MAY EVENTS

Spring Photography Contest: 100 Years of Memories

Date/Time: April 1- May 31

Description: This year, NC State Parks is celebrating its centennial. Chimney Rock, privately owned for over 100 years, was acquired by the state of NC in 2007 and is a proud youngster in the state parks system. Many memories have been made at the Park, and we invite you to share images of your own in our “100 Years of Memories” photo contest. Upload up three photos to our Facebook page using the #100Memories hashtag or email them to us at [email protected] from April 1-May 31 for the chance to win one of three amazing prizes, including free tickets to Chimney Rock, an overnight stay at the Esmeralda Inn and more! Date/Time: Saturday May 7; gate opens 5am for 6:30am sunrise
Description: Few sights in Western North Carolina are as spectacular as watching the sun rise over Lake Lure. Weather permitting, the Park opens early for Annual Passholders with a tasty continental breakfast and the best seats in the area. Reservations are required; please call 800-277-9611. Call us today to sign up for an annual pass and enjoy unlimited visits to the Park for 12 months, plus discounts with area merchants and attractions. Please note that due to the elevator being out of service, the breakfast will be held in the area in front of Cliff Dwellers Gifts. Naturalist Niche: Treemendous
Date/Time: Saturday, May 7; 9:30–11:30am
Description: Explore a special area of Chimney Rock State Park’s old growth forest, otherwise inaccessible to the public, with canopy members over a century old, some likely 200 to 300 years of age. Improve your tree identification skills and see our largest known Chestnut Oak in the park on this moderate off the beaten path hike with a naturalist. Dress appropriately for the weather, wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water. Space is limited to 15, and advance registration is required, so call 800-277-9611 today to reserve your spot! Treemendous is part of our Naturalist Niche series. Join an expert naturalist on park trails once a month March – December to learn about birding, old growth trees, ancient geology and other fascinating outdoor topics.

Cost: Includes Park admission: $22 Adult, $7 Annual Passholder, $12 Youth (ages 5-15), $5 Grady’s Kids Club Member. Advance registration required.

 

Mother’s Day Weekend Special

Date/Time: Saturday-Sunday, May 7-8

Description: Moms work hard for their families. Return the love by treating her to a beautiful day at Chimney Rock enjoying spring wildflowers and stunning views. Buy one regularly-priced adult ticket and mom or grandma receives one free with online coupon. Spring Boy Scout Day & Campout

Description: For years, Boy Scouts of all ages have enjoyed their own special days at Chimney Rock State Park. Our nearly 1,000 acres make an incredible backdrop to a variety of programs that are educational and fun! Scouts will enjoy morning programs and have the chance to become a North Carolina State Parks Junior Ranger. And the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down—our 5-acre Meadows is the perfect place to spend a night under the stars. Programs details at http://chimneyrockpark.com/education.

Homeschool DaySpring Homeschool Day
Date/Time: Wednesday, May 18; 9:30am-12:30pm
Description: Have a field day at Chimney Rock! Join our education specialists for fun, interactive programs in a 1000-acre classroom where learning comes alive. All programs are designed to meet NC and SC curriculum standards. Optional afternoon activities will be offered. Registration required; call (828) 625-9611. Writers on the Rock
Date/Time: Sunday, May 22; 1-4pm
Description: Our region offers some of the best outdoor opportunities in the world, from hikes up steep paths to see jaw-dropping views to meandering walks down footpaths that end at stunning waterfalls, challenging climbs on ancient rocks to observing the flora and fauna unique to Appalachia. On May 22, you can visit with and learn from a team of outdoor experts as you view the soaring cliffs and stunning valleys of Chimney Rock and the Hickory Nut Gorge. Join authors Tim Barnwell, Danny Bernstein, Karen Chavez, Stephanie Jeffries, Ryan Lubbers, Jim Proctor, Marci Spencer, Timothy Spira and Neil Regan as they share their expertise and autograph copies of their books. A selection of titles by each author will be available for sale at the event through The Fountainhead Bookstore. Visit chimneyrockpark.com for a complete list of authors.

Memorial Day Weekend Family Fun
Date/Time
: Saturday-Monday, May 28-30; 11am-4pm
Description: Meet some of Grady the Groundhog’s woodland friends or possibly our birds of prey, a Red-tailed hawk and Great Horned Owl, at our daily 2pm Family Animal Encounters, Saturday-Monday! A Park naturalist will explain each animal’s role in our ecosystem, how they came to live at the park and lessons on what we can do to help protect wildlife. Then, grab a Track Trail brochure at Grady’s Den and take a hike along our Great Woodland Adventure trail with 12 interactive education stations. Round out your day of family fun with one free climb per person on our Climbing Tower, open 11am-4pm Saturday & Sunday.

JUNE EVENTS

A Park naturalist will explain each animal’s role in our ecosystem, how they came to live at the park and lessons on what we can do to help protect wildlife. Afterward, grab a Track Trail brochure at Grady’s Den and take a hike along our Great Woodland Adventure trail with 12 interactive education stations!

National Trails Day
Date/Time: Saturday, June 4; 11am-3pm. Program and hike times vary
Description: What better way to celebrate National Trails Day than to take a hike! Join a Park naturalist on adventurous guided hikes throughout the day. Check our website, chimneyrockpark.com, for specific trails and times.

National Get Outdoors Day
Date/Time: Saturday, June 11; 11am-3pm. Program and hike times vary
Description: Bring your family and friends and join us for a day of outdoor-themed activities, which could include live animals and programs on how to enjoy the great outdoors responsibly. Then pack a picnic and enjoy a special viewing of The Last of the Mohicans that evening. It’s a full day of outdoor fun! Daytime activities and times will vary; check back closer to the event for more details. See Movie on the Meadows listing for movie times and details.

: Saturday, June 11; Gate opens at 7:30pm, Movie begins at 9pm
Description: Celebrate National Get Outdoors Day with a day of family-friendly outdoor activities, then join us for America’s favorite pastime to watch The Last of the Mohicans on a giant outdoor movie screen surrounded by the beauty of the mountains and under a canopy of stars. Presented by Ingles Markets. Don’t forget to pack a blanket or camping chair and a flashlight.

Cost: $10/car, $8/car for Annual Passholders or included with June 11 Park admission receipt. Save $3 on parking with special coupon available only at Lake Lure Ingles with your Advantage Card.  

 

Naturalist Niche: Summer Birding
Date/Time: Saturday, June 18; 8:30-10:30am
Description: During the summer, dozens of species of warblers breed in Chimney Rock. A Park naturalist will lead a moderate hike to see and hear our summertime feathered friends, including Worm-eating, Swainson’s, Black-and-white, Hooded and Yellow-throated Warblers. The summer-resident Scarlet Tanagers and Wood Thrushes will likely be singing and establishing their territories. Dress appropriately for the weather, wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water. Space is limited to 15, and advance registration is required, so call 800-277-9611 today to reserve your spot. Summer Birding is part of our Naturalist Niche series. National Pollinator Week

Date/Time: June 20 – June 26; daily 2pm programs

Description: We all know honeybees are pollinators, but how about bats? And did you know that birds are attracted to pollinate red flowers more than other kinds of colors? Take a walk through our pollinator garden at Grady’s Animal Discovery Den to learn why pollinators are so important to our world and what we can do to protect them.
