Chimney Rock Events

ASHEVILLE NC – It won’t be long until summer reaches its official end, but we’re not letting that slow us down at Chimney Rock. Find out fascinating facts about wild mushrooms, learn about the animals that inhabit Western NC and sign up to run or bike up the road to Chimney Rock all while seeing incredible views you won’t find anywhere else. Keep reading for all the details on these and other amazing happenings at the Rock this month!

Wild Mushroom Walks

Join “mushroom maniac” Karen Johnson, a member of the Chimney Rock State Park team and the Asheville Mushroom Club, on Friday, August 14 or Friday, August 28 from 11am-12pm to learn about the variety of fascinating fungi growing in our area during our Wild Mushroom Walks. The walks are included with Park admission, but space is limited, so get here early! Meet at Grady’s Animal Discovery Den.

Grady’s Friends: Camp Out at Chimney Rock!

Don’t miss the chance to camp beneath the stars in Chimney Rock during the Take a Child Outside Family Campout on Saturday, September 26! Just $8 per person in addition to Park admission; call today to register for this unique opportunity to enjoy the Park at night! Special family activities will be offered throughout the day, including Writers on the Rock for Kids, where local authors Janie DeVos and Marci Spencer will present interactive programs. Daytime activities are included with Park admission.

Meet live animal ambassadors daily at 2pm through August 31 during our Family Discovery Programs, where you can meet our animal ambassadors. Join us at Grady’s Animal Discovery Den for these informative programs, which are included with Park admission.

Naturalist Niche: Wild Edibles

Can you eat that? Learn what local plants you could turn into a tasty dish at our Naturalist Niche: Wild Edibles hike on Sat, Aug. 22, 9:30am-12:30pm. Cost includes Park admission: $22 adults, $7 Annual Passholder, $12 Youth ages 5-15; $5 Grady’s Kids Club Member. Call 828-625-9611 *810 to pre-register for this informative hike today. Registration closes Wed, Aug. 19.

Health & Wellness Fair: September 11, 10am-2pm at the Lake Lure Community Hall. Free to the public! Offering services such as cholesterol and glucose screening, Affordable Health Care Act information, reflexology, carbon monoxide prevention and more.

7th Annual Flock to the Rock: September 19. See live birds, including an amazing Birds in Flight show!

Around the Gorge: Lake Lure Olympiad and Music Thursdays

Are you up for the challenge? The 11th Annual Lake Lure Olympiad and the 9th Annual Race to the Rock happens August 14-16. Compete in up to four races in three days, including a 10 K Dam Run, the Lake Lure Triathlon and Race to the Rock — the ONLY time you can run or bike up to Chimney Rock. This family-friendly event also offers plenty of activities for kids. Find out more and register for racing events online at lakelureolympiad.com.

Music Thursdays continues at The Gathering Place on August 27 from 6-8pm with the West End String Band. Music, food and fun for the whole family!
