Area Info / The Mountain Sports Festival

Few events so fully embody Asheville's sense of adventure, its need for excitement, or its legacy of culture so fully as the Mountain Sports Festival (MSF). The annual, three day festival offers a stunning variety of mountain sports events that have been drawing both amateur and professional athletes alike for six years running. With events like the Pisgah Mountain Bike Adventure and the MSF Mayhem Skateboard Contest , it is easy to see why the Mountain Sports Festival has continued to grow in popularity since its inception - Asheville knows adventure when it sees it, and with sports like these coupled with the demos, music, and exhibitors at the Festival Village at Carrier Park, it's hard for anyone to keep away from the festivities.

Of course, the factor that sets this festival apart from other sports festivals is, like the name suggests, our mountains. The Blue Ridge mountains that so scenically surround Asheville add an edge of challenge and endurance to any physical activity that occurs upon them. How fitting then that the 2006 festival's first serious competition was the brutal Mountain Sports Festival tradition, The Town Mountain Hill Climb. This relentless uphill battle to the top was made all the more challenging by the pouring rains that plagued opening day. Fortunately, the rain cleared up by day two, just in time for crowds of spectators to be thrilled by events like the Nantahala Outdoor Center/Subaru Citizen Raft Race, Mission Hospital's Sunset Stampede, the Diamond Brand MSF Climbing Competition and more. The events came to an exciting close with day three's twelve hour multi-sport MSF Adventure Race.
While the excitement was palpable at the Festival's main events, things really heated up with the Mountain Sports Kids events where children were able to try their skills at a variety of fun races and competitions. Whether they were putting themselves to the test in the Diamond Brand Kid's Climbing Competition or having the time of their lives at the Iron Kids Competition, the Mountain Sports Festival ensured that adventure and fun were had by the whole family.

In Asheville, it's not a festival without festivities, and Mountain Sports delivered with the Festival Village. The Village was located along the beautiful French Broad River and populated by outdoor adventure gear exhibitors, food vendors, and of course the Festival Village Mainstage which featured non-stop entertainment. The Festival kicked off with the funky jams of Cadillac Jones and went on solid throughout the festival with acts such as King Johnson, Johnny Sketch, and more. Spectators, athletes, and kids agree, the 2006 Mountain Sports Festival was an unforgettable adventure. One can only imagine what 2007 holds in store.
