Description:
Asheville Gallery of Art’s March show, ‘ARTventure,’ features the work of two gallery artists, Sandi Anton and Anne McLaughlin. The artists chose the show’s name to describe their respective art adventures as they continue to learn and progress through the process of making art. The show runs March 1-31 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sundays. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in Asheville, across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artists on Friday, March 3, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by. Sandi Anton first held a brush in her hand in May of 2009, and fell in love with a whole new world. “Suddenly, all objects and subjects became potential paintings,” she says. Having lived in the French Quarter in New Orleans for 12 years, much of what she paints and the subjects that intrigue her the most are architectural in nature, though she continues to challenge herself with other themes. “I strive to paint from a pure and creative mind, for the pleasure of those who love the movement and architecture of a vibrant city.” She claims that experimentation and practice are keys to her process. Most recently Anton says she is exploring a “less is more” concept in her paintings to leave more to the imagination of the viewer. Anne McLaughlin, during her life-long career as a pediatric physical therapist, took on outside interests like photography and world travel. Those trips always included art museums and galleries, which led her to a study of art history. She and her husband moved to Madison County, NC, in 2002. “Being in this area rich with beauty spurred me to paint and has pushed me to continue my study of art.” Her work is both landscape and figurative. “I am happily painting and I am totally addicted to the dance of color, light, and texture, and the expression of my observations and my imagination,” says McLaughlin. “I hope my works provide the viewer with a range of feelings—mystery, peace, joy, or fun, and that the painting opens the imagination of the viewer to experience and appreciate the work.” As well as the paintings of the two artists, those of the other 29 gallery members will be on display and for sale through the month of March. For further information about this show, you can contact Asheville Gallery of Art at (828) 251-5796, visit the gallery website at www.ashevillegallery-of-art.com, or go to the gallery Facebook page.

Ashevilles own Dave Carey recently passed away at 103 years of age! Dave was a National Champion Senior Tennis Player and an even more remarkable person, supporting the sport of tennis in Asheville and around the globe. The Asheville Premiere of the movie Gold Balls is in honor and memory of our friend Dave Carey. "Gold Balls" is a documentary about 5 Senior Tennis players trying to win a National Championship and Gold Ball prize some successful and others with little success. Hop in the van and join the entertaining odyssey that is the mens ultra senior tennis circuit and meet some of the most endearingly grumpy athletes ever captured on film. 80 year old former attorney Ron has spent the last 15 years going after a Gold Ball to no success. Meanwhile, 81 year old former Big 10 basketball coach John collects Gold Balls like daisies in the field. Other competitors include first timer Marcus, founder of Black Tennis Magazine and George, a romantic former naval officer whos always a top contender. Wise-cracking 94 year old Bob is just one Gold Ball away from the all-time record, but has been recently diagnosed with diabetes and doesnt know how long he can continue competing. When Ron decides to travel to all four National Championships, he finds that becoming a champion requires more than he bargained for with hilarious and heartwarming results. Join us on Thursday, March 30 at 7:00 pm at the Fine Arts Theatre for a special showing of "Gold Balls" in honor of NC Tennis Hall of Fame member Dave Carey - one of Asheville's best ever! Dave was nationally ranked #1 during his tennis career which extended into his late 90's, winning several National Championships, therefore collecting the Gold Ball prize. He loved being on the tennis court, and Court 6 at the Aston Park Tennis Center was dedicated in his honor in 2005. Dave was the poster child for the motto Tennis is the Sport for a Lifetime. We'll watch the 88 minute documentary which includes a few local tennis players, honor Dave with a few memories, and hear a brief update on tennis in our local community for all ages - join us to celebrate the sport and honor the player! The evening is hosted by the Carey family, and all proceeds (per Dave's wishes) will benefit the Asheville Tennis Association, a 501c3 non-profit corporation whose mission is to grow and develop the sport of tennis in the Asheville area. All donations are tax deductible. Donations may be made online at http://www.avltennis.com/goldballsmovie/ or mail to PO Box 514, Asheville, NC 28802.

Formed in 2011, the band's mission was to embody the jazz-influenced party culture of the Big Easy in a constantly evolving, high energy funk/soul outfit. Naughty Professors' live performances, which weave together complex compositions and loose individual improvisation, quickly commanded the attention of many notable musicians in town, including George Porter Jr., Galactic, and The Revivalists. With fresh recorded material in the works and a rigorous tour schedule planned for 2016 and beyond, Naughty Professor is poised to soon become the next household name associated with the echelon of New Orleans music.Naughty Professor has shared the stage with artists such as Galactic, Snarky Puppy, Victor Wooten, Rebirth Brass Band, Fitz and the Tantrums, The Revivalists, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Papadosio, George Porter Jr., The Soul Rebels, and many more.web: http://www.naughtyprofessormusic.com/vid: https://youtu.be/RByfhpxnU0s WSG Cole DeGenova Somewhere between a soul pop concert, South Side jazz club, slam poetry reading, and punk rock dive bar, lives the music of Cole DeGenova... Description:
with The Babe Rainbow
If you drive past the 200 block of South La Brea, there is a lamp shop, a pet shop, and a little glass door that says "Casting Agency" above it. Inside you'll find one of LA's most stereotypical rituals, where men & women from all walks of life vie for the attention and popularity of the Hollywood producer. It's a dream factory for some of them. It's also a place where Los Angeles outsiders learn what the city is really like, beyond the sun and surf and celebrities, where every brightly-lit surface eventually faces a cloud.Indeed, the lessons learned by the Allah-Las guitarists Miles Michaud and Pedrum Siadatian, bassist Spencer Dunham, drummer Matthew Correia since their auspicious formation in 2008 have been tempered with experience. Now, with their third album Calico Review (their first for Mexican Summer), their experience transforms once more, this time into wisdom. The band's trajectory, formed around mutual appreciation for the same kinds of music and a host of shared experiences, focuses on both the outer trappings of their home and surroundings, and the through line of darkness that suffuses life in LA county.Where the Allah-Las display their insight, and what really shines across the 12 songs that comprise Calico Review, is the way that the group has pivoted from specific influences and nods to the music they love, to crafting the feelings of freedom, grit, and melancholy in their music. That feeling the peerless capture of music long in the tradition and mood of California pop, the sound that's captured the essence of the LA experience - aligns with their stylistic technique and their experience in the studio environment to create their strongest album to date, one which showcases their developments in songwriting and arrangements. The process began with their self-titled debut, which captured the Allah-Las' live set circa 2012 and continued onward with 2014's Worship the Sun, where they began to experiment with overdubs and writing songs individually instead of as a band. Now, Calico Review showcases a band that's grown confident in its own style to reflect the perspectives of each member, to craft an album that changes up the approach from song-to-song, while retaining their abilities as a cohesive unit.Audiences familiar with the band will recognize the levels of nuance and steadiness the Allah-Las have grown into throughout Calico Review. It's immediate, the first thing you recognize about the band in the opening moves of "Strange Heat," in the amount of control and character burning off of the band's knack for restraint. Songs like "Famous Phone Figure" cradle character sketches over delicate strains of violin, organ, and Mellotron, Correia's drumming carefully underlining a three-note theme that casts a phantom sadness over the proceedings, the group exerting a touch both light and steady enough to bring your mood to theirs. "Could Be You" works off a steady percussive gallop, guitarist Miles Michaud waxing reflexively on second chances while the band focuses on forward motion. "Roadside Memorial" applies the Bo Diddley beat to the open road, Pedrum Siadatian stepping up on vocals, and finding new ways to match his talents to propulsive musical ends. Elsewhere, "High & Dry," featuring drummer Matthew Correia on lead vocals, focuses on the Allah-Las most quintessential and peerless quality: writing emotionally resonant pop, at once direct and detached, casual and knowing, and instantly memorable. The dream factory itself gets called out in the fun, surf-stung number "200 South La Brea," its carnival-like atmosphere reflecting the excitement and anxiety of those who await their judgment. In between releases, the Allah-Las have toured around the world, and will continue that journey in support of Calico Review. The experience of traveling and idle time on tour inspired the group in different ways, and provided the pathways by which the band transports its listeners to a different place, be that wherever they are, and where the band has been. What the Allah-Las present is not necessarily crossing the L.A. River, coin in mouth, on the Riverboat Styx. It's not Raymond Chandler and it's not Raymond Carver. But the band's four members are aware of the pitfalls that stack against the idyllic notion of southern California life that forms from outside of the city. It's a siren call to the hopeful, and it's a successful town for tempering dreams into wakeful reality. Even with over 8,000 people per square mile, there is room for everyone, and then some, to be completely alone, by choice or otherwise.Calico Review bears the mark of four students becoming the teachers, sharing the sentiments of the town they call home. Join them. There's a lot to learn.

Northern Italy is home to some of the country's most well known and greatest wines. From easy-going sparkling wines and refreshing whites to big, structured reds, the region has a wine for every type of palate. We invite you to stop by the store this Friday to sample some of our new favorites! Up first, it's an estate-grown Prosecco from a family run estate -- this is a rarity for Prosecco as most of these wines are made at large facilities. Trust us, you will be able to taste the difference! Up next, we'll pour you a deliciously refreshing Arneis, one of the Piemonte's most important white grapes. To finish, you'll taste an exquisite Barbera from old, organically farmed hillside vineyards..........this one's got a little age on it too. Translated, it's drinking really well right now. Stop by, taste, learn, and save on all of the featured tasting wines. Can't make it by, but want to place an order? Just email us at [email protected] The Wines Save big on all of the tasting wines! Mix any 3 of them and save 10%, mix any 6 and save 15%, or mix any 12 and save 20%! 1. NV Tenuta Degli Ultimi "Ciacola" Prosecco Brut (Conegliano-Veneto, Italy) – This estate-grown Prosecco comes from hillside vineyards in the village of Conegliano, long hailed as the best spot in the Veneto for Prosecco production. Fermented completely dry, it offers up crisp notes of apple and tropical fruits, finishing with zesty acidity. You'll be hard pressed to find a better Prosecco for the money! Tasting Price: $12.59 on mixed 3-packs | $11.04 in mixed six packs | $11.89 in mixed cases 2. 2015 Cordero di Montezemolo Roero Arneis (Piemonte, Italy) - Talk about an absolutely delicious, extroverted white! Arneis is the grape, and it literally means "rascal" because it can be difficult to grow. Whatever the case, Cordero di Montezemolo makes one of the richer, creamier versions out there. With creamy pear, peach, golden apple, and floral notes, this calls to mind good White Burgundy but costs a fraction of the price. Tasting Price: $16.19/bottle | $15.29 in mixed six packs | $14.44 in mixed cases 3. 2011 Borgo Moncalvo Barbera d'Asti Superiore (Piemonte, Italy) - Talk about a bargain in super high quality, perfectly aged, certified organic Piemonte red wine! Most of Borgo Moncalvo's Barbera was planted back in the 1950's. These old vines yield a hearty and robust style of wine with soaring aromas and flavors of ripe blueberry, raspberry, and spice. The "bottle conditioning" on this one contributes a soft and supple texture. Tasting Price: $15.29 in mixed 3-packs | $14.44 in mixed 6-packs | $13.59 in mixed cases
