Description:
Course Description: This workshop will focus on relabeling resistance to treatment as Pathological Ambivalence (PA). Although therapists who treat eating disorders are all too aware of the ambivalence common to this population, it is often very difficult to know how to avoid getting in power struggles which naturally flow from the client’s ambivalence. PA is generally related to the narratives or schemas which individuals form throughout their life that result in the development of strong but conflicting needs and that when operating, can slow down, confuse or even halt the therapeutic process. If the therapist takes a side when a client is struggling with ambivalence, then the other side of the ambivalence is naturally invalidated such as when a therapist is trying to help the client recover thus siding with the part of the client that wants to recover. The therapist will be most effective when utilizing skills that promote a sense of being on the client’s side without taking any side. These skills empower the change to occur from within and minimize the likelihood that the therapist will become the target of the ambivalence, prematurely discount the client’s beliefs, unknowingly participate in the client’s previously formed scripts or perceive the client as resistant. Skills from many theoretical perspectives such as MI, Gestalt, ACT and DBT will be presented which enable the therapist to avoid these common pitfalls focusing instead on facilitating a resolution of pathological ambivalence and helping the client re-evaluate and change their narratives. Learning Objectives  Following this presentation, participants will be able to: 1) Conceptualize resistance as Pathological Ambivalence (PA) 2) Understand why some individuals are more prone to developing PA than others. 3) Quickly identify common expressions of PA. 4) Utilize strategies for sidestepping power struggles to empower clients to resolve ambivalence from within 5) Utilize evidence based strategies from a wide range of perspectives such as DBT, ACT, MI for dealing with PA BIO: Dr. Linda Buchanan founded Atlanta Center for Eating Disorders in 1993 which was acquired by Walden Behavioral Care in 2017. She is now Senior Director of Clinical Services with Walden, a leading national healthcare system specializing in the treatment of eating disorders (to all genders and ages 11 and up) providing the full continuum of care with facilities in Georgia, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Dr. Buchanan received her master’s degree from Georgia State University and a Diploma from the Psychological Studies Institute (now known as Richmont University) in Christian Counseling from which she received the Distinguished Alumnus Award for her work in founding ACE. Dr. Buchanan then went on to receive her Ph.D. from Georgia State University doing a residency at the Medical College of Georgia. She currently has a book in publication titled A Clinician’s Guide to Dealing with Pathological Ambivalence: How to be on Your Client’s Side Without Taking a Side the content of which she has presented at multiple national conferences. She has published two chapters on her model of treatment of eating disorders which have been used as texts in a local doctoral program for Clinical Psychology students. Additionally, she has published four research articles on the treatment of eating disorders including two outcome studies of the treatment provided at Atlanta Center for Eating Disorders. She has been married for over 30 years and is the mother of two adopted sons.   Continuing Education Credit:  October Road, Inc. is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. Description:
This program is for anyone seeking to grow. The goal of this workshop and the entire curriculum of Consciousness Studies is to create an ever-increasing community of transformed individuals who will transform the world. Listen to Haydn Hasty, President, comments about the workshop here: https://youtu.be/xMZlE44zrPM DESCRIPTION: Most of the time people function on the periphery of their lives. The constant focus on survival, money, being loved, and achieving status and success inevitably produces a misalignment that no medication can cure and no therapy can heal. At the same time, it is this very suffering that eventually forces you to examine your life attitudes and gives you an opportunity to change.  This program is an initiation to living a conscious life, moving from the periphery to the center of who and what you really are. When your inner core is off-center, your outer life is out of balance, too. When your inner being is upright and clear, that center can hold in the middle of a storm, in the middle of everyday difficulties. When you are in a state of harmony, you notice that the day-to-day barriers dissipate. You begin to experience freedom and peace.  As you become more conscious, you see that your inner attitude has the power to move outer circumstances. That is what this weekend is all about: resolving everyday challenges through consciousness. Consider The Realignment Workshop as your next step in accelerating your growth and living a conscious life.

This class bundle includes the one-time, three-hour Childbirth Refresher Class and the one time Welcome Baby Sibling Class. The Childbirth Refresher Class is for women who have given birth previously.  We will cover what to pack, signs of labor, coping techniques, hands-on comfort measures, labor positons, birth preferences and informed consent, and ideas for sibling integration and postpartum planning. Many families need support for siblings with a new baby. The Sibling Class is designed for you to learn about integrating the new baby to the mix, together with your children. Come to class with your older children and learn ways to welcome the new baby, how siblings can help with the day-to-day tasks a newborn requires, transitioning to a family of four or more, and how to prepare children for the birth of their new brother or sister.  The class will focus on what to expect, the changing family dynamics, challenges with older children such as toilet training and sleep.   Select a Sibling Class to attend - you may attend the sibling class whenever it fits your schedule, prior to, after, or in the same month you attend your Refresher class. The children will paint a onesie for the new baby and create a big brother/sister tee shirt for themselves. They will also receive "I'm the Big Brother/Sister" certificate upon completing the class  This class is appropriate for kids 2 and older.   For this bundle you will pick the date of your refresher class and during checkout you will pick the Saturday for your Sibling Class. You can choose to attend the Sibling Class during the same month as your Refresher class, prior to or after your Refresher class - whatever fits your schedule. And now for the fine print...Because our classes often sell out, we do not offer refunds or transfers for non-medical reasons, so please be sure you can attend the class you register for! If you choose to register for class that will begin after 37 weeks, there are no refunds if your baby arrives beforehand.

Welcoming another new addition to your family?  Is your older child excited about becoming a big sibling but not sure what their new title really means? Register now for this awesome Sibling Class. The Sibling Class is designed for children ages 2 and older. Each class we sit together and learn the basics about newborns - what they are wearing when they are born, how babies communicate, and what babies need (diapers, clothes, blankets, love). We talk about the process of labor and birth in G-rated fashion - where moms and dads go to have a baby or what it will be like to have a baby at home, how the baby gets out of mom, what are those funny sounds mom is making, and that mom is OK. Children are encouraged to bring a baby doll or baby-sized stuffed animal to class so they can diaper, clothe, swaddle, and hold the baby. They will learn the important ways they can help when the new baby comes home and learn how to "play" with thier little sibling and show the baby love. Each class includes time to read a book, watch a birth story, and do a craft and ebbs and flows to hold the attention of the various ages in the group. Although this class is primarliy focused on the children, parents will learn tips about integrating the new baby to the mix, including ways to welcome the new baby, how siblings can help with the day-to-day tasks a newborn requires, transitioning to a family of four or more, and how to prepare children for the birth of their new brother or sister.  The class will also have resources on what to expect, the changing family dynamics, challenges with older children such as toilet training and sleep.   The children will create a onesie for the new baby and create a big brother/sister tee shirt for themselves.
