Lake Julian Festival of Lights

ASHEVILLE NC – Lake Julian Park presents “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” at Lake Julian Park. The first night of the Lake Julian Come on out &d see the lights!Festival of Lights is for walkers only.

Thursday, December 4, Lake Julian Park will become a wonderland for pedestrians – no cars allowed! Enjoy the holiday lights from a new perspective as you stroll through the brightly lit woods.

Take time to warm yourself by the fire and toast a couple of marshmallows with the kids.

Gates open from 6 – 8 p.m. Adults admission is $5 and children get in FREE!

Wonderland Walkers should wear comfortable shoes, warm clothing and be prepared to walk over half a mile on a paved walkway. The walkway is of moderate difficulty with some inclines. Parents with young children are welcome to bring strollers or wagons. No pets please.

Light up your Holiday nights at the Lake Julian Park Festival of Lights. This is the 15th year for the annual spectacle. The drive through show begins on Friday, December 5 and is nightly from 6 – 9 p.m. through Tuesday, December 23. The park is brightly lit with thousands of colored lights and over 50 animated and stationary light displays. The road circling the park becomes a magical journey through tunnels of dazzling lights.

The cost for this drive through presentation is $5 for a car, $10 for a van and $25 for a motor coach. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Buncombe County Special Olympics. Lake Julian Park is located off Long Shoals Road.

Kids Fishing Tournament at Lake Julian

Kids Fishing TournamentASHEVILLE NC – The Kids Fishing Tournament at Lake Julian Park is Saturday, September 27, 2014. It’s open to children ages 15 and under and is sponsored by The Recreation Division of Buncombe County Library, Recreation and Culture Department and West Ridge Auto Sales.

The Tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. and runs to 11:30 a.m. Register on site the day of the tournament for $10 per child, which covers fishing bait, snacks and a free hot dog lunch at the conclusion of the tournament. A fishing license is not required for children under 16 years of age.

This is a catch and release event and we will supply a bucket for each competitor’s catch. After the fish has been weighed and measured, it is released back into the lake. Participants should bring their own pole.

Fishing is allowed anyplace inside the Lake Julian Park boundaries. No boat fishing is allowed. Children must be accompanied by at least one adult.

Children will be grouped into one of five age categories and prizes will be awarded in each of the categories.

Prizes will be given for:

  • biggest fish
  • smallest fish
  • most fish caught

In addition, competitors in every age group will have an opportunity to show off their casting skill. Casting poles and targets are provided by Lake Julian Park and children can demonstrate their ability anytime during the Tournament. There are prizes for the winners of the casting competition, too!

It’s a Good Time to Fish at Lake Julian!

ASHEVILLE NC – Since Lake Julian is a thermal lake (it serves as a cooling agent for Progress Energy) some of the best fishing occurs from October through March.

Lake Julian has an abundance of bass, catfish, brim, crappie and Tilapia.

Can You Make a Scarecrow? You Could Win!

ASHEVILLE, NC – Do you have it in you to create the perfect crow-scaring creature? Use your creativity to make an original scarecrow creation to enter in the Scarecrow Festival contest. Competition is fierce, but fun – and you could win a prize!

The Scarecrow Festival at Lake Julian Park is on October 1 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. The highlight of the Festival is the judging of the handmade Scarecrows. It’s free to enter! Remember to Come to the Scarecrow Festival on October 2!send your registration form in early or make sure to register at Lake Julian by 8:30 a.m. the day of the show.

Entrants are divided into two divisions:

  • individuals
  • families/groups

Prizes are:

  • $100 for 1st Place (in each division)
  • 2nd & 3rd Place (in each division) prizes donated by Chick-fil-A & Fun Depot
  • $500 for the Best of Show entry

Winning scarecrows are chosen by popular vote. Scarecrows must remain up until 4 p.m. – winners are announced and prizes awarded at the end of the day. (You must be present to win.)

Get your lunch at the Special Olympics food booth, which will be selling hamburgers and hot dogs. 100% of the proceeds will go to support Buncombe County Special Olympics Athletes.

Kid’s Fishing Tournament – Sept. 24

ASHEVILLE, NC – The Kid’s Fishing Tournament at Lake Julian Park will take place on Saturday, September 24, 2011. The event is open to all children ages 15 and under and is sponsored by Buncombe County Parks, Greenways and Recreation Services.

The Kid’s Fishing Tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. and is over promptly at 11:30 a.m. Preregistration for the Tournament is advised or children can register the day of the Tournament starting at 8:00 a.m. at Lake Julian Park. The cost for the Tournament is $5 per child. No fishing license is required for children under 16 years of age.

This is a Catch and Release event. Lake Julian Park will supply a bucket for each competitor’s catch. After the fish has been weighed and measured, it will be released back into the lake. Participants bring their own pole and bait. Any type of pole and bait is permitted.
