Could you be the voice for an abused/neglected child in the court system? Volunteers needed in Buncombe County North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Program 828-259-3443 or www.volunteerforgal.org for more info No experienced needed – all training and support provided Since January 1, 2017, 360 children have entered the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) program – this means that 343 kids are alleged to have been abused/neglected and are in the court system. Of no fault of their own, these kids are typically removed from their home and placed and in foster care or a kinship placement. Why were they removed from the home? Maybe their parents abused substances, had untreated mental health, or engaged in domestic violence – maybe it was a combination of these factors. Either way, it’s the kids who pay the ultimate penalty as their lives are uprooted, they often change school districts and are taken away from everything they know. There are so many parties in a DSS abuse/neglect case: the judge, parents/caretakers, parent’s attorneys, DSS attorneys, GAL attorneys, investigative/in-home/foster care social workers…it’s easy to see how the kids get lost in the system. That’s where the role of the Guardian ad Litem comes in: to advocate and ensure the voice of the child is heard in court, that their wishes for permanency and best interest are made known to all parties. With so many kids in the GAL program, our office is overwhelmed with cases, and we have a critical need for volunteers to represent children’s best interests in court. There is no experience necessary and we provide all training and support. Being a GAL is a challenging and demanding role, but also incredibly rewarding as you literally ensure the child’s voice is heard in court throughout the life of the case. Our next training begins mid-January – visit www.volunteerforgal.org to complete a volunteer application, or call the office at 828-259-3443 for more information. Could you be the voice for a child?

Asheville Gallery of Art’s January show, “Winter Blues” features the work of 23 member artists. The show runs January 1-31 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The gallery, located at 82 Patton Avenue in downtown Asheville across from Pritchard Park, will host a reception for the artists on Friday, January 5, from 5-8 p.m. Everyone is cordially invited to stop by. What better way to brighten the cold and gray January days than by enjoying a display of great art? Each piece will be an interpretation of the artist’s winter experience. Work will range from serene, snowy landscapes to abstracts in colors calculated to warm and cheer you as you wait for spring. “Our artists enjoy participating in themed shows,” says member Jane Molinelli. “Every artist I know can almost instantly come up with dozens of different angles on how to interpret a given idea. You never know what will be in the show until it’s time to hang it, and that makes it as exciting to create as to see.” The pieces for the show, as well as the work of all 31 gallery members, will be on display and for sale through the month of January. For further information about this show, you can contact Asheville Gallery of Art at (828) 251-5796, visit the gallery website at www.ashevillegallery-of-art.com, or go to the gallery Facebook page.

The children will paint a onesie for the new baby and create a big brother/sister tee shirt for themselves. They will also receive "I'm the Big Brother/Sister" certificate upon completing the class  This class is appropriate for kids 2 and older.   For this bundle you will pick the date of your refresher class and during checkout you will pick the Saturday for your Sibling Class. And now for the fine print...Because our classes often sell out, we do not offer refunds or transfers for non-medical reasons, so please be sure you can attend the class you register for! Music Matters is a series of bimonthly appreciation lectures given by Asheville FM DJs, volunteers, and affiliates. On Thursday, January 18, from 6–8 pm, join AFM for the next presentation in this series, "More Than Blue: The Genius of Joni Mitchell’s For the Roses,” presented by Asheville FM DJ, Sarah B. This event will take place at the Asheville FM Station at 864 Haywood Road in West Asheville. “Most people hear Joni Mitchell’s name and they think of her fourth album, Blue,” says Sarah. “Or they think of her sixth album, Court and Spark. But in between was For the Roses. Lush and somber, stentorian and joyous, wise and wistful, it's a gem of 1972, when Mitchell's voice was at the peak of its versatility.” This presentation is free to the public, with a suggested donation of $5-$50 (pay at the event, cash or credit/debit accepted). Those who donate $50 will automatically become Asheville FM members. Email sara[email protected] to register. Advance registration is required.

Come learn about the Community Resiliency Model (CRM) and the positive impact it can have on you and your classroom. This training will introduce basic strategies for helping you to deescalate your own stress as well as stressed out or upset children. This model has been implemented with much success at Asheville City Schools Preschool, Buncombe County Schools, Asheville City Schools, and Verner Center for Early Learning. Resiliency skills are a valuable tool to help children and adults counterbalance the effects of stress, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and trauma in our daily lives. Description:
We love strong, passionate, intelligent women like the incredible Dolly Parton, so come celebrate her birthday with us with a special screening of the empowering classic movie, "9 to 5"! Dolly's birthday is January 19th, but we're celebrating it a day early by showing the movie and having everyone sign a huge birthday card that we'll send to her.  Also, we will have a drawing for tickets to Asheville Community Theater's upcoming stage production of "9 to 5" as a gift to you! We expect this 7:00pm show to sell out so buy tickets now online or at our Merrimon Avenue location!  We are also showing the movie at 12:00pm, but are not selling online tickets for that screening which we do not expect to sell out.  The 12:00pm tickets are available for purchase the day before on January 17th. MOVIE SYNOPSIS: Franklin Hart is the biggest 'sexist egotistical lying hypocritical bigot' boss on the planet. He thrills in taking advantage of his head female office staff; humiliating, downplaying, and condescending against them whenever conveniently possible, particularly his top assistant Violet (Lily Tomlin). Long exhausted over his gruesome bullishness, Violet, alongside coworkers Doralee (Dolly Parton) and Judy (Jane Fonda) comprise comical methods of "doing him in", when a freak incident occurs. They then manage to kidnap Hart and trap him in his own house, while assuming control of his department, and productivity leaps. But just how long can they keep him tied up? CONTENT GUIDELINES: Rated PG-13 for Drug-Related Humor, Innuendo and some Adult Language including sh*t, *ss and and a few godd*mns. It is typical 1980s movie language. Watch this fantastic film in Asheville's original dine-in theater. There are tables in front of our big, cushy theater seats. Order dinner from our huge diverse menu (vegan options!), and enjoy this rare cinematic experience with 140+ other fans of this film. Also, enjoy a huge selection some of the best local beer from the third oldest brewery in WNC! FAQs What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? There is plenty of parking in front of the building, on each side, and also in a big parking lot behind the building. All parking is free. Asheville Pizza & Brewing on Merrimon Avenue is very easy to find. Only five minutes from I-26, I-240 and Downtown. Can I order food and beverages inside the theater? Yes!  You can order anything from the huge menu of Asheville Pizza & Brewing and drink any of Asheville Brewing Company's delicious beers!  We strongly suggest you arrive at least 30 minutes early so you can order and get settled into your seat before the movie starts. Is there any pre-show entertainment? Doors open at 6:00pm with an hour long collection of unique and funny videos playing before the movie begins. Regulars to our theater always arrive early to enjoy our pre-show which changes at each screening. How can I contact the organizer with any questions? Email us at [email protected] if you have any questions. Please do not call our location as the staff who answers will likely not be able to know the answer.  Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? Seeking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha is considered the gateway to Buddhist practice. Through engaging with these "Three Refuges," we are provided with the context, methods, and support for the transformation of suffering. In this series of three classes, Dr. Lye will share with us his reflections on Buddhist notions of faith, the value of dynamic engagement with doubt, and the non-dogmatic trust and clarity that can arise from holding both. This is a good opportunity for those curious about Buddhist practice, as well as a good way to start the new year for "old timers."

Links“Karen Dalton and Joanna Newsom melt together in the form of Gaelynn Lea and set about absolutely obliterating
your heart.” -Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys)

“The way her voice resonates is so unusual and beautiful, like nothing I’ve ever heard before.” -Jess Wolfe (Lucius)

“Gaelynn Lea, the winner of NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest, makes music like nobody else.” -Bob Boilen (NPR)

Classically trained violinist and songwriter Gaelynn Lea has been bewitching scores of fans with her experimental and
ambient takes on fiddle music, an approach that incorporates her love of traditional tunes, songwriting, poetry and sonic
exploration. Her work most recently won NPR Music’s 2016 Tiny Desk Contest, a competition drawing submissions of
original songs from more than 6,000 musicians across the country. Gaelynn Lea has been playing violin for over twenty
years, developing an improvisational style all her own. She has performed alongside many notable Minnesota musicians
over the years, including Alan Sparhawk, Charlie Parr, and Billy McLaughlin.

On March 3, 2016, Gaelynn Lea was named the winner of NPR Music’s second-ever Tiny Desk Contest. The video entry of
her original song “Someday We’ll Linger in the Sun” rose to the top of over 6,100 submissions from around the nation,
chosen as the unanimous favorite among the contest’s six judges. The very next week, Gaelynn performed a moving Tiny
Desk Concert, at which the show’s host Bob Boilen said “there was hardly a dry eye.”

Gaelynn Lea’s musical reach has expanded significantly because of the Tiny Desk Contest. She began a touring nationally in September 2016, and in December 2016 she performed in Europe for the first time as support for Low’s Christmas tour. Gaelynn Lea will continue this musical journey well into 2017, touring throughout the US and UK.
In addition to performing, Gaelynn Lea has had a busy year in the recording studio. She released her debut solo album
entitled “All the Roads that Lead Us Home” in November 2015. It pays homage to the traditional fiddle tunes and
beloved standards that Gaelynn has been playing for over a decade. But of course, there is a twist! Gaelynn used her
Memory Man looping pedal to create winding layers of sound underneath these familiar melodies.

She released a version of her Tiny Desk Contest winning track, “Someday We’ll Linger in the Sun“, on May 5, 2016.
Several months later Gaelynn recorded and released a 6-track EP titled “The Songs We Sing Along the Way“, backed by
guitarist Al Church. In November 2016, she followed up this EP with a full-length holiday album, “Deepest Darkness,
Brightest Dawn“, once again accompanied by Al Church.

In addition to performing, Gaelynn also loves to do speaking engagements about disability, overcoming challenges, and
the joy of music. She has a congenital disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta, or Brittle Bones Disease. Gaelynn is a strong voice in the disability community; she uses her music as a platform to advocate for people with disabilities and to promote positive social change. In October 2016, Gaelynn was invited to Yale to give a TEDx Talk titled “Disability and Sexuality: Forging Identity in a World that Leaves You Out”. Gaelynn Lea believes society must work harder to prioritize accessibility so people with disabilities can participate fully in their communities and use their talents and gifts without barriers or discrimination.

LinksSix years.

Four original albums.

Thousands of shows around the country.

Three years after picking up a guitar in a college dorm room, Anthony Mossburg left the stability of a full-time job to chase after the only thing that made him feel alive; music.

What followed over the next four years was a series of accolades, achievements, risks, near-misses, and setbacks that indefinitely shaped him as an artist and a person. With several bootstrap tours and three independent albums under his belt, Anthony is now living in Columbus, Ohio, and is headlining shows around the country.

His breakthrough song, “Whiskey and Wine”, introduced a new sound to his avid fanbase, and shed a light into his evolution as an artist. The hard work and risks didn’t go unnoticed. Early in 2015, the song broke into the Top 10 on coveted iTunes Singer/Songwriter category.

Now, he is squaring his sights on introducing his soulful voice, gutsy lyrics, and melodic tones into a new direction that will push his creative talent like never before. This is just the beginning.

Stop by the store this Friday for the best free wine tasting in Asheville!  We're pouring some fun French wines, and you're going to love them.  Guaranteed!  Just drop by any time between 4-7pm -- we've got plenty of free parking. We're going off the beaten path today -- there will be no Bordeaux, no Burgundy, and no Champagne at this tasting.  Instead, we're digging deeper into some France's lesser known regions and wines.  Ever tried any whites from Gascogne?  They're awesome and they're super-affordable.  How about reds from Isle Saint Pierre, an island in the middle of the Rhone River?  Here's your chance.  Expand your horizons, taste some new wines, stock up on some extreme values, and save big every Friday at Table Wine.  And stop back by tomorrow from 2-5pm as we pour an all-star lineup of new California wines -- trust me, don't miss it! All of the featured tasting wines are being offered at 20% off by the bottle!  To take advantage of the savings, all sales must be tendered by the end of the tasting. 1. 2017 Mont Gravet Cotes de Gascogne Blanc (Gascogne, France) - Gascogny is in the southwestern part of France, near the city of Toulouse.  Long recognized as one of France's top value zones, I think you'll understand after tasting this wine.  100% Colombard fermented in stainless steel, it is reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc with its bright, crisp, and clean personality. Special Tasting Price: $7.99/bottle 2. 2016 Domaine Isle Saint-Pierre Blanc (Rhone Valley, France) – Isle Saint-Pierre is an island in the middle of the Rhone river.  The wines produced here are unique (they don't contain any of the classic Rhone grapes), yet delicious.  This blend of tank-fermented Chardonnay, Muscat, and Sauvignon Blanc is dry and crisp, with floral-scented apple and citrus fruit. Special Tasting Price: $7.99/bottle 3. 2016 Domaine Isle Saint-Pierre Rouge (Rhone Valley, France) - Though it comes from the Southern Rhone valley, it doesn't contain any of the classic Rhone varietals.  Instead, it's a blend of Merlot, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, Carmenere, and Arinarona.  Crazy huh?  The wine, however, is not crazy.  It's delicious, with notes of peppery spice and dark fruit. Special Tasting Price: $7.99/bottle

Please join us in welcoming Patrisse Cullors to Asheville! She will be in conversation with Warren Wilson Professor Rima Vesely-Flad, author of Racial Purity and Dangerous Bodies: Moral Pollution, Black Lives, and the Struggle for Justice. Doors open at 6 and event at 7 pm on Friday, January 19, 2018. The location is the Rainbow Community School event space at 60 State Street in West Asheville. The $10 ticket acts as a coupon toward the purchase of either author's book. Please call the store if you would like to buy the book and the ticket at the same time. From one of the co-founders of Black Lives Matter, the hashtag that turned into a movement and global network, Patrisse Cullors, comes a poetic memoir and reflection on humanity. Necessary and timely, WHEN THEY CALL YOU A TERRORIST: A Black Lives Matter Memoir, co-written with award-winning author and journalist asha bandele, asks us to remember that protest in the interest of the most vulnerable comes from love. Leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement have been called terrorists, a threat to America. But in truth, they are loving women whose life experiences have led them to seek justice for those victimized by the powerful. WHEN THEY CALL YOU A TERRORIST takes an intimate look at Cullors time growing up in Van Nuys, California, surrounded by a devoted family and supportive friends, and weaves her experiences into the larger picture of how predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods are under constant systemic attack. From an unrelenting and hostile police presence, to disproportionate punitive action, to lack of basic social and medical services, Cullors and bandele show how lack of personal security and dignity makes daily life an act of survival. PATRISSE CULLORS is an artist, organizer, and freedom fighter from Los Angeles, CA. Co-founder of Black Lives Matter, she is also a performance artist, Fulbright scholar, popular public speaker, and an NAACP History Maker. In 2016, Patrisse received the Defender of the Dream Award from the AFL-CIO Executive Council Committee on Civil and Human Rights, the Revolution Award for Freedom from ImageNation Cinema Foundation, the Justice Award from National Center for Lesbian Rights, the Community Change Agent Award from BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc., and the Glamour Women of the Year Award for The Justice Seekers. In 2017, Cullors received the Sydney Peace Prize. Rima L. Vesely-Flad is professor and chair of religious studies and director of peace and justice studies at Warren Wilson College. She holds a Ph.D. in social ethics from Union Theological Seminary and was the founder of Interfaith Coalition of Advocates for Reentry and Employment (ICARE) in New York State. At the center of contemporary struggles over-aggressive policing practices is an assumed association, in U.S. culture, of blackness with criminality. In her book, RACIAL PURITY AND DANGEROUS BODIES: Moral Pollution, Black Lives, and the Struggle for Justice, Rima L. Vesely-Flad examines the religious and philosophical constructs of the black body in U.S. society, examining racialized ideas about purity and pollution as they have developed historically and as they are institutionalized today in racially disproportionate policing and mass incarceration.

The comic minds behind The SuperHappy Triva Challenge and The SuperHappy Radio Hour, have partnered with The Magnetic Theatre for an ambitious, 2-day fundraising event. And it WILL be fun! For almost three years, The SuperHappy Trivia Challenge has been keeping audiences in stitches with their monthly, live comedy game show. Its combination of irreverent humor and improvisational leeway, makes it as unpredictable as it is hysterical. In the spring of 2017, they launched their second stage project: The SuperHapy Radio Hour. Also, a monthly offering, this scripted radio-style sketch comedy show is recorded for podcast before a live studio audience, and has brought the best of the best in Asheville stage talent behind their mics. The SuperHappy Telethon will span 8 hours over two nights at Magnetic 375, in the River Arts District, featuring best of and new material from The Radio Hour, segments of The Trivia Challenge, and sketch comedy from the SH team, as well as stand-up comedians, musical acts, and specialty performers. Each night will be broken into two, 2 -hour segments, with ticket price points for a single segment, evening or full weekend pass. No two segments will be the same material/acts. While this show promises to be a comedically skewed send up of famous telethons gone by, they take their fundraising and beneficiary very seriously. Proceeds from the event will go to the not for profit organization, Arms Around ASD (http://armsaroundasd.org), an Asheville based resource center, providing services for people on the Autism spectrum and their families, regardless of age, ability or income. The telethon will not only donate a sizable portion of ticket sales, but will also be donating all proceeds from on-site donations, as well as an online donation portal.

Join us Saturday, January 19th for the Moshaholics Tour featuring Mantis & Lord Swan3x!! 3 Stages / 15 DJs / Doors: 8:00 PM / 18+Featuring: MantisTaylor Scott and Paul Ollinger, known as Mantis, are a relentless duo. Having begun their musical careers with metal & deathcore, the transition to heavy bass music was not so much a step down in intensity, but a slide into a world with spectacular tools to mix dense layers of music in new ways, and deploy it with force. Mantis was formed in early 2011 to test the boundaries of metal-influenced production, and plunge the result into a wash of haunting atmospheres. Mantis wants to provide “music to make you feel like you’re somewhere else, and you’ve never been more stoked to be there.”With that target in sight, 2011 was a smashing first year; the momentum began in Atlanta, and overflowed with releases on labels such as Play Me, Heavy Artillery, BroTown Records, & Abducted Records. A standard was set with 2011's "All Worlds", their first EP, breaking the top 10 on Beatport's Dubstep releases, and held with 2012's "Futures" scoring #5 on Beatport's overall chart. The support of tastemakers such as Liquid Stranger, Downlink, Figure, Cyberoptics, Diesel, Genetix, Persist, & Sluggo, points to an accomplishment of musical influence on an international scale, and the potential for much more.A history in Atlanta's metal scene, playing in acts such as WLTP and Attila, provides Mantis' cornerstone of fierce stage skills. Having become known across the USA for throwing down an aggressive live show with unmatched energy and only the heaviest bass music, Mantis' reputation stands as being one of the gnarliest new production teams in the scene. With packed crowds at hand, and Beatport charts at their feet, only one goal remains- to raise the awareness of metal-influenced bass music... oh, and world domination.'Lord Swan3xFrom an early age Tyler Swan aka Lord Swan3x highly enjoyed heavy music. Throughout high school with metal and now with dubstep, taking all influences all for the ride. If you haven't witnessed the destruction on the dance floor during a set from Lord Swan3x then you have not witnessed true insanity. A wide variety of edm as been crafted by Lord Swan3x but they all have one thing in common. HEAVY BASS MUSIC!KirbyBrightAsheville, NC
