Deadline Approaching to Enter Birdhouse Competion at the Grove Park Inn

ASHEVILLE, NC – Spring is almost here and that means it’s time to get ready for the Eleventh Annual Decorated Birdhouse Competition at The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa. The field of creatively designed birdhouses will be on display at the resort from April 12 to May 10, 2010.

This year, competitors will vie for more than $3,000 in prizes among three major categories: Adult, Teen (ages 13-17) and Youth (ages 12 & under). New to the Decorated Birdhouse Competition this year is a category for functionality. While the contest is primarily for decorative birdhouses, additional bonus prizes will be awarded to the three highest scoring birdhouses, regardless of category, that are deemed functional by the judging panel. Contestants must describe the type of bird for which the house was constructed.

The entries will be judged on craftsmanship, originality, difficulty, theme and overall appearance. The entries must not be larger than 30 inches high, 24 inches wide and 24 inches deep including the base. Entries must be constructed of non-perishable materials. The winners of the Decorated Birdhouse Competition will be announced on Monday, April 12.

Groups such as Girl Scout Troops, charter and home school students, arts groups and church and civic groups are encouraged to enter the competition. Within each category, prizes will be awarded to a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place winner based upon the overall highest scores from the judging categories. In the event of a tie, the Competition Call Judge will make the final decision. Prizes will be awarded as follows:

Adult Category: 1st Place winner will receive $1,000 and a two-night stay at The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa; 2nd Place winner will receive $750 and a one-night stay at The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa; 3rd Place winner will receive $500 and dinner for two at The Blue Ridge Dining Room at The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa.

Teen Category: 1st Place winner will receive $250; 2nd Place winner will receive $150; 3rd Place winner will receive $100.

Youth Category: 1st Place winner will receive $150; 2nd Place winner will receive $75; 3rd Place winner will receive $50.

Functional Category: 1st Place Winner will receive a $200 GPI gift card; 2nd Place Winner will receive a $150 GPI gift card; 3rd Place Winner will receive a $75 GPI gift card

Contestants may mail their birdhouses or deliver them personally to the resort. Mailed entries must be delivered to the resort by no later than Friday, April 9, 2010. Contestants may drop off their entries on the lobby level of the Vanderbilt Atrium on either Friday, April 9, 2010, between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., or on Saturday, April 10, 2010, between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. The official judging will take place on Saturday, April 10.

Competitors may elect to donate their birdhouse entry to the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity who will use the artistic masterpieces for future fund-raising efforts.

Another enticing element of this year’s competition for birdhouse builders is the chance to enjoy a stay at the historic Grove Park Inn for a reduced rate. A limited number of rooms will be available for competitors who wish to enjoy birdhouses and springtime at the resort for a great price.

Entry forms must be received by Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Forms should be sent to The Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa, 290 Macon Avenue, Asheville, NC 28804, Attn: Special Events, or faxed to (828) 252-6040, Attn: Special Events.
