and small gigs and by 2011, they headlined Midsummer Night Swing at New York’s Lincoln Center.

The Hot Sardines’ self-titled debut album, named by iTunes as one of the best jazz albums of 2014, spent more than a year on the Billboard Jazz Chart, debuting in the top 10 alongside Michael Bublé, and Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. The accolades began pouring in for the band: Downbeat called The Hot Sardines “one of the most delightfully energetic bands on New York’s ‘hot’ music scene,” while The London Times praised their “crisp musicianship” and “immaculate and witty showmanship,” declaring them “simply phenomenal.”

Dylan LeBlanc's sophomore album Cast The Same Old Shadow will be released on August 21st by Rough Trade Records. Born in Shreveport, Dylan moved to Muscle Shoals, Alabama when he was 11 and he is the dark horse of the vibrant and close-knit musical community there that includes Alabama Shakes, Secret Sisters, and Civil Wars to name a few.The songs on the new album are fraught with recollections of love, loss and regret. He was admittedly an emotional wreck when he wrote them, but emotions of that sort often lead to the most heartfelt music around. Since his debut album Paupers Field, Dylan has grown as a singer and a songwriter and a guitar player. He's experienced a lot of life already, and while he's still trying to figure it all out, he's ready to share the melancholy emotions he loves so much.

Slim Cessna's Auto Club

LinksIn September 2016, Slim Cessna's Auto Club is releasing its new album The Commandments According to SCAC. It has been twenty-four years since Slim Cessna parted ways with The Denver Gentlemen, that grand progenitor of the peculiar strain of Gothic Americana unique to the Mile High City, to form Slim Cessna's Auto Club with a group of talented peers.

Many bands with a long and successful run like that would stick close to its roots. But rather than rest on well-earned laurels, the Auto Club challenged itself to break with well-worn modes of operating for the new record.

Wallace Stenger may have captured the spirit of the west in his 1971 novel Angle of Repose. Jim Thompson surely exposed the lurid underbelly of the Western experience. Cormac McCarthy definitely evoked the conflicted, tortured spirit of small town life on the frontier. William Faulkner and Flannery O'Connor informed all of them with a humor and soulfulness. It is that literary tradition that imbues the harrowing and celebratory sound and riveting stories of Slim Cessna's Auto Club. And for a full twenty years it was largely in that realm of art that the Auto Club reveled and garnered a loyal cult following well beyond the boundaries of The Queen City of the Plains.

But no band can be satisfied with treading the same territory that it helped to define forever. The
Commandments According to SCAC, will be the first full length album of original material released on the Auto Club's own imprint, SCACUNINCORPORATED.

The title evokes the themes of cosmic punishment and redemption that have served the band's songwriting engine so well in the past. But this set of songs sounds more hopeful and expansive, a quality that was always there but this time out the brighter sides of the songwriting are emphasized. Hints of this saw early full-flown expression on 2008's Cipher and Unentitled from 2011.

With The Commandments, however, the Auto Club seems to step forward into the promise of its own
possibilities. It remains capable of the heady darkness and celebratory intensity with which it made its name.

Now that charmingly dusky and spare sound breathes with a color and delicacy of feeling that perhaps sat in the background in times past. Maybe it's partly due to the greater creative contributions from longtime collaborator Rebecca Vera and The Peeler or the inclusion of upright bass player Ian O'Dougherty. But the core of the band's songwriting and sound is anchored firmly in the vision of Slim, Munly Munly and Lord Dwight Pentacost.

Whatever the true source of this transformation, The Commandments According to SCAC sounds like a band marshaling its creative inspiration to mark out a new chapter of its existence. When you get to see the Auto Club tour following the album's release, you'll get to see an already mighty band reinvigorated by this new spirit as well as by the fire that has long burned in its collective belly.
