Asheville Gallery of Art’s February show, “Who's New?,” will feature the work of three new artists, Jane Molinelli, Juditta Musette, and Elise Okrend. The diverse styles represented by the artists, from expressive to abstract to realistic, highlight the range of work found at AGA, Asheville’s longest established downtown gallery. Jane Molinelli prefers to use the term contemporary painter to describe herself rather than using the description of abstract artist. “In reality, my work is rarely an abstraction of anything. I use color, line, and mark to convey an emotion, memory, or experience. In this way, I believe I can best communicate to the viewer using the universal visual language we all share.” She works primarily in acrylics and oil, incorporating other media in her paintings, such as pastels and graphite. Eight recent graduates of Haywood Community College will exhibit work in four media: Crystal Allen and Trish Salmon in clay, Deanna Lynch and Rebecca Porche in fiber, Linda Azar and Becky Burnette in jewelry, and Valerie Berlage and Brandon Skupski in wood. One of the gallery’s original artists, Johnson has extensively documented wilderness areas both domestically and abroad, including the Blue Ridge Parkway and Appalachian Trail, National Parks of the Northwest, Alaska, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, and (two years ago) Peru. Johnson’s current work brings him back home with a series from the region just south of Asheville. Johnson comments, “I have been living north east of Asheville for over forty years and have gotten to know most of the major natural areas in that direction. For the past two years I have been living in Asheville, making it easy to access natural areas in the region south of Asheville with which I was not familiar.
