ASHEVILLE, NC – The City of Asheville Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department invites all area artists to submit artwork for SmART Space – the City’s first artist-in-residency program.
The juried competition, which will award a $1,500 honorarium to a selected artist or artist team, is designed to provide short-term access to vacant storefront space for visual, performing, and new media artists or artist teams for the creation and presentation of new works.
The application deadline is 5 p.m. Oct. 19. Application instructions and more information are available on the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts website at www.ashevillenc.gov/parks .
Use of the 1,500 square foot space at 190 Broadway is for a 90-day period, expected to conclude with a final product of a performance or exhibit in the space.
The selected artist(s) will be required to provide 5 to 10 hours per week of public access to the space and interaction with the public to explain their project and their process. The final product must be accessible to the public at no charge.
This call is open to emerging and established artists and artist teams age 18 years and older who currently live in Buncombe, Yancey, McDowell, Rutherford, Polk, Henderson, Madison, Haywood, Transylvania, Jackson, Swain, Macon, Graham, Clay, and Cherokee counties. Proof of residency will be required.
Two artist Q&A forums will be held at the space located at 190 Broadway from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 10 and from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 11.
Interested artists will have the chance to take photos and measurements of the space, as well as pose questions to Diane Ruggiero, superintendent of Cultural Arts.
