ASHEVILLE, NC – The UNC Asheville baseball team is back in action this weekend when the Bulldogs host Big South Conference foe Liberty at Greenwood Field. The three-game series begins Friday at 3 p.m., followed by a game on Saturday at 2 p.m. and the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Asheville (5-14, 0-3 BSC) ended an eight-game losing streak with a thrilling 5-4 victory over North Carolina Central on Wednesday. Freshman second baseman Robert McIntosh delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally the Bulldogs to the win.
Asheville will have a stiff challenge against the Flames. Liberty (13-6) opens league play this weekend against the Bulldogs and boasts an excellent pitching staff.
“We’re going to face some good pitching this weekend,” declared Asheville coach Tom Smith. “They have guys who can really pitch. Liberty is one of the top teams in the Big South and posted some great non-conference wins. We’ll need to be ready to play and compete from the start on Friday.”
The freshmen duo of Ian Graham and McIntosh continue to lead Asheville in hitting. Graham has an eight-game hitting streak entering this weekend and has a .377 average. McIntosh is hitting at .339. Junior outfielder Danny Baatz leads the Bulldogs in home runs with three and RBI with 14.
