Fracking Stories   [Film]

Event Date: 06/02/2015  Event Time: 7:00 PM to 12:00 AM

Description:
Imagine if the water you gave your family made them sick. This is a real fear facing communities where fracking is currently taking place. Even when landowners say no to drilling, contamination from fracking nearby can still expose them to toxic chemicals against their will. Although fracking is now legal and permits can be issued by the state, there is still much that can be done to protect North Carolinians from the dangers of fracking. This requires people coming together in their own communities and taking civic action, to stand in solidarity and send a strong message that the people of NC do not want fracking and we will work to protect our families, public health, quality of life and property rights. Join us for Fracking Stories - an event featuring six short documentaries that expose the public health and environmental consequences of hydraulic fracturing, and the ways that communities are coming together to protect their land and water. Come learn about the issues, talk with community members, and

Event Date: 06/05/2015  Event Time: 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Description:
Asheville Gallery of Art will feature the work of Al Junek during the month of June. His show, titled “Recent Works,” will feature Junek’s focus on the atmospheric landscape of mist, fog, or colorful skies so typical of the weather systems found in our mountain area. “I try to share the beauty of a particular place or moment in a way that will transport viewers to that spot so they can experience much the same sights or feelings that moved me to stop and take it in,” says Junek. The artist is fascinated by light and its resulting values, which are captured in many of his works. Junek attributes his affinity for painting atmospheric effects to having lived in coastal areas over the years and now living in the Blue Ridge. Most of the works in the show will be watercolor or pastel on paper along with some pencil drawings. Also included in the exhibit will be a sprinkling of experimental watercolors on canvas and birch panel. A native of Texas, Junek began painting in 1989 after formal training at

Who Is In Control? with Steve Brown   [Spiritual & Religious]

Event Date: 06/12/2015  Event Time: 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Description:
It’s no secret that Christians often have “control issues”—in our religious expressions, spiritual disciplines, churches, and relationships with others. Each of us needs to ask: Do I really trust the¬¬ sovereign, kind, and wise God who does all things well? Come study His Word and what it reveals about human frailty, sin, and our wasted efforts at trying to “be” God. Be amazed by the work He does when His people come to the end of themselves and gain inspiration to trust in Him for all things.
