Fundamentals of Homesteading: Keeping Bees From rooftops to orchards, tiny slivers of backyards to expansive farms, beehives are becoming more and more visible and integral in modern homesteads. In this class, we’ll examine things to consider before getting started in beekeeping; discuss hive hierarchy and what precisely is meant by the term “bee space;” delve into hive housing, location, and feeding requirements; explore how to obtain and install honeybees into a hive; and so much more. Read about Ashley English here This class is part of a four-part series on homesteading fundamentals, which offers a broad overview of several core aspects of modern domestic food production. Keeping a flock of chickens, canning and preserving shelf-stable foods, crafting homemade dairy products, and keeping a hive of honeybees are all entry points for shifting the origins of the foods you and your family consume back into your control. Whether you’ve got hundreds of acres or mere sliver of a backyard, these homesteading basics can be implemented right away! Register for individual, a la carte classes, or for the entire series.

Description:

As the buzz of many of hip-hop's young leaders-to-be evolves from loud commotion into hushed whispers, producer Black Milk has stayed relevant by remaining focused on creating music that endures. He's achieved recognition from fans, critics, and his peers as one of the best producers around, and by coupling that talent with his sharp lyricism and stylish delivery as an emcee, he has proven to be one of the most vital hip-hop artists of his generation. This vitality is already clear to those who have tracked Black's career over the last 10 years. He has collaborated with the likes of Slum Village, J Dilla, Lloyd Banks, and Pharoahe Monch, as well as putting out several projects of his own, including Broken Wax (2006) and Popular Man (2007). Black's 2008 album Tronic capped a particularly successful and prolific year, in which he also released collaborative full-length releases with rappers Bishop Lamont and Fat Ray, as well as producing the acclaimed solo album from Slum Village's Elzhi. After suffering numerous personal setbacks in 2009, Black returned triumphantly to the scene in 2010 with Album of the Year. The release saw Black again working to break new ground in hip-hop production and to both refine and redefine his sound as an emcee.Few artists in hip-hop are able to create music that can rise above expectations and defy categorization. Black Milk welcomes the challenge to accomplish what others cannot, and he's doing it not only with his acclaimed recordings but also with an electrifying live show. Album of the Year, recent collaborative projects like the Black & Brown EP with Danny Brown (2011) and Searching for Sanity with Melanie Rutherford (2012), and exciting live performances across the globe continue to elevate Black Milk that much closer to the star status many have predicted.

We believe in taking care of the whole family and a healthy lifestyle starts with a good night's sleep. Lack of sleep is among the top complaints of families with babies and small children. The impact of getting less than five hours of uninterrupted sleep each night for months on end is felt by the entire family. It’s no wonder the divorce rate is higher during the first year postpartum than any other time in a marriage. It’s really hard to be your best self when you’re exhausted. If you're ready to get some sleep this introductory class is a great place to start. MOULIN ROUGE ~ AUDITIONS FOR L'AMOUR Limited to 20 persons per show 6:00pm seating 7:45pm seating THE EXPERIENCE Moulin Rouge Auditions for LAmour is a magical evening to remember; fine French cuisine, contemporary and vintage love songs, farcical magic, wild dancing and a touching story. The show is an hour-long program enjoyed over a leisure one and half-hour dinner. This three-course dinner is paired with a bottle of wine for each couple to share. Vive Le Moulin Rouge, vive LAmour! THE STORY Inspired by the 2001 love story movie, Moulin Rouge, it is 1904, Montmartre, Paris. It is a time between wars, when people where excited to discover extravagant dance halls that brought together a mix of riffraff and girls of easy virtue with the affluent and influential. It was in the Jardin de Paris that the Moulin Rouge became the temple of music, dance and artistic performance. And at this moment they are seeking a new musical dramatist and conducting auditions for a new act. Charles Zidler, Moulin Rouges manager believes he has found his theatre composer in a young American named Jerome Kern visiting from New York. Zidler has also found three new prospects for a new act, a French singer/magician, an English actress and an American dancer who is also the courtesan of a rich tycoon. Madame Oller, Moulin Rouges choreographer and artistic director, is not easy to please and is not easily influenced by the politics of investors but by her audience; an audience that she has invited backstage to view the auditions and draw from them their desires. Over three days of auditions of music, magic and dance performances the artists make new discoveries about their hidden feelings and ambitions. What is clear is that love is emotionally chaotic, blissfully oblivious and often unrequited. DRESS We ask our guests to "dress-up" for this event in cocktail attire. We especially encourage donning on any vintage ensembles from 1900's to 1930's SEATINGS 6:00pm - 7:30pm First Seating 7:45pm - 9:15pm Second Seating THE MENU THE BEGINNING - MISE EN BOUCHE Buffalo mozzarella, olive oil, pesto, tomato THE DESIRE - SHARED Choice of small estate French wine selections (1 bottle per couple) THE HEART OF THE MATTER A platter of French delectables: French sweet baguette Wedge of LAmuse Signature cheese Vegetable and rabbit rillettes French cornichons, pickled carrots, sweet onions Balsamic-glazed salmon fillet Elk steak tartar topped with deep fried onions LOVE'S ENDING Goat cheese with thyme honey and toasted walnut cake or Four-chocolate flour-less cake topped with ganache Price per person: $55.00 Gratuity and 7.25% tax are additional and presented on site Includes: Three course dinner, bottle of wine from our select French wines (1 bottle per couple), dinner show. Homegrown Families Health and Education Center, 201 Charlotte Street, Asheville, will host this sliding scale $120-$360, 6 week long healing group begining Wednesday June 29th from 6-7:30pm.  The indvidual dates for the series are:  June 29, July 6, 13, 20, 27, August 3. Please pick the ticket price below that best meets your financial needs. You do not have to attend all 6 weeks but we ask that if you sign up you are able to attend at least 4 out of the 6 classes.   We all come from our mothers. This is true whether or not our mothers met the tremendous demand and expectations of lovingly nurturing and raising us as their children. Some of us have been wounded by relationships, or lack of relationship, with mothers who did not succeed in this monumental task, and this challenge with our most fundamental relationship can have deep and long lasting impact in our lives. You are invited to begin or further your healing of the mother relationship. We welcome all women who have grown and matured while facing the sorrow, disappointment, regret, anger, and confusion that may be born from a difficult and unfulfilling experience of being mothered, including experiences in which you were not mothered at all. Join us for an intimate gathering to learn ways to cope and heal from your troubled or lost relationship with your mother, to connect with other women who share similar stories, gain tools to explore and work with dysfunctional patterns that arise in our own mothering and to begin nurturing yourself in the way that you have always deserved.  Justina Prenatt and Chama Woydak are excited to join together to share their first co-facilitated offering to the Asheville community. Justina is a licensed counselor who works with women, couples, and families in growing through the many ups and downs of family life and loves to work with group healing dynamics. Chama is well-known as a beloved doula and childbirth educator with a special flair for helping families to face powerful transitions with strength.  Justina Prenatt, MS, LPCA [email protected] www.cloverheartconcepts.com  Chama Woydak, LCCE, CD(DONA), BDT(DONA)  [email protected] www.homegrownbabies.com

Currently out of Asheville, NC, Supatight delivers a high energy live performance that is funk driven and appeals to a wide variety of audiences. While specializing in hard-hitting funk, their music incorporates elements of reggae, soul, jazz, and comedic country. Supatight blends intricately timed grooves with improvisational components resulting in an authentic, full sound, drawing diverse styles from every member of the band. Supatight formed in Durham, NC in 2008 with the original lineup consisting of Tyler Mack (Vocals/Bass/Trumpet), Mikey Domanico (Rhythm Guitar), Max Palmer (Drums), Nigel Kher (Saxophone), and Torrey Beek (Lead Guitar). The original members were spread out at different Universities across NC, allowing the band to build a following from the mountains to the coast. The band relocated to Boone, NC in 2011 where they added Matt Powers (Keys), Will Miller (Drums), and Charlie Evans (Lead Guitar). While sticking to the fundamental funk orientation the band was founded on, Supatight continues to evolve, producing fresh new grooves that have audiences dancing up and down the east coast.

http://www.richardbuckner.com/

Richard Buckner’s career began with Bloomed (1994), a lyrically-dense suite of songs recorded in Lubbock, Texas (produced by Lloyd Maines) and heavily influenced by that state’s tradition of whiskey-soaked poet/troubadors. (Since 1999, the album has been kept in print (with additional bonus tracks) by Rykodisc offshoot Slow River Records at Buckner’s request, the artwork on the back cover was edited to remove his then-girlfriend from the picture.) In January 1996, while living in San Francisco, he recorded an album’s worth of acoustic songs, all of which reappeared in more fully realized forms on his second and third albums. This CD was selfproduced and self-released, and was sold exclusively at his early shows.

Later that year, he signed with MCA Records, for whom he recorded two albums, both produced by J.D. Foster. Devotion + Doubt was released in 1997, displaying a more adventurous, almost avant-garde approach to songwriting and arranging, and featuring backing from members of the band Giant Sand, as well as Maines and Marc Ribot, among others. Its follow-up, 1998’s Since, continues in this style, with an even greater emphasis on detailed production, this time featuring contributions from John McEntire, Dave Schramm, David Grubbs, Syd Straw, and others. Although these albums garnered considerable critical approval for Buckner, they did not perform well enough for his label, and he was released from his contract with MCA (whom he then nicknamed ‘Musical Career Assassins’) shortly thereafter.

Since then, he has returned to recording for smaller labels, to continued critical acclaim and cult status. His 2000 album The Hill – his first for Chicago-based indie label Overcoat Recordings – features poems from Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology (1915), which Buckner set to music. The album plays as a single track, nearly thirty-five minutes long. He returned in 2002, first with the “teaser” EP Impasse-ette, then a full-length entitled Impasse one month later. In early 2003, his self-released, self-titled album was reissued by Overcoat, and was his final release for the label. In 2004, an edited version of Richard Buckner’s song “Ariel Ramirez”, from the album Since (1998) was featured in one of the television ads for Volkswagen’s Touareg. The song, in its original form, was featured prominently in the 2008 horror film, The Strangers. He is currently aligned with the North Carolina-based indie label Merge Records, who released 2004’s Dents and Shells and 2006’s Meadow. Between the two, he released an album with Jon Langford called Sir Dark Invader vs. The Fanglord (2005, originally recorded in Sally Timms’s house in 2002) on Buried Treasure Records. Merge Records released Buckner’s album Our Blood on August 2, 2011. The album was licensed in Europe and Oceania to Decor records. Buckner latest album, Surrounded, was released in 2013 by Merge Records.
