Buncombe County Sheriff Calls for New Conference on Video Gambling

12:47 PM

ASHEVILLE, NC - Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan is holding a news conference to discuss new video gambling laws and how they affect enforcement actions.

Lt. Ross Dillingham said the news conference is scheduled for Monday at 3 p.m. He said Duncan has fielded calls from residents talking about people spending all their money in one sitting at video gambling machines, found at convenience stores and grocery retailers throughout the county.

Video poker machines were outlawed in the state in 2006. In their place, sweepstakes-style games began popping up, where a customer would use a computer game with the likeness of a slot machine to determine if they'd won money.

State Alcohol Law Enforcement officials began raiding the businesses, but companies manufacturing the games got an injunction against the raids.
