The new leaves are a bright emerald green, the first spring flowers are carpeting the forest floor and the woods are full of the sound of birdsong. But who are the singers? Finding and naming the singers can take a lot of time and can also be a real challenge, so it helps more than just a little to have a working knowledge of the voices in the woods. How do you go about doing that? There are many methods one can use, but the best thing to do is to immerse oneself in the outdoors and track down the singers. Learn a few at a time and maybe the names and voices will eventually merge. What we plan to do today is to immerse ourselves in the learning and knowledge of bird vocalizations. We will do a little "class work", but most of the day will be spent listening to the birds around us, learning their songs and becoming familiar with the common birds sounds birds in our area. Cost is $35 per person including lunch
Mon, 12 May 2008 1315-2008-05-14 07:30:00 Art Saves Lives http://www.ashevillenc.com/events?type=user&per=50&pg=1#a1272-Wed14May20081100AM Starts at: Wed, 14 May 2008 11:00 AM
End: Thu, 15 May 2008 02:00 PM
Description: ***ART SAVES LIVES WORKSHOP CREATING ART CARDS*** May 9 Intro May 10 3 hour workshop. EFT theory states that negative emotional experiences disrupt the energy meridians that run through our body. The physical changes we feel from those disruptions, such as anxiety, depression, difficulty breathing, or even headaches, become attached to the memory of the traumatic circumstance. Our bodies make no distinction between unresolved traumas that occurred yesterday or ten years ago. If they are unresolved, they effect the body just as intensely as the moment it happened. Properly applied, EFT quickly realigns the energy meridians with respect to the negative
Thu, 24 Apr 2008 1307-2008-05-14 19:00:00 Art Saves Lives http://www.ashevillenc.com/events?type=user&per=50&pg=1#a1272-Thu15May20081100AM Starts at: Thu, 15 May 2008 11:00 AM
End: Fri, 16 May 2008 02:00 PM
Description: ***ART SAVES LIVES WORKSHOP CREATING ART CARDS*** May 9 Intro May 10 3 hour workshop. We will bird a wide range of elevations from 1200' to as high as 6000' to ensure a wide range of birds. Warblers will be well represented with at least 15 species being possible. From Canada and Blackburnian Warblers in the high peaks of the Blue Ridge to Swainson's and Pine in the rich lowland forests we should see an excellent selection of these jewels of North American birdlife. From our base in the attractive city of Asheville we have easy access to a wide range of ecosystems and will first work some of the riparian forests with their large sycamores and tulip poplars before exploring some fine cove forests with their rich Southern Appalachian flora and fauna. We'll then climb higher into Southern and Northern Hardwoods forests; each
Mon, 12 May 2008 1317-2008-06-12 09:00:00 Roan Mountain Wildflower Trip with Scott Dean http://www.ashevillenc.com/events?type=user&per=50&pg=1#a1318-Thu12Jun20080900AM Starts at: Thu, 12 Jun 2008 09:00 AM
End: Fri, 13 Jun 2008 03:00 PM
Description: Widely known as a scenic attraction for well over a hundred years, Roan Mountain is now part of Pisgah National Forest. At 6,280 feet, the "bald" summit is the highest point of the Iron Mountains, which form a barrier between North Carolina and Tennessee. Spread along the ridge is Roan Mountain Gardens with 600 acres of Catawba rhododendron gardens and 850 acres of Fraser Fir and spruce. This natural garden on the crest of the mountain is usually in full bloom during the last two weeks of June. The unique blossoms of the Catawba Rhododendron are light red, pink and many shades of lavender. We can take a walk across Round Bald at carver's Gap, where there is a stunning group of over 75 spectacular flame azaleas, and if we are lucky we'll see Gray's Lily, a species endemic to the Southern Appalachians. In addition to the varied plantlife, there are such high altitude birding treats as the Alder Flycatcher, Red Crossbill, Hermit Thrush, Veery, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Winter Wren, Chestnut-sided and Canada
Mon, 12 May 2008 1318-2008-06-12 09:00:00
